Worthy candidate indeed ....

Turns out this box has all of the Five Spot tracks.

Dolphy.jpg

From memory, the standalone CD of Vol. 1 has a relatively long tuning, club buzz and laughter before the opening Fire Waltz, while the box set track starts abruptly (I only have the box set now). Maybe it's just me, but I like it better when there is club noise for a while and then the performance.

Look above in this thread, this was just offered with membership in the LA Jazz Institute and that opportunity has apparently ended.

Thanks Lon. I had seen that but hoped there might be another way. Oh well, it'll come up for sale some way some day!

I was thinking of posting this one, but figured that someone else would eventually get to it.  👍

IIRC it's not really complete, but rather a collection of what had been previously released as individual albums put into chronological order.  If I do remember correctly I wonder if there is more unreleased material.   ( just looked at the liner notes and they claim that this is "all known" recordings from the date but I doubt that they had access to the Contemporary vaults.)

Nevertheless a great set and I'm just being greedy.

Yeah, I was actually thinking of the 5 separate CDs designated volumes 1-5 and issued by Contemporary/Fanatasy as part of the old OJC series, so technically not a box set.  I never bought that PD box set, since I already had the 5 original Contemporary CDs.

Where do I go to buy this? Discogs lists it as existing but has no copies for sale.

It was a special prepaid "limited edition"  Item for LAJ members announced last year.

Some tracks have appeared on  a vinyl " The Chet Baker tracks" on Cpontemporary. The rest is as far as I see it 'unissued'

I have the original vinyls, up to vol 4. Among the best sounding live recordings in my collection.

Yes, same here. I have early stereo copies and can't think of anything that sounds better than them for live recordings.

Surprisingly all the instruments has a perfect balance and the illusion of being there is overwhelming. Definitely a great recording.

Yes indeed. Contemporary had excellent live recordings. Its a favorite label I have colleted for many years beside Pacific Jazz/World Pacific

As I recall, the first 4 volumes of the CD editions matches the contents of the 4 volumes of the original LPs, and CD volume 5 consists of takes that were not included on the original LPs.  And agreeing with everyone else here, the recording quality is simply stunning.  Close your eyes, and you are back there in the Black Hawk in 1959--like having a time machine.

Each of the first 4 volumes (on cd) has a bonus track.

Most of you have probably already seen this article about and interview of legendary Contemporary engineer Roy DuNann concerning the origins of the Contemporary "sound," but for those who haven't yet seen it:

https://www.stereophile.com/interviews/402roy/index.html

As porcy62 pointed out, the Black Hawk sessions weren't recorded by DuNann--it was Howard Holzer--but this article helps to explain how Contemporary got such phenomenal sound.

Thanks!  I should have taken the time to actually pull them off the shelf to refresh my memory.

AFAIK there were only 100 sets issued

Of the 60 tracks covering the 6CD set only 11 had been previously released (including one from an earlier LAJI CD)

Which makes absolutely no sense for a fundraiser. If you have a fundraiser and find that there is demand for the item, make more and raise more money. Limiting it is just limiting your own ability to raise those funds. Just dumb.

And, as I said, I tried going through the process to join the LAJ just so I could buy this set but during the process, there was no way to get that set, even though it was being advertised as a membership drive "perk".
