R.I.P. , I'm a fan of the ultra-psychedelic stuff like "Dark Star" and "The Other One", and of "Truckin'", whose chorus has become sort of a mantra for me.

RIP.  I saw them (the Dead) a few times back in the day, including one show after Brent passed away and Bruce Hornsby was filling in!  I didn't see any of the shows after Garcia had died, however.

I used to be a big fan, but my Dead interest falls off sharply after 1972 or so and I lost track over the years.

I am one of those Grateful Dead fans who usually felt lukewarm toward Weir's contributions.   But I know now that I used to underappreciate him.  His counterpoint was often a valuable complement to Jerry Garcia's playing and Sugar Magnolia is a damn good song.     RIP

Very sad day

Weir as a unique musician. Not a soloist but became by 71-72 a brilliant improvisor playing in between and around two of the greatest improvising musicians who ever lived in Phil Lesh & Jerry Garcia. No one sounded remotely like Bob Weir.
 

over the past 11-12 years I’ve listened to thousands of hours of Grateful Dead music. Manically in some ways. In between and around modern freely improvised music. 
 

there were never 3 guitarists together (including Phil’s 4-string electric bass) who played amplified electric improvised music near this level. Without Bob, none of this happened. The long Dark Stars, the open ended 10 to upwards of 30 minute Playing in the Bands, The Other ones, etc.

I got caught up in the Deadhead thing a bit in the 70s. Saw them several times, but started losing interest later in the decade.

Say what you will, but ‘90’s Dead was my Dead. Now, 4 of the 6 members I saw (Jerry, Bob, Phil, and Vince) are gone.
