  1. How do we see current posts? I can't find it.
  2. I'd guess Dexter.
  3. My Mazda is speedy but don't think I'll make it.
  4. Welcome to the 1980s.
  5. One of the really original players within the idiom he encountered. Not that common.
  6. Let it go folks. Dave meant well, made an unintended mistake and all is well in the world.
  7. Gee, I thought you were talking about the cloth pattern (houndstooth)! Everyone had one of those stingy brims in the late '50s/early '60s.
  8. Agreed. That's the point. Mingus deliberately recorded more music than he would use. Why not listen to false starts, mistakes, and between-song-banter too? That's the difference between listening to a session and a finished album. I tend to agree with this. The Mingus Dynasty edits worked for me too. I had a similar disappointment when listening to Monk Live at the It Club on cd - the power of the performances seemed diluted. Sadly, economic circumstances led me to dumping my lps before the new cds arrived. After the fact editing is usually done for a reason. That said, it is interesting to have the "complete" performances for archival purposes.
  9. If anyone bought a copy from elsewhere, sent me a PM an I'll send a corrected copy along.
  10. Name of store and address please. Wife and daughter will need to know.
  11. I agree with you, but you really should have the complete Plugged Nickel set. Yikes, I just saw the prices asked for this set! It is wonderful though.
  12. Not sure if I posted this before (didn't read thru all the posts) but a favorite moment was when Jerry Lee "called out" Ed Shaughnessy on the Tonight Show.
  13. Granz was a millionaire at that point and could have done better but he didn't need to and it really didn't seem to be in him. I have tons of respect and twinges of regret for his work.
  14. Thank god for Norman but why the heck wasn't he better.
  15. Test pressing of Paramount 6059. This was issued in 1973 and is a rehearsal with Jimmy Rowles and Artie Shapiro. It was also included in the big Verve Billie box.
  16. Between this an facebook, enough.
  17. Evans was stuck with the parameters of the life he chose. Others went elsewhere. No big deal and some personalities go with Bill and some move on. As a side note, I really like the earliest Evans and the late recordings on The Last Waltz. I have many misgivings about the rest. YMMV.
  18. Your wife is doing Yoda and you don't want to disturb her?
  19. Tape baking does not have anything to do with it. Improper storage can add to the problem but does not always cause it. "Proper tape storage" usually means "tails out" so the echo is buried in later sounds. In the '60s the tape from most manufacturers was "hot" enough to print through on the first pass of the tape heads. My early sessions exhibited print on the first playback during the session. I have spent untold hours removing it from my reissues. I have been about 95% effective. On lps (and maybe 78s) there is another pre-echo caused by some sort of molecule shifting in the metal plating process - this was explained to me by RVG. Somewhere on my Mac I have a screen shot of the edits made for the reissue of the solo tracks from Congliptious. Astounding.
  20. Here is a message I posted in another forum: Hot Fives by some trumpet player. I have the Sony/Schapp and the Chronological Classics versions (dumped the JSP because I preferred the Classics on average and bought the cheap reissue of the Sony for comparison). I know a fair amount about the various recording/manufacturing practices through the years but wonder why both versions of King of the Zulus have "post-echo"? Would this have been a plating problem with the original master? That's all I can figure. Maybe I'll post this under another topic. This post has been edited by Chuck Nessa: Today, 06:44 PM and Clifford posted this: Please do; the pre/post-echo thing is always a curiosity to me, especially as we were taught in audio preservation courses that it resulted from the condition of the tapes. When you hear it on an LP it leads one to wonder if they were damaged before they got the chance to deteriorate. I can add that I am the master of pre/post-echo on tape. I can answer all kinds of questions about that.
  21. Like most O posters, he needs porn, junk food and beer.
  22. I remember a dinner (at a convention for independent labels) where my good friend Bob Porter said "I don't think there's a record producer alive who doesn't think they could make better records with those artists".
  23. Chet Baker composed very few tunes, so it is unlikely much money is due his estate for Canadian releases since the '80s.
