I just noticed my collection data base has this sequence - Ljuba Welitsch, Bobby Wellins, Dickie Wells. Hmmm. Three serious artists not otherwise bumping shoulders.
Any other random lists to offer?
I have to keep reminding myself how much I appreciate Teddy Wilson. I am actually playing a cdr I made of this lp plus 6 more titles recorded the same day. The others are Jesper Lundgard and Ed Thigpen.
I have a real weakness for performances of "struggle" and ultimate triumph. Possibly my favorite example is the BBC recording of Bruckner 8, Horenstein/LSO from 1970.
New World has also released a previously unissued MJR disc of Earl Hines playing Cole Porter. Bill Weilbacher, guiding light and financier of MJR, also shared some of his recordings with the Australian Swaggie label including a wonderful "Earl Hines plays George Gershwin" disc.
A wonderful Julian Dash lp with a killin' Jimmy Shirley has never been reissued as far as I know, but these two are available:
There was an early Mosaic box of solo piano recordings from the label.
Cruising to Cologne at the moment - meeting with guitarist/composer Scott Fields in the afternoon and he is taking us to an event - I'm sure it will be interesting.
We leave for Amsterdam on Monday. Couple of days there, on way to Vienna (2 days), Budapest (2 days) and Prague (2 days) via a river cruise - lots of stops in between. PM if interested in meeting for coffee, lunch, etc.
