bertrand Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 I was browsing the Newbury comics site looking for some of the cheap Fantasy titles they have (a random selection of titles uncorrelated with the recent oldies blowout). The ones below caught my eye. Are there any in this batch I should avoid? Thanks, Bertrand. Sonny Criss: The Beat Goes On Sonny Criss: Up, Up And Away Shirley Scott: Blue Seven Jimmy Forrest: Most Much Gene Ammons: Late Hour Special Quote
brownie Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Grab the Sonny Criss and Gene Ammons CDs... The Shirley Scott and Jimmy Forest are good ones too.. Quote
king ubu Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Yes, I have all but the Scott... the Ammons is fine! Those Forrest OJCs are all fine! The Criss ones aren't the ones I'd get first, but if you have the others, go get those as well! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Took me a long time to get round to the Scott, but when I got it, a bit over a year ago, I found it was one of her best. Noslen is very nice on it. MG Quote
jazzbo Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 You'll need a really good bomb shelter. Quote
Brad Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Up, Up and Away is not a dud but not one of my favorites either. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Not a Shirley Scott nut but the others are definitely keepers. Criss and Forrest get my tops in that bunch. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 This is actually an atypical Shirley Scott, with Nelson and Newman as a front line. Very good! (I'm a Scott fan though, I like most of her releases a lot). Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 (edited) get anything by Sonny Criss - and that's an order - did you hear me? What are you waiting for? Edited December 10, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote

The Criss ones aren't the ones I'd get first, but if you have the others, go get those as well! The only Criss I have so far are This Is Criss which is very good and Sonny 's Dream which is a masterpiece. What are the ones you would get next? I'll still get the two listed above since they are cheap. How is his Jazz In Paris date? Bertrand. Edited December 11, 2009 by bertrand Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 uk proper records cd, early sonny- or is it early criss, or early sonny criss, or whatever the hell. you need this cd STAT. you get the complete sonny w/ bird n chet in inglewood session, plus other early classics including cuts w/ Hampton Hawes. YOU NEED THIS CD. you also need to hear sonnys major label late period studio work. there an album u can probably google "warm & sonny" which kind of has a cult following- its a full turn from the bebop sonny of his youth but its beyond beautiful, and has lee ritenour on it Quote

Well, definitely these two, plus Portrait of Sonny Criss - not sure what next, most of his albums are mighty fine! Don't forget the Prevue, and the three early albums for Imperial (collected on a 2CD Connoisseur set)! The Jazz in Paris is not one of the best, I'd say, but still worth getting if you see it cheap. I guess Criss is someone I'd want to have as much of as I can find... there are two Muse albums that were reissued on 32Jazz, those are in the same category as the Jazz in Paris disc, I think. The Proper chewy mentions is this here, I guess: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fnfqxqualdfe Quote

Sonny Criss is one of those guys you get very addicted to. But his records are likely to be easy to get for some time - even "Warm & Sonny" which Chewy and I LURVE - but many don't like at all. Just make up your mind to get everything, and you don't have to make difficult choices Oh, and you'll get a lot of very nice music, too. MG Quote
brownie Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 Bertrand, this double CD (on the Blue Note label by now!) has some of the best Criss ever The Complete Imperial Sessions. Accompanying players include Kenny Drew, Sonny Clark, Berney Kessel, Lawrence Marable among others. Quote
Brad Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 Wholeheartedly second Brownie's recommendation. That is some amazing playing. I'm going to pull that out today. Quote
bertrand Posted December 11, 2009 Author Report Posted December 11, 2009 Isn't this one out of print? Bertrand. Quote
John L Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 get anything by Sonny Criss - and that's an order - I've been following that wise order for many years now. I came to regret it a bit yesterday, however. I bought a new Criss CD entitiled "Blues in My Heart, which looked like some 70s small group Criss that I had never heard before. It turned out to be a disguised reissue of Crisscraft and Out of Nowhere. On the other hand, for those who don't yet have those two sparkling albums, it is a very nice boot. Quote
Brad Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 Isn't this one out of print? Bertrand. I believe so Quote
Spontooneous Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 I'll repeat the Shirley Scott Blue Seven recommendation, because Joe Newman plays his very best in this unexpected context. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 My favorite Sonny Criss recording is SATURDAY MORNING. This is a quartet date with Barry Harris on piano. It is probably hard to find, but if you can locate a copy be sure to grab it. Quote
Royal Oak Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 (edited) Another recommendation for "Portrait Of Sonny Criss" here. I agree with MG that it's easy to get addicted to Criss - I got hooked very quickly once I first heard him. I really despise the over-use of the word/concept "passion" (you hear it everywhere, usually as a substitute for talent/competence or just for the lack of anything else to say), but Sonny Criss always sounds SERIOUSLY impassioned to me. porcy62 Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Isn't this one out of print? Bertrand. I believe so Yes, though one could buy all the individual LP of Classic Records (if you can stomach the $$). Quote
