They were both juiced, which was their 'natural' state at the time (late 1960s). I've seen them many times, on and off stage, both alone and together. Ben became slow (and sentimental), but Don could still play his ass off even when he hardly could stand upright. He drank three double whiskys and smoke a big reefer anyway before playing at all.

I'm sad to read that Larry's phone has been disconnected. Being hospitalized or in a nursing home doesn't usually = no phone, so something bad might have happened.

A perfect disc to listen to with a blank sheet approach is "Sonny Meets Hawk!". I have read somewhat opposed reviews as regards how Sonny Rollins challenged Hawk.

I see there are a huge variety of different listening prefernces among Bird fans, either complete with all the laternates or master takes only. So, further to the JSP public domain set that Mikeweil showed, here is another approach that might satisfy those who like to experience the music in the exact compiling and track order of the original or "period" releases from way back. (Yes I know the CD set shown under the below link is one of those P.D. sets that some will immediately sneer at. But if found cheaply ... - My copy, for example, came my way at a clearout sale several years ago - and at 1 EUR for a TEN-CD set you cannot go wrong and might as well consider it a freebie ). Anyway ... this set combines the music "as is" from a number of 10" and 12" LPs originally released in the 50s and early 60s on Dial, Savoy, Mercury, Clef, Jazz Workshop, Le Jazz Cool and some others. So as a complementary item with a somewhat different compiling order it might serve some purpose here and there ... https://www.discogs.com/release/11693423-Charlie-Parker-Milestones-Of-A-Legend

So Büchmann-Møller did not dwell on the clash of personalities or animosities that seems to have developed between Webster and Byas during that session (as Con Chapman explained in his Byas biography)? It seems easy to imagine that they were not at their top on that occasion, given these problems. Will try to listen to that disc with a "blank sheet" approach anyway. @Late: Thanks for your feedback.

In his biography of Ben Webster, Frank Büchman-Møller is very dismissive of that disc, qualifying it as "(...)- with the exception of a couple of musical highlights- a disappointment, as neither soloist played up to par, and the rhythm section consisting of Tete Montoliu, Peter Trunk and Al Heath never merge as hoped". Then, Büchman-Møller states that the album demostrates how differently the two saxophonists had developed from the same background, with Coleman Hawkins as the primary reference. I cannot concur with the first statement, of course.

Some 25 years ago, I was very reluctant to deep dive in Keith Jarrett's discography, maybe constrained by his "persona". I see things very differently today. And this disc is a beauty.

I've been trying the Ludos wired. They sound fine, but fall out of my ear when I move my head. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DP972MV7

Yeah. Then again they did Hubbard, Hutcherson etc sets and the music was already mostly easily available. If they issue a Dexter Gordon set I'll probably buy it. Because I just reflexively buy new Mosaics. Never been disappointed. But I guess I would prefer they focus on things that are harder to find in reasonable sound.

My first exposure to Bird was through Phil Schaap and then I purchased the Yardbird Suite that I mentioned awhile ago. I then followed that with The Complete Dial Sessions on Jazz Classics (which was a very useful set), then a large Savoy and Dial set from one of the Spanish companies, which I sold when Savoy issued the Complete Savoy and Dial. Like you I have a lot of live stuff, plus the Mosaic and the 10cd Verve set and anything else that comes out that may be interesting. Stash put out some interesting CDs that I have.

Stumbled across this series of live recordings from Finnish Radio (the series is called Jazz-Liisa). It looks like there are 15 in the series, and the entire series is up on Bandcamp: https://jazzliisa.bandcamp.com/music All except #1 (Unisono Quartet) and #13 (Eero Koivistoinen) appear to be available on Apple Music (at least in Canada). Interestingly, I have one CD by Eero Koivistoinen (Wahoo), though I haven't pulled it out in a very long time. I'll try to track it down soon.

Yes, that’s a Select. The Keystones are sufficiently distinct from his earlier BNs that it doesn’t make sense to join them together in a regular Mosaic and if you take out the Keystones there’s not enough there.

Ha, yeah you might get the rest! Great call. Another album now on my radar.

12 is Clifford Thornton (the real one) from The Gardens of Harlem, tenor player is Roland Alexander. The cut is called "O Desayo." Bassist is Andy González. Guess I need to listen to the rest of it!

Good news, and glad to have you back. I owe you a call, just been swamped/under various rocks...

Gary Windo on track 12? I mistakenly named Shepp above when I meant Ayler, and I don't think it's him. But Windo plays a lot like Ayler.

Not particularly cheap but I’ve been using these for over a year and am happy with them. https://www.bose.com/c/earbuds/open?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Sitelink&utm_id=20465668972&utm_term=NA&utm_content=155356550311&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20465668972&gbraid=0AAAAAD3l1X1uK-LqzLYPXlIRLPr-5XCm6&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuYXM4ZW3kwMVsXBHAR2rBACHEAAYASACEgIYBfD_BwE Not noise canceling so you are aware of your surroundings.
