John Law Quartet - Exploded On Impact (Slam, 1992)

R-2540165-1289547485.jpeg.jpg

Just finished this one:

Together Alone by Joseph Jarman and Anthony Braxton (Delmark, 1972)

R-370964-1396706256-5820.jpeg.jpg

There are a lot of fun ideas on this one. It seems surprisingly ahead of itself for 1972 - closer in ideas terms at times to latter day AACM and adjacent artists likes Nicole Mitchell and Matana Roberts.

Thanks to @mjazzg, who I think first mentioned it (probably about a year ago!).

Glad to be of service (maybe). Sounds good! I should listen to it...

Ravi Coltrane and Sonny Fortune on the horns. The 32+ minute version of Doll of the Bride is fantastic.

In my one live experience with the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine many years ago (around 1984), they played Doll of the Bride to close a set. It was utterly fantastic.

As a young guy shopping inside the Jazz Record Mart, a woman and a man walked into the store
with a large envelope kind of package. I was standing at the counter as the artwork was trying to be
released from the envelope and the woman kinda lost her grip on it and it almost went to the floor.
I was there to catch it and they both thanked me. I don't know who the woman was, but the man
was Braxton and the artwork was for that Together Alone album. It was my first time talking to him.

Shame they didn't keep the same art for the cd release.

Just looked that up, some interesting names involved

Recommended -  cheap as chips, swings like crazy and Simon Spillett’s usual excellent essay.

Just noticed that the arrangements are by saxophonist Tony Roberts of the Dankworth Orchestra, Ray Russell Group etc. He is still musically active in the West Dorset area and thereabouts.

Noted, and purchased.  Best band name ever...

In fact, everything on this relaunched Turtle Records imprint is worth getting hold of. Not a dud amongst them. The Joy Marshall release with Gordon Beck’s Quartet (inc. McLaughlin) is a particular gem.

Stop it! :)

Edit to add: the Gibbs/Burton looks very tempting

Sorry !   Glad it’s not my bank account.

The Gibbs/Burton is indeed interesting - a bit lo fi would be the only negative I would give it.

My favourite Mingus! :tup

I almost invariably reach for Tijuana Moods (largely the same group with Bill Triglia instead of Bill Evans), but I think that this is my new go-to Mingus record.

Black Saint & Sinner Lady for me, but there's so many great ones over a quarter century.
