Here's a group I just recently discovered.  According to the comments on YouTube, the featured drummer, Viola Smith, was still alive at age 106 last year.

A few of these folks I was unfamiliar with previously. Not a bad article at all.

Of course, in the more modern era, we shouldn't leave out Barbara Donald, Monnette Sudler, Jill McManus, Linda Sharrock, Irène Schweizer, Jane Robertson, Claire Daly -- and younger contemporary artists like Shayna Dulberger, Amanda Monaco, Mette Rasmussen, Louise D.E. Jensen... maybe a NYT mention would help get the latter group more gigs.

I mean, the situation for women in jazz is so much better today than it used to be in terms of visibility... the challenge, as ever, is getting paid to do the work, and of course sexism is still a huge factor in terms of how an environment geared towards male behavior is really going to encourage equality.

Jane Getz - she played in Pony Poindexter's quartet immediately before he left for Europe. In his memoirs, he said "she played her ass off". But besides a Mingus LP there is nothing, it seems.

She was gigging at The Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach as late as the late 90s. Not sure about recordings though.

... which accientally featured drummer Marvin Paitillo who also was in Poindexter's quartet. So that was their next gig after Pony took a ride to Europe.

She also played on George Braith's "Musart" LP on Prestige. The Lord disco now also lists several sessions made in California from 1995 to 2017, even one CD of her own leadership, but all for private musician-run labels, it seems.
