  1. Penguins should know.
  2. e e cummings F F Bosworth Gigi Gryce
  3. I spent about a week around him when we recorded our Warne Marsh date with the SuperSax rhythm section. On Sunday night, last day of the gig, Med slid into a booth with Lou Levy, Jake Hanna and me. He said "So you're the guy wearing out my best players" and slapped me on the back. A very warm guy.
  4. Geez, I thought he was younger than I am.
  5. Most CTI records were pressed by Columbia. Quality depends on where you lived - East Coast got discs from the Pittman, NJ plant (reputedly #3), in the Midwest they came from Terre Haute, IN (#2) and West Coasters got them from Santa something (#1).
  6. Nobody said box set. I haven't been able to shake the info loose. A friend has a copy of the extra quartet material, hasn't listened to recently and can't lay his hands on it right now. He said he thought the "sameness" of the takes, material and group sound killed the project. I will keep on him about it to get details.
  7. The other Bauer is mighty fine as well My first tier modern day trombonists start with Wolter Wierbos, George Lewis, Swell and a nod to Jeb Bishop. But let me tell you, live Ben Gerstein is quite the improvisor - probably somewhat in the mold of Swell. In my estimation, the other Bauer is the lesser.
  8. The fate of most Arista/Freedom LPs it seems. I was at one of the recording sessions for this (in Boston). It was reissued on cd by Black Lion.
  9. Phillip recorded with Lazar for Argo a couple of years later (1962), and played fairly regularly with him in St. Louis, so it is possible but I’d guess it might be Chauncey Williams who is on the Argo Space Flight (1960). I don’t have that record to compare.
  10. Agreed about Bauer with a nod to Steve Swell.
  11. They have a bunch of material, especially old vinyl, not displayed in the store.
  12. Same here.
  13. Artful Dodger Joe Dodge Ron Crotty
  14. This information is mostly the same as printed in the Raben book I mentioned (from 1969) but he added the following timings for the October 12, 1963 session: Consequences (7:34) Trio take 1 (8:34) Trio take 2 (6:44)
  15. I have a 1969 publication by Erik Raben called "A Discography of Free Jazz". It lists sessions by Ayler, Cherry, Coleman, Sanders, Shepp and Taylor. It says New York.
  16. This was originally part of a Roulette lp box called something like "The Birdland Story". I got a copy in Des Moines while in high school.
  17. Since these are simple black/white negs and prints (and not color separations) I would guess they a smaller than life size. Record companies frequently made negs like this to have on file for catalogs, magazine ads, inner sleeves, etc.
  18. I would pull the plug. Personnel is incorrect - Lloyd Buchanan, bass; Lloyd Turner, drums according to my notes.
  19. Bad news.
  20. Remember Henry and Steve playing their reference tapes (right after the session) for me and Terry Martin in Terry's apartment.
