  2. Somewhat off-topic, but "Downtown music" is a thing in classical/"new" music as well. Kyle Gann dates that scene (but not usage) to 1961 (Yoko Ono's loft 🙂), see https://www.kylegann.com/downtown.html I'm going to look into when that usage first appeared in print.
  3. yeah, I guess the question that I'd have for myself is whether I need it as a physical item (box set) or if I can be fine with it digitally, for reference.

  5. I went back and listened to this again. You are right - it is a fantastic performance in every way. Trucks & Haynes are in great form, and Haynes is a good singer and does the songs justice there as well. Nice to have Reese Wynans in Gregg's chair on organ/keys, and also nice to have 70's ABB member Chuck Leavell on board for this show.
  6. This might be a question for Will Hermes... https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374533540/lovegoestobuildingsonfire/

  9. Does anyone any idea when this was first used in print to describe that circle of players and small DIY venues? Now it is ubiquitous but some journalist must have used it first. References to downtown jazz can be found in DownBeat as early as 1962 but that is strictly geographical discussing clubs rather than an aesthetic description.

And also to Winwood/Capaldi/Wood. 'Alone Together' and 'John Barleycorn' were classic unified albums. The first couple of Traffic albums were somewhat schizo collections of songs. Incidentally, amazing how much stronger the US version of the first traffic album is than the British version (out: "Utterly Simple" and "Hope I Never Find Me There" in: "Paper Sun", "Hole in My Shoe", and "Smiling Phases"). Weird fact: 'Low Spark of High Heeled Boys' did not chart in UK, despite going Top 10 in USA.
  11. Ella was in good voice for this late effort.
  12. Too bad--I kind of like the curves!
  13. I'm still in. Not the best seat in the park, but I can still see the game.
  14. Another big agree.. Augh...
  15. I saw that at a film festival last fall. Thought it was OK but didn't measure up to all the reviews it later received.
  16. That's the one. Good album, though his most "contemporary" one.
  17. If anyone is interested in ripping tracks from the 23 Commodore Jazz Vol. 1 LPs, I would be willing to purchase the set, have it shipped to you to rip, and then pay you for your time with the album itself. I am currently looking at the $125 set on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/397821940030?_skw=commodore+jazz+volume+1&itmmeta=01KPVDNWV43C6FT2C8C5Q3C707&hash=item5ca009113e:g:VLkAAeSwGTpp2Bjf&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAAA0GfYFPkwiKCW4ZNSs2u11xDM7f3BvUF0HUvOdpogaZ%2BKN0a20qvev2GI6hSNfXBH3FovU5620%2Fu%2FeIKCIVjzgF4WhR%2Bf80V6S3rjAeiW5gbAv9r3OvycPZEFNmRIW90zUfX%2F4Heol0dM%2F7Z4zsAJZCyt8pyYV1bwkjUIUx6Zh6Wy3GU6H2K5LyjU8E6oW83%2F3x2f1nj3qSZhg8dInc2ePpm3w1sfXvY5ExGifSTz6JqiMGhG5MfDJhopAJ8ySHd4sE9LS%2FJLC2xWorXI08%2FNOz4%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR_TN1-22Zw
  18. These are two of my favorite Ronnie Cuber recordings. The Xanadu is an early one with a greatr rhythm section. Infra-Rae is a much later album on a Dutch label. It will swing you into next week!
  19. Upcoming archival release on Blaser Music: https://samuelblaser.bandcamp.com/album/bird-food
  20. While I understand the reservations expressed here, it is still that case that 1960 was a very important a pivotal point in Coltrane's career. These recordings are therefore important for Coltrane fans even if the sound quality might hinder the pure listening enjoyment. If the tape that has already been circulating is any indicator, the sound quality might not be as bad as Bird at St. Nicks. John

    Dave Mason RIP

That multi-colored dic looked so good, I wanted to take a bite out of it! I'm glad he managed to tell his side of things in his autobiography "Only You Know and I Know", which I read last year. It was no secret that he was very ill. He and Winwood couldn't see eye to eye on the creation of Traffic's songs. He would piss Winwood off to no end when he brought in his songs written alone without the input of Winwood, Capaldi or Wood. When "Hole In My Shoe" became a huge hit in the UK, that prompted DM's first firing from Traffic. It turned out to be the best thing that could happen to DM. He came to the US and finally got recognition for his fine singing, songwriting and guitar playing RIP
