JSngry Posted June 9 Report Posted June 9 I remain a fan.Glad that he had one last burst of public awareness. RIP and if there's been anything funkier than this, I've yet to hear it! But this is fun too: Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 9 Report Posted June 9 Damn, too bad. I very much enjoyed the documentary and learned a lot. Quote
JSngry Posted June 10 Report Posted June 10 Those song where Sylvester talked to Sly (and vice-versa) are my favorite. Quote
romualdo Posted June 11 Report Posted June 11 RIP Sly The recent doco is essential viewing IMHO Quote
BFrank Posted June 11 Report Posted June 11 Went to this show, waited a few hours past when he was supposed to hit the stage. Finally went home about midnight. RIP, Sly! Quote

IIRC, also Pat Boone was a Dentonite. I read somewhere that Sly always had his nose in the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration book. That would not surprise me. The guy's songs very often had SOME kinds of twists in there, and sometimes a lot of them. Beautiful. Too beautiful for this world. 1 hour ago, Kevin Bresnahan said: Not a bad cover as covers go... This is a VERY good record. I kid you not and I don't say that lightly. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted Monday at 02:28 PM Report Posted Monday at 02:28 PM I just finished watching "Sly Lives (aka The Burden Of Black Genius) and I left it feeling a bit bummed out to see his decline laid bare like this. It was a bit weird to hear George Clinton chuckle about him & Sly getting hooked on crack cocaine. Really George? You think that was funny? I never knew Sly was a DJ and a record producer before he formed The Family Stone. I guess that's likely because by the time I was getting into his music, all that was in the news by then was all of his drug arrests. To see what he did in a relatively short period of time was quite eye-opening. I did get a chuckle the first time that Mark Anthony Neal's face showed up on the screen. They say everyone has a doppleganger. Neal's would definitely be retired NBA player Paul Pierce. Quote
John L Posted Monday at 05:51 PM Report Posted Monday at 05:51 PM Sly spent some of his initial down time with Bobby Womack who was on a similar drug-induced skid. Bobby came out of it OK, but Sly didn't. Quote
