  1. Past hour
  2. I must've glossed over the LITA box if it was noted in this thread. Interesting.
  3. +1, depends on price point and reviews on how much of an imorivement it is. I like the 1995 box.
  4. I never picked up the Resonance set because a) Zev turns me off and b) I have the Douglas/FM LPs and Other Aspects, but reading this thread, I probably should.
  5. I didn't realize Light in the Attic was doing a CD version of this set as well. On the fence about upgrading from the 1995 box--in the meantime this thread has inspired me to start revisiting it. Oh hey look, it's lunch time! 😉
  6. I keep telling myself I'm going to delve into the Dream Syndicate and Steve Wynn at some point, yet all I've done is listen to the Baseball Project. I need to rectify that. np: Speed of the Stars
  7. To be clear, I do own the Renonance 3cd set outright too — bought it new from Dusty iirc, shorty after it came out. But yesterday was my first time hearing it with earbuds (albeit via Pandora) — in mono, of course.
  8. Lacy, Rutherford, Stevens, Parker, Bailey. I think those artists were perfectly documented by Martin's efforts, though certainly there were a lot of others who benefited from his keen ear and dedication. I was glad to have a few nice communications with him over the years, and he participated in the WPI Jazz Institute zoom roundtables occasionally as well. As for the stock/catalogue, my assumption is that his surviving partner is sorting through grief and logistics as best she can. As I recall she is older and this is probably quite challenging for her. I have no intel, but can only assume this is the case. There are a few Emanem CDs I never picked up and would like to. Hopefully they find a way over here eventually (de minimis cancellations be damned!).
  9. Today
  10. Wow, there's more tension in this thread than on the Plugged Nickel set itself 😂 Seriously, though, it is very odd that the music has not been re-released on CD or LP since the boxed set/doorstop as far as I can tell. I have fond memories of first hearing some of it at my aunt's house (she used to post here), when I was first getting interested in jazz. The band was on fire and their collective search is riveting. I bought the set used, eventually, for a price that was not too insurmountable. Miles' 100th is next year, and maybe we can expect some of these boxes to come back into circulation.
  11. Last week I was in Ann Arbor for EdgeFest. 4-5 sets a night for four days. Good mix of music. Highlights for me were Air Legacy, Myra Melford Splash Trio and Darius Jones Trio.
  12. That's enough. I'm putting you on ignore
  13. Noodling is also quite specifically what jazz sounds like to those who don't get it - either temporarily or just in general... When people don't get Terry Riley or Wagner or Death Metal, they probably don't talk about noodling... Be all that as it may, what matters is that we don't lose further members to stupid discussions that got harsh just out of nothing
  14. Co-sign. I have a brother and a friend who are Milwaukee fans, so I’m pulling for them to ultimately win it all, but I’d be happy to see Seattle come out on top as well. Anybody but the Dodgers.
  15. Last night, Jonathan Fisher Quartet with Shelley Carrol at the Balcony Club.
  16. The Agency on Paramount+. It's one of the more realistic spy shows I've watched, with budgetary implications on everything they do, which is unlike most any other spy show I've ever watched. Sometimes spy/CIA shows like this can get so convoluted, with conspiracies interlaced with more conspiracies topped with double agents to the point you can't figure out the good guys from the bad guys. This one seems a bit different, with those conspiracies and double agents running throughout and yet maintaining a decent story line that seems clear. Of course, I'm not done yet and they could throw a nutty curveball in the next episode. My wife & I like this show. It's better than the original Belgian version, HPI: Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (on Hulu), which seems to have a few of the police personnel being made into caricatures of a modern-day Barney Fife and has the main character do some really dumb things which a brilliant-minded person would probably not do.
  17. Django Reinhardt: Django Reinhardt En Belgique 1942 (Europe's Greatest Contribution To Jazz). Polydor 2344 146 [France 1982]
  18. Listening to disc 1 of this new release from Japan, Miles Davis “Paris Jazz Festval - Salle Pleyel - 10/1/1964” 2 disc hybrid SACD set from Sony. 1200×1200 173 KB Followed by “Carmen McRae” Bethlehem US cd 170×170 10 KB
  19. Definitely go for smallish markets, and or teams that have never won. MIL/SEA

  21. This looks to be a Spotify version of the Pumpkin LP, "Rifftide". I never could figure out if those Pumpkin LPs were legit. I think I still have the Roy Eldridge/Richie Kamuca LP in the racks.
  22. Really? OK you explain what he means. He says he refuses to talk to anyone about music unless they are up to his standards of music understanding. When it was pointed out that we talk about music here he shifts to oh I meant in the real world. So what does that mean? He's ok with us because he can always turn us off? In what world does it make sense to say I won't talk about music with you unless you are up to my level of understanding but nothing personal against you, I only do that when the person is in front of me? WTF? We are qualitatively different because we are not in close proximity? Please make it make sense. It's nonsense and I am done with it because the conversation keeps getting pulled into Jim's hangups and emotional responses to the word noodling instead of the Plugged Nickel sessions.
  23. I consider myself a serious jazz aficionado, and depending on my mood, there are times when I cannot endure too much "noodling". It is like playing and thinking, "do i really need that many notes?" It is part of jazz, playing licks over the chord changes or whatever. The point is whether it makes sense to the player, or to the listener, are you experimenting - that band certainly did - and so on. I think it comes down to saying you do not like or get something without making negative comments. Talking about music or anything without judging. It is hard, I know. "Noodling" can be such a negative term, unless you use quotation marks.
