  1. Past hour
  2. Larry Young and Elvin Jones!
  3. RIP. Papa Joe, Buddy, Klook, Roy, Art B, Art T, Max, Sherry, Philly Joe, Elvin, Tony, Billy, Paul, and now Jack... each had their own distinct personality, and you could tell who it was just by hearing them play. They're all gone now. Am I the only one who thinks drums have become so bland lately? I also quite like Jack as a modal pianist.
  4. I was a season ticket holder with the Boston Celtics for close to a decade and in the old Boston Garden, they most definitely had a "basketball organist".
  5. Yesterday
  6. Alan Dawson & Richard Davis were locked and loaded for quite a few years with Booker Ervin for his "books".
  7. Peeter Uuskyla, Peter Brötzmann: Holy Drinker. Omlott MLR7002 [Sweden 2016]
  8. He even recorded and gigged with the Bill Evans Trio back in 1967-68. RIP.
  9. Kenny Barron - Live at Fat Tuesdays (1988) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_at_Fat_Tuesdays
  10. YES!!!!
  11. Ballpark organ used to be very much a thing! In Dallas anyway, so was cafeteria organ. Luby's! Miss Inez (also a ballpark organist!) was those longest lived, but Ted Cassidy (yes, Lurch!) also had the gig for a while

  13. Well done Organissimo Forums. All tracks identified. #6 had me from the beginning of the first time I heard it. One of those tracks that wraps you in a sound world from the start - others that do that for me are Soft and Furry by Johnny Griffin, Africa by John Coltrane, and McCoy Tyner's intro to Coltrane's Body and Soul. Escoffery's solo keeps the mood going for me. If I couldn't tolerate showy playing I'd have to give up Art Tatum and James Carter - and to that I say - no way! And Joe Locke sneaks into my top 5 on the instrument, although I wouldn't expect everyone to agree.
  14. Donald Bailey with Hampton Hawes
  15. Chico Hamilton with Gerry Mulligan. I think that's in the vein of what you're after...
  16. Hamid Drake and William Parker in the drums/bass category.
  17. I have Spanier's studio big band recordings (there weren't not many) on a Decca Ace of Hearts LP, and I have an LP's worth of airshots of his big band (all that were ever discovered, at least as of the vinyl era) that was released on Jazz Archives (JA-30).
  18. Thanks for this re Teagarden and Spanier. I think I may have some of those sides scattered here and there and will hunt for them after I’ve finished absorbing the Crosby Mosaic.
  19. Is "ballpark organist" a genre? I grew up in the Chicago area...Nancy Faust, who played at Comiskey Park for decades and Chicago Stadium for a few years, was a big deal. https://chicagoreader.com/music/the-secret-history-of-chicago-music/nancy-faust-organist-white-sox-comiskey/
  20. Another one I have is Coltrane and Art Taylor. It should be remembered that Taylor was the drummer of choice on Trane's Prestige dates. It's hard to compete with the legendary pairing of Coltrane and Elvin, but there is a lot of fine stuff on these early records.
  21. Plenty of good pairings...my thanks to everyone. I'm thinking more along the lines of players who were not in actual working groups for considerable (or decent) amount of time. Thus I would not choose Ron Carter and Tony Williams since they served so long with Miles (and you could count VSOP as well). Or Haden and Blackwell, since they were key players in the Ornette quartet and in Old and New Dreams. But then again it might be cool to spotlight Carter/Williams outside of Miles /VSOP, or Holland and DeJohnette outside of Gateway
  22. Gerhard, my deepest condolences. It's a very sad time after this ... My wife died of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) eight years ago. I had chosen Vijay Iyer's piano version of Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" for the memorial service.
  23. I'll take Bob Blumenthal seriously about Black organ sounds...when? Never? Bon Porter, probably. It's a problem for me when critical orthodoxy is informed by cultural homogeneity. Things become more about projection than actual understanding.
