Charles Mingus Complete 1970s Atlantic box set
romualdo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sorry, my bad re wrong CD - indeed it is Mingus Moves My two versions of the Call from the box set & the individual CD sound slightly different with the flute continuing to almost the end of the track on the box set CD version whereas on the individual CD version the flute is much less audible & cuts off well before the end of the track (maybe the remix improved the volume of the flute in the mix? & these are the same tracks??) Also, the Lord Discography supports this M8394] Add Sy Johnson (arr-1) added New York, October 30 & 31, 1973 28319 Opus 4 Atl SD1653, (G)R2-71454 [CD] 28320 Moves (hg,dh vcl) - - 28321 Wee (1) - - 28322 Flowers for a lady - - 28323 Newcomer - - 28324 Opus 3 - - 28325 The call (take 1) Atl (G)R1-695177 28325 The call (take 2) Atl (G)R2-71454 [CD] 28326 Big Alice (take 1) (1) Atl (G)R1-695177 28326 Big Alice (take 2) (1) - 28326 Big Alice (take 3) (1) - 28326 Big Alice (take 4) (1) Atl (G)R2-71454 [CD] Note: All titles from Atlantic SD1653 also on Atlantic Quadradisc QD1653, (Eu)50040, (Jap)P8450A. Charles Mingus Complete 1970s Atlantic box set
l p replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
the bonus versions of big alice and the call are on mingus moves, not on 'three or four shades...'. the call on the cd box is the same take as on mingus moves. so, the vinyl version of the box set should have a new alternate take of 'the call', and 2 more takes of big alice, which are not available on the cd version of the box. discogs: vinyl outtakes: O1 Music For "Todo Modo" (Take 1) 9:47 on cd box too O2 Big Alice (Take 1) 4:55 on cd box too O3 Big Alice (Take 2) 5:44 P1 Big Alice (Take 3) 4:54 P2 Big Alice (Take 4) 5:44 probably on mingus moves P3 The Call (Take 1) 7:15* P4 The Call (Take 2) 7:16* * one of these is on mingus moves. -

35 degrees. . . going to be a bit cooler for s spell I think. Part of me wishes for more snow, its’ back to bare trees everywhere the eye can spy, which is not my favorite sylvan look. . . . Starting off to break the still morning quiet with a fascinating trio disc, “Healnig–the music of Carla Bley” by Steve Carendas, Ben Allison and Ted Nash–Sonic Camera cd. Seems perfect music for this morning.

I once had an original Contemporary pressing of this LP, it sounded great.

The Cry was reissued by Craft https://www.discogs.com/release/31677476-Prince-Lasha-Quintet-Featuring-Sonny-Simmons-The-Cry Great minds think alike!

there was a nice reissue of The Cry in the recent Contemporary series on Craft Recordings https://craftrecordings.com/products/the-cry-contemporary-records-acoustic-sounds-series-180g-lp

It is very strange that The Cry and Firebirds have not been rereleased, particularly since Sonny Simmons seems to be increasingly well known in the Instagram-type circles that seem to drive jazz reissues.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??
clifford_thornton replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
oughta dig those out myself. -
I adore this record. The compositions, at least to me, sound heavily influenced by Ornette, but they're still their own bag. Simmons' playing is fantastic (what the heck mouthpiece is he using on the cover, a Buscher? note too he's playing a plastic alto on the cover). And Lasha isn't playing a bass clarinet; it's almost certainly the Eb alto clarinet.

Sonny Rollins: A Night at the Village Vanguard (Tone Poet -- 3 LPs)
Late replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Re-issues
Listening to this (2024 packaging) again this evening. The sound is so much more present—Rollins' horn in particular. I first encountered this music on the two McMaster CDs from the late 80's, and got used to the sound there. This new package is a gift (I think) to listeners who are encountering the music for the very first time (though young/new listeners are probably listening to it through Spotify. 😉) At any rate, it's fun to go through the music all over again, as if for the first time. Yes, Uncle Don's not here, but other than that—as close as one can get to a definitive package, I'd say. And preserved for future generations!👍 -
