Regarding if the Waller material is good or not, I'm curious ... I've got the JSP sets around but haven't dug into them too deeply yet, and when playing the Waller from the previously available DLs, I found it just right, though certainly not among the highlights (how about Hawkins's "Body and Soul"!?!) I've listened through disc 2 and the John Kirby cuts are a revelation, the best so far (for me anyway). Quote

mikeweil Posted July 19, 2018 Report Posted July 19, 2018 I enjoy this set, but frankly, can understand that the first session in the set was not released at the time. Some of Tommy Turrentine's and Horace Parlan's playing on Comin' Your Way sounds a bit strange, harmonically, to my ears. Jubilee Shout is great (had the Blue Note twofer LP for a while and liked it back then); Another Story is nice but not overwhelming. Wanted to have that for Thad Jones. Looking forward to the rest. sidewinder Posted July 19, 2018 Report Posted July 19, 2018 ‘Another Story’ is a real favourite of mine - very nice sounding album. Quote

Bluesnik Posted August 27, 2018 Report Posted August 27, 2018 (edited) I love to hear Hall behind Brookmeyer or the other way round (even with Brookmeyer on piano). And The street swingers is the pick in the lot included here. At least to me. Edited August 27, 2018 by Bluesnik Quote
Stereojack Posted August 27, 2018 Report Posted August 27, 2018 I had all the LP's back in the day, but it's nice to become reacquainted with this music. Quote
Brad Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 Disc 4. Not too big on the Glenn Miller selections. Only three, fortunately. Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 20, 2018 Report Posted September 20, 2018 The Jimmy Giuffre 3, from the Capitol/Atlantic box, programmed in the original track order. Just gorgeous. Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 20, 2018 Report Posted September 20, 2018 The Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet, also from the Mosaic big box, and also programmed in the original track order, which is the only way this album makes sense. Quote

Nice one Jeff. The JImmy Giuffre Clarinet was one of my first buys back in the day. Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 (edited) Two very different albums from the Larry Young Blue Note box: Contrasts and Grant Green's I Want to Hold Your Hand. Edited September 21, 2018 by jeffcrom Quote

I haven’t given it much thought but I wonder how many jazz versions there are of Beatie songs (having recently listened to Organissimo’s album). Quote
