sgcim Posted December 2, 2020 Report Posted December 2, 2020 I don't know if this has been posted before, but I never knew that Getz tried to make "Sweet Rain" with Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes, but it had to be canned, because Getz was all messed up again... He blamed it on Roy Haynes(!), whom Creed Taylor fired, and Swallow quit, so Creed Taylor hired Ron Carter and Grady Tate: This comes up at 51 minutes and change into the interview: Quote

Daniel A Posted December 3, 2020 Report Posted December 3, 2020 One track ("Windows") from the first session was included on a Chick Corea compilation album. It is very good. There seemed to have been plans to include more material from the initial session on an expanded CD reissue of 'Sweet Rain' at some point, but reportedly it was blocked by the Getz estate. There is thread on that somewhere on this forum. Quote

Joe Posted December 3, 2020 Report Posted December 3, 2020 Thanks for posting; great conversations in this video. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 3, 2020 Report Posted December 3, 2020 Because of this thread, I am playing "Sweet Rain" again. Such a lovely record. Getz and Corea playing beautifully. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted December 3, 2020 Report Posted December 3, 2020 Steve Swallow seems like a really nice guy. Never seen him play, alas. Quote

functusian Posted yesterday at 02:53 AM Report Posted yesterday at 02:53 AM I'm so glad this is here, as NYU pulled this video from YouTube and is now unlisted. We can still access it because of the above link! Quote
mikeweil Posted 21 hours ago Report Posted 21 hours ago The Getz estate wants to protect the image of Getz as a supreme jazz artist, ignoring his dark sides. Blaming another musician, and a great one as Roy Haynes, on the failure of a session, is unbearable, IMO. Quote
gmonahan Posted 14 hours ago Report Posted 14 hours ago Getz was one of those deeply flawed human beings who played great music. Like Kevin in the original thread, seeing this has caused me to get out "Sweet Rain" and play it again. It is a very fine record. Quote
mikeweil Posted 9 hours ago Report Posted 9 hours ago Yes, but knowing such things somewhat spoils it for me. Some part of this egomaniac behaviour always remains in the music. Quote

Some part of this egomaniac behaviour always remains in the music. When Larry Kart talked about Getz' "mooing", that's what I always imagined he meant. And the longer I listened to Sweet Rain, the more of it I heard. Captain Marvel. not so much Higher stakes in that one, imo Quote
Pim Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago (edited) What a highly unpleasant person he was. Stellar record though, probably my favorite Getz. The combination with Chick works like magic. Captain Marvel is great as well though it’s not so consistently good as Sweet Rain. Edited 1 hour ago by Pim Quote
