Eagerly awaiting a report. ... 5) The Pee Wee Russell album - The spirit of '76 (Impulse) is lovely. I have never heard him play before, having always associated his clarinet playing with Dixieland Jazz which I'm not keen on. However his playing with the big band is absolutely stunning and has meant that I will be investigating other recordings of his. ... Thanks for posting some impressions - I will not get this right now, but it sounds good enough to be added to the list... As for Pee Wee, continue here (and get it before it's too late!): Fantastic quartet album with Laurence Brown (plus a bass/drums team, no piano), and among others, they do some Monk songs! Quote

jazzbo Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 That Pee Wee Impulse has MARSHALL not Lawrence Brown. It's good but my favorite Pee Wee is earlier Pee Wee, especially in Condonite settings. What a musical mind! My favorite clarinetist. (I guess people have an aversion to Chicago style, "dixieland" etc. but I love that stuff when done right). Quote

Free For All Posted April 16, 2006 Report Posted April 16, 2006 Currently: JJJ, disks 6 & 7 "Tromboned out" yet BF? Yeah..........just about (not that there's anything wrong with it). Have to cool it for a while. Hey, even I had to pace myself a bit with that one. It's a lot of music to digest in a marathon listening session. Actually, I rarely listen to an entire Mosaic box straight through when I first get it (especially the bigger ones). I tend to burn out and need a little variety, or at least a break. I like to work at it a bit more gradually, smaller bites you know. You guys that listen straight through have more stamina than I do! Rest up for those sessions w/Freddie and Clifford Jordan! They're worth your full attention! Quote
