Id probably get it for I am a Coltrane completist. And will listen trough the material but if its that bad I’d doubt it comes of the shelves a lot. Definitely go for the cd version.

Yeah and it might also be an indicator there isn’t much more left on the shelves I guess?

A snippet of "Satellite" has been posted as a short on YouTube. 

 

... listening to it on old laptop speakers via a YT upload obviously not the best set of circumstances for noting the audio quality, but it's pretty much what I expected, based on the Showboat recordings that have circulated for many years now. Also wondering--strange as it may seem--if it ends up being a larger-than-expected and cheaper-than-expected set, or if we get a more distilled/curated four+ disc collection. Buying it day one, whatever form it takes.

That was actually better than what I expected.  I would likely stream something before I bought.

For me, It seems like it's one of those recordings that I'd have to decide if I would be too embarrassed to play it on the radio.
A couple of nights ago, I removed from a playlist a version of "Wave" done by the Roy Porter Sound Machine. I'd forgotten how terrible the recording quality was, so after going around and around in my head about it, I replaced it with The Olympians - Sirens of Jupiter.
I think I'll wait on this one.

If that clip is representative I doubt I will buy.  I'm pretty sure I will listen to whatever becomes available for free streaming, but only once. There are so many great Coltrane recordings with good sound out there.

While I understand the reservations expressed here, it is still that case that 1960 was a very important a pivotal point in Coltrane's career.  These recordings are therefore important for Coltrane fans even if the sound quality might hinder the pure listening enjoyment.

If the tape that has already been circulating is any indicator, the sound quality might not be as bad as Bird at St. Nicks.

yeah, I guess the question that I'd have for myself is whether I need it as a physical item (box set) or if I can be fine with it digitally, for reference.

It's Coltrane and we're all hooked so naturally we are going to give it a listen.  But one wonders if the artist would have approved of people cashing in on bootleg scraps with poor sound quality.
