king ubu Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Ayler - Holy Ghost The final discs with the Saint-Vence material and the fascinating interviews... and the airport tape - wonder what had happened there? anyone knows? And what about that "Ed Sullivan" gig they act like it was scheduled to take place the next day?And wtf is Mr. Heidecker? Heineken? The Complete Count Basie Vol. 1-10 1936-1941 - LP1 Wow, never seen this one. Gonna have to keep a look out for it. There's a second one that seems to pop up even less often... between the two of them you get what Sony failed to bring forth again in 2004 for the Basie centennial. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Allen Lowe's "That Devellin' Tune" Box 2 of 4, CD 9 of 9 Good early stuff ! Quote
king ubu Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Made my way through Sarah Vaughan's Mercury recordings lately... right now into disc 3 of the final box. Great stuff! I love the poppy things, too - her voice is just... well, divine ;-) Quote
JohnS Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 Not had Bill Evans out for a while so it's The Complete Bill Evans on Verve. Disc 11 (Village Vanguard with Eddie Gomez and Philly Joe). Next up discs 12-14. Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 From Spirituals to Swing (Vanguard), disc one. Mitchell's Christian Singers, who have about seven and a half minutes of music here, are one of my favorite gospel groups of all time. And that's based on only hearing these tracks and six more minutes - I have one worn 78 by them, on the Perfect label. Quote

king ubu Posted January 21, 2012 Report Posted January 21, 2012 just finished the wonderful "Native Dancer" (had never heard it before!) and now started "Atlantis"... rather a shock, soundwise... but I guess I'll stick with it and spin the rest (skipping the WR compilation discs) Quote

jeffcrom Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) Cecil Taylor in Berlin '88 (FMP) - Remembrance, CT & Louis Moholo This is one of my favorite box sets, bought for 200 bucks in 1989, when it was issued. That was a huge sum for me at the time. It goes without saying that it was worth it. Later: What a beautiful performance. You'd think a Taylor/Moholo duet would be unrelentingly aggressive, but there's so much variety of dynamics and texture here. Edited February 13, 2012 by jeffcrom Quote
JohnS Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) Murray's Steps Probably my favourite of the Soul Note/Black Saint Octets. Edited February 13, 2012 by JohnS Quote
king ubu Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Two discs in (I wonder why the earliest album is grouped as #2?), it sounds like my ears will need several listens to get attuned to this... synths, electric bass, lots of flute... not that anything about it is bad, not at all, but the overall sound isn't what I usually prefer. Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 Cecil Taylor in Berlin '88 (FMP) Tonight, The Hearth, with Evan Parker and Tristan Honsinger. This is one of the relatively few recordings on which Taylor doesn't completely dominate. Quote
colinmce Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 If it takes me 30 years and I have to sell off a chunk of my collection to afford it, I will have that one day. Quote
