Yeah I’m really curious how they sounded together. Thats Ayler with Tranes rhythm section right? With Ali on drums? That could definitely work.

Carlos Ward and Pharoah were part of Trane's group too, along with the Aylers. Shepp might've sat in also, but I don't have my session index handy (at a café).

If I'd been in the neighbourhood I think I would have stumped up $2.50 for that bill.

The best seats would have cost you $4.80! That's about $48 in 2026 dollars.  A great bargain for that bill.  But I have to say, the idea of listening to an extended version of the creepy "Om" by that entourage somewhat scares me, though I'd certainly be down for the 35 minute "My Favorite Things".

Strong chance that a live "Om" sounds nothing like the album version right? Is it correct to say Trane hated how that session came out and didn't want it released while he was alive? That's what I thought I read a while back.

Free the Tiberi tapes!!!

I know much of that music has circulated over the years, but I would love to have most or all of it pulled together, cleaned up, annotated, and put out in box-set form. That's my Coltrane holy grail. I'd also be happily on board for any expanded release of the Half Note recordings.

I'd still like a Bootleg Series release from the so_called Electric Jungle period.

Hear hear! Seconded! Etc!

Out of curiosity, I did a quick search for "Frank Tiberi Tapes," and one of the first hits was a Facebook post by Pat LaBarbera stating that Tiberi had made a deal with Ravi for their release. If so...😲

according to these Facebook posts we could expect those this year. Any Coltrane is good for me but I am still hoping most for later period Trane.

Been mentioned many times, but as always I would love an official release of the 1966 Newport set. I would wonder if there’s a better source hiding somewhere, but the circulating version is really not too shabby and could surely be improved.

Ravi Coltrane and Terence Blanchard are touring with a tribute concert.  I was scheduled to see it last night in Santa Barbara but they were snowed in somewhere in the east.  (In the '70s here.)

Just saw Terence Blanchard with Herbie Hancock back in November at Severance Hall in Cleveland.

I'm guessing the Japanese market will eventually reissue a bunch of titles. I'm hoping for an album called Kind of Blue. And another rare-ish one—Blue Train

They're out of print again!

That'll be amazing if the Tiberi tapes are issued via Impulse!

If/when it happens, it will definitely be a proper tribute for Coltrane's 100th. What has Tiberi been sitting on all these years? I've never heard anything from his stash.

From Ben Ratliff's Coltrane: the Story of a Sound. Many of the recordings were made at Philadelphia's Showboat in the early 1960s. It's all live performances of the classic quartet, although I think some have Roy Haynes on drums instead of Elvin (presumably from the stretch of 1963 when Elvin was out of commission). I have a couple of CD-Rs that someone sent me many years ago that includes Coltrane playing "After The Rain" on piano iirc. Guessing that audio technology 25 years on is more capable of improving the sound quality than it was when digital transfers were made in 2000.

Tiberi noticed a big difference in Coltrane in 1960… Not wanting to let this pass undocumented, Tiberi started bringing a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder into clubs to tape Coltrane’s sets… His tapes are important evidence of what Coltrane was up to at the beginning of his bandleading… When Verve records made a digital transfer of Tiberi’s tapes, in 2000, they amounted to eighty-six CDs. The sound quality, however, was deemed (by Tiberi as well as Verve) not to be good enough for release. And so an important part of Coltrane’s story remains locked up, for now.

Whoa. I've been (very much) out of the loop as far as the Tiberi tapes. 86 CDs?!? Holy moly. Perhaps Verve/Impulse has culled the best-sounding of the tapes into a logical package? Fun to speculate at least.

86 cds sound like a decent box set to me. 172 LP version for me than. With 100 versions of Giant Steps? 😅

The 86 CD box set would exceed the 83 CD (bootleg) collection of the Beatles Complete Get Back Sessions.
