ghost of miles Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 Some discussion of this on the Coltrane listserv--much like the Mingus Birdland 1962 set a couple years back, an RLR release of material that's circulated widely on the Internet in recent times. Quote
mikeweil Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 Indeed - if the sound is acceptable, this might be a nice companion to the Village Vanguard recordings. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 The presence of Don Garrett is intriguing. Quote

J.A.W. Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) Linking to unauthorized recordings is against forum rules. Sorry if I violated any rules - is linking the cover pic a violation, too? There was a link to Amazon in the first post that Larry removed. Edited September 2, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
felser Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 Related question - has anyone heard the Coltrane 1961 Newport CD? How is sound/performance on that? Quote
David Ayers Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 Related question - has anyone heard the Coltrane 1961 Newport CD? How is sound/performance on that? It's on Spotify. Sound not good. Only Impressions/Naima/MFT are from Newport, other tracks are with Dolphy, I can't place them. Performance-wise, you've heard it all before, I should think, played better maybe and certainly in better sound.Sound of other concert with Dolphy is horrible.I *think* the material with Dolphy is from Helsinki. Matthew Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) According to a previous discussion, the tapes for Chicago were at the wrong speed, has that been corrected? Edited September 2, 2012 by Matthew Quote
brownie Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 I'll get the set even if the sound or speed are not quite right. No way I'll ignore Coltrane music from 1961! Quote
JSngry Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 There was a link to Amazon in the first post that Larry removed. Was that a link to U.S Amazon? Because if it was, the product is no longer listed there. Quote
JSngry Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Ah, that would confirm my findings, then. Quote
king ubu Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 According to a previous discussion, the tapes for Chicago were at the wrong speed, has that been corrected? I'd expect not, but I won't buy it ... one thing that annoys da sh*it out of me is that those bootleggers fancy a "grab and run" policy, never return to get facts straight and wait for updates that often (at least in the case of Trane or Slime) do turn up within some weeks on dime. They're only in it for the money, but that's why they're bootleggers, I guess ... but then who knows, they might prove me wrong some day. So far it seems they consistently seek for the worst versions to throw out on the market (for the discriminating collector, dig?) Quote
jazzbo Posted September 20, 2012 Report Posted September 20, 2012 (edited) I don't have anything to compare the speed issue to, but I've heard the first disc of this set and the sound is not really bad. Just bad. If you are used to listening to bootlegs, this one sounds like a decent bootleg from the 'fifties, a so so one from the 'sixties, if that makes sense. Speed seems possibly a bit slow to me in a few spots, but again, I've not heard the material before. Edited September 20, 2012 by jazzbo Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 21, 2012 Report Posted September 21, 2012 Grabbed this from Dime because I don't want to pay for "new" bootlegged CDs, and wanted to be sure I had the pitch-corrected version. Sure, the sound is pretty grimy, but the music is superb. Quote
jeffsjazz Posted September 22, 2012 Report Posted September 22, 2012 My experience with "RLR" has been universally bad, often frightenly horrific sound-NEVER AGAIN ! RLR should stand for "Really Lousy Recording". Audiofiles STAY AWAY ! Quote
