  2. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40148726/astros-ronel-blanco-ejected-foreign-substance-check You'd think the Astros would be extra committed to not cheating, given it's sort of their permanent reputation nowadays. But no. And I know other teams cheat as well, but they're posterboys for it. The Astros were my favorite team from about 1982 until the discovery of the cheating in the 2017 WS season, so about 35 years. Since then I've lived in Philly (and now Phoenix), so my loyalties are with the Fightin' Phils. Went to the last NLCS game in 2022 where they beat the Padres to advance to the WS, and then Game 4 of the WS, where the Astros beat Philly and then ultimately won (maybe legitimately this time?) the WS. Also went to 3 Phillies/Diamondbacks games during the regular season here in Phoenix in 2023, and then Game 4 of the NLCS vs the DBacks as well. So again, go Phillies!

  4. Apparently the deck they brought into the club was 7.5. or maybe it was a tape conservation thing. Either way, Rudy immediately took those tapes back to his house and transferred them all to 15, and that's what's been used ever since. Or so they say. As for the sound, every recording made at the Vanguard I've ever heard has a muffled sound in some form or fashion. It's not at all a "live" room. But this was the first attempt recording there, right? Hold on to that RVG, though. In this case, recording order matters!
  5. But does anybody play any differently than usual? Not really? They all had good days, but they all had lots of good days. So maybe the point is that Blue Note screwed Grant Green by not having Duke Pearson involved in all of his records? Maybe, but not really. I will say this, they got great players, picked wonderful material, arranged it well, had it rehearsed well, and then hit what was obviously a good vibe when it came time to roll tape. What you can give Duke Pearson credit for (besides the charts) is not fucking up any of that, which is no mean feat in and of itself. It's its own art, really.
  6. Discogs says that he played with Otis Redding. And so does that obit.
  7. I'm not going to read all of it, but in memory of Alice Munro's passing, RIP, I'll read a couple of the shorter short stories from The Love of a Good Woman tonight. I've been somewhat slowly going through her collections in order and only got to the midway point last year. The collection Love of a Good Woman is the next up. I think my favorite overall collection so far is Moons of Jupiter, followed by Lives of Girls and Women.
  8. OK so I just got this… And now I don't have access to my RVG copy of this which was redone by van Gelder, and I like this very much but I don't think the sound is any better than the RVG mastering. Wouldn't Rudy have used his original tapes to remaster? I do wonder why the hell he did at it 7.5 IPs but that's another matter. Also another strange thing to me is that it's still not really well EQ'd. I do wonder about mastering engineers and what they do and don't hear. But still it's great to have it all in one place.
  9. I've got a few albums with him on them, but haven't heard his name in a while. He died in 2009.
  10. Old people get better at ballads. Meaning trumps proof.
  11. Did Ambrose Jackson leave behind any kind of biographical trail?
  12. Truth be told, most jazz players are licks players. The art is in how the licks are utilized.
  13. I think GG was primarily a "licks" player. He had a certain number (not that many) of riffs that he'd recycle in his solos. I don't think he had the chops to be a full-time improvising jazz musician. As for Idle Moments being such a great record, credit should probably go to Duke Pearson. Don't get me wrong: I have most of what GG recorded and enjoy it, but I recognize his limitations.
  14. Baseball sucks. Except when it doesn't. But right now it does.
  15. FWIW, Feelin' the Spirit and Goin' West are two of my favorite Grant Green albums. And if someone found a tape of him playing Xmas tunes, I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
  16. I just Googled "Sanborn Gil Evans" and then filtered for videos. This was in there. As for more, probably so. The poster says that they got it from " a website that no longer exists", which no doubt means a blog. The odds of there being just that one track being recorded strike me as being quite remote.
  17. How'd you find this and is more of this concert out there?
  18. Listening to it now. It sounds just fine.
