  1. So it isn't about Ike.
  2. Are you certain it isn't really ME?
  3. Screw the lamb (take that as you will). Nothing beats a great sausage sandwich for the holidays.
  4. Dylan Thomas Thomas Pynchon Hepzibah Pynchon Hephzibah Menuhin Peter Mennin Karl Menninger
  5. Who we talkin' 'bout?
  6. How about flipping the coin and adding Benny Goodman with the Budapest Quartet in Mozart?

  8. But don't you think that it is the small-group nature of these recordings that make them especially attractive? That is one reason why I for one find them so attractive. Oh, sure, but I think they'd like to do the big-band material as well. Cuscuna said several years ago, when I inquired about a possible 1930s full-orchestra set, that Sony wasn't quite willing yet to part with some of the "jazz giant" holdings they had. Maybe they licensed these small-group sessions because a large number of the recordings have been on the market for 15 years. In any event, in the booklet to the new Mosaic Sonny Greer is quoted as raving about how great the late-1930s band was, better in his opinion than the Blanton-Webster unit. I may e-mail Scott Wenzel and find out if they're contemplating having an eventual go at that era, although I'd imagine they're focused on getting out the Goodman set first. I'm hesitating on the current box (I have all the master takes and many of the alts in some form) but would buy an orchestral box in a minute - and I have that stuff too.
  9. My favorite Idaho is Bud and Griff on Xanadu. If you have it, check it out.
  10. Saw the "movie clips" earlier and think the actor isn't "pretty enough" to be a convincing Pepper. The clips are fun though.
  11. John Lee Hooker - Alternative Boogie
  12. Don't know about Chandos. You are probably thinking of Unicorn. They had a 2 disc set of 1-8 and a single of 9-13. At the time I felt she dropped off at the end of her career and never bothered to get the late quartets disc. I see all 3 discs are reissued in an inexpensive set on Regis. It's available from Berkshire for $12. More props for Smetana.
  13. What Rosco said.
  14. I've spoken to all the authorities and you guys can never play in Whitehall. I'm working on Montague tomorrow.
  15. Beyond "concerts", where tables were set up in the lobby, I only recall one jazz musician selling records on a gig. That one musician was Art Pepper - on the comeback trail. Laurie frequently had a box of Contemporary lps on a table.
  16. I feel the later Holiday is a deeper communicator than the "fresh voiced" singer on the early sides. I would never consider being without either.
  17. Fans of the Bartok quartets could do worse than investigating the work of Elizabeth Maconchy. I have her first 8 quartets.
  18. Steve lived in Michigan, was an internet friend and we exchanged recordings over the years. He battled brain cancer for a long time and has finally succumbed. He died on the 7th. I was greeted with this information when I returned home tonight after a few weeks away. Thanks for the input Steve.
  19. Clem covered most of it. I have a soft spot for Simpson.
  20. J.R. screwed a chippy in my living room around 1965 and forced me to lie about it. He used to pick me up at 10 am, drive to the Airliner bar for bloody marys and then watch chicks walking on the street while he sipped on a bottle of cough syrip. "Those were the days".
  21. Do we need another thread for "wish lists"?
  22. One of the best trumpet players in the Henderson band.
  23. FWIW, my taste in Beethoven leans toward the "severe" - hence my taste for Schnabel and Rosen. Next comes an interest in the "mercurial" with '50s Kempff and early Brendel. After that my interest falls off quickly. I can imagine a "romantic" cycle by Fischer but it doesn't seem to exist.
