Face of the Bass Posted yesterday at 03:05 PM Report Posted yesterday at 03:05 PM What sets would you nominate for the best box sets released since, say, 2010. No Mosaic sets please. We have more than enough discussion about them on this board. Thanks! Quote

jazzbo Posted yesterday at 04:18 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:18 PM Here's one that I really never expected to see and am so glad that it was conceived and released: Quote
John L Posted yesterday at 04:38 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:38 PM My #1 would have to be this one that virtually doubled the amount of Julius Hemphill music available with extremely high average quality. Quote
Stonewall15 Posted yesterday at 04:40 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:40 PM Los Angeles Jazz Institute released 6-CD set titled "The Complete Crazy Sunday at the Lighthouse" September 13, 1953. Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars. Many previously unreleased songs. Great notes by Ken Poston. Quote

T.D. Posted yesterday at 05:10 PM Report Posted yesterday at 05:10 PM (edited) +1 on both the Tubby Hayes and Hemphill. I also like this: Edited yesterday at 05:24 PM by T.D. Quote
Dub Modal Posted yesterday at 07:16 PM Report Posted yesterday at 07:16 PM Braxton seems to only release boxes at this point but these 3 are ones I go back to the most. Quote
Dub Modal Posted yesterday at 08:19 PM Report Posted yesterday at 08:19 PM This one from Luaka Bop as well, if anything to get this material back available in reasonable ways One more. Great thread topic Quote
colinmce Posted 23 hours ago Report Posted 23 hours ago (edited) unfortunately in the larger jazz CD world (i.e. major labels) these sort of died out around 2010, but the box sets that started to come out of the free/improv world constitute a small golden age in my book. JSngry Posted 22 hours ago Report Posted 22 hours ago I'll put in for the Sony Classical Complete Albums box sets of the last decade or so. Includes both Columbia and RCA Red Seal. Probably not of interest to many here, but for those for whom it is, great music at great prices, Real opportunities to discover some new things. Quote
jazzbo Posted 22 hours ago Report Posted 22 hours ago I love my Glenn Gould and Murray Perahia box sets. And . . . this one was a dream come true. Quote
JSngry Posted 22 hours ago Report Posted 22 hours ago This is something that I: A) would never have heard of/known about if this hadn't been released in this series B) would never have bought if not so affordably priced As it is, it's proven to be one of my favorite finds this year. Not the whole thing, mind you, but more than half of it, for sure. Them boys came to play! Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted 18 hours ago Report Posted 18 hours ago (edited) Might be a little beyond 10-15 years old. Edited 18 hours ago by Stompin at the Savoy Quote

[Italics added] This is true. So many good box sets in free/improv sector that I'm not even qualified to rank them. This is older material but I like it a lot: There's a boatload of Barry Guy box sets, many of which could qualify. I've only scratched the surface of these. No Business has released many good box sets. Won't claim any of these are "best", but I enjoy Jemeel Moondoc Muntu Recordings (although it's a 2009 release and 1 year too old), William Parker Centering, Howard Riley Complete Short Stories and Constant Change, ... mjazzg Posted 11 hours ago Report Posted 11 hours ago Evan Parker - Heraclitean Two Step Ahmed - Giant Beauty Neither are retrospectives but I didn't see that as a qualifier in the original post. Both release contemporary music of great originality. Always a plus And I agree with the Braxtons and the Morgan Lighthouse which is my favourite retrospective box in a while, such depth to it. 13 hours ago, Dub Modal said: Braxton seems to only release boxes at this point but these 3 are ones I go back to the most. I really should try the Syntax, I love the other two but the vocal element deters me Quote
mhatta Posted 9 hours ago Report Posted 9 hours ago They may be a bit short for box sets, but recently released important archives of Japanese jazz. Well worth searching for. Great 3 Complete Sessions 1994 (4 CDs) / Masabumi Kikuchi, Gary Peacock & Masahiko Togashi Complete Tohoku Sessions 1971 (3 CDs) / Kaoru Abe Masayuki Takayanagi: Archive I (5 CDs) Love Dance: Solo Live at Galerie de Café Den Tokyo 1987-1997 / Mototeru Takagi (5 CDs) Quote
