  1. Past hour
  2. I'm a big fan of this one, however for some reason or another I got rid of it at one point and it's not so easy to replace for the amount I bought it for the first time:
  3. Yes, see also track 1 on Side II on LP and track 09 on CD: " Malipiero's midnight theatre", dedicated to Luigi Malipiero, director of the theatre!
  4. Returning to this with more time... 1 - I get more Hubbard than Morgan from the trumpet. Is it their date? As I've learned here, drum mic'ing can indicate time frame of recording, and that here is where all parts of the kit seem mic'd. That should indicate a more recent recording but I still don't have any guesses. 2 - The playing is great and I like some of the interactions, especially in the last 3rd. Sounds like they could play this more balls out and muscular but they ended up striving for subtlety which at worst is getting too cute with things, but these players keep it on the better side of cerebral because there's some good convos in here. I like this the more i listen to it actually. 3 - Charles Lloyd-esque, but the playing from the tenor sounds less direct. Overall the song is nice. Near the end it dips into trio level and that was my favorite part. 4 - This is different for sure. I have no guesses. Eager to find out who this is. 5 - Ha, I like the beginning. There's some humor there. Especially as to how they follow that up. I really like this but no guesses. 6 - Looks like this one has been guessed and now I can't believe I missed this song and guitarist the first time around. Nice add. 7 - Excellent. No idea but I dig it. Will need to revisit the rest soon.
  5. this whole episode-- though one pick numerous others-- shows Sanborn's great range and empathy. Hard to criticize his solo career choices when he did so much for others also; getting paid for it, granted, but not just... Interesting to note / compare Hiram Bullock with Sanborn (tv, live, record) with Bullock's work with Carla Bley too. (this also instructive for those (mostly white) people who (still) patronize Stevie Ray Vaughan, watch him kill it himself not just with Night Music band but as sideman on closing "Sailin' Shoes" ** also with Wayne Shorter, Carlos Santana ** also with some trumpet player excelling with mute and mullet both
  6. The Cover Art by Shelby McPherson has strong links to Andy Warhol ....
  7. Yeah, that's a fun one -- haven't dug it out in ages.
  8. Today
  9. I am confused. So you are saying that the album was recorded by Werner Berndsen of the Würzburg Music School but actually took place at the Torturmtheater?
  10. with Dewey Redman, Sirone, and Errol Parker
  11. Definitely NOT mutually exclusive, I would think! Just two different angles on the same thing: musicophilia. Different jobs, different "responsibilities."
  12. Yes, I agree! Oistrakh/Ormandy is a magnificent performance, my "go to" for Sibelius' VC. But I will also confess that -- on purely subjective grounds -- Heifetz's vibrato does not appeal to me. I MUCH prefer Oistrakh's sound (or others) in most repertoire, relative to Heifetz.
  13. R.I.P I enjoyed Sanborn on Hutcherson's Enjoy the View, as well as the occasional appearance with John McLaughlin. Not the kind of guy who would be discussed much on these boards, but he had jazz credentials. I'm guessing he was ill for some time, as I don't think he released a record in the past 10 years.
  14. Nielsen's music strikes me as being full of "life force." It has a sort of transcendent, supra-human vitality. I'd recommend his Fourth Symphony, subtitled "Inextinguishable." That was Nielsen's first work that captured my ear. I think this image does a great job of representing Nielsen's music: The living EARTH & SEA. @Referentzhunter, just to confirm: mister goatman refers to W.A. Mozart, correct?
  15. @ "mikeweil" : when using "JPC Pictures", the Cover Art is marred to a langer extent with a "JPC Banner" ..... btw said disfigurement is only visible for third parties, but not for you as poster 🧐😵‍💫 ....
  16. ahh ... Clara Haskil/Ferenc Fricsay giving a nice Mozart experience. Classic stuff. Bye the way for some reason Ferenc Fricsay delivers most of the time a majestic performance (for me). And yes, Haskil has probably a proper connection with mister goatman himself !
  17. Presto has the set in four pieces, each of which corresponds exactly to two disks from the original set. $26 each for cd quality and I think $20 for mp3. (Always better to get the cd quality imo). Depending on which cds you already have you might be able to get the rest of the set by buying three downloads. The discography is here: http://web.archive.org/web/20120303081131/http://www.mosaicrecords.com/discography.asp?number=251-MD-CD&price=$136.00&copies=8 CDs
  18. ... and what leads to make you enjoy his compositions if i may ask so ? Is there any spiritualism ? Any passages you recommend me to listen to for clear impressions ?
  19. Big Ears 2025 Dates: March 27-March 30, 2025.
