  1. Stop taking the meds?
  2. Looks like a typical Organissimo crowd.

  5. When I interviewed Eddie Higgins, he spoke of what a thrill it was to be Hawkins' accompanist at the first Playboy jazz festival. Checking the transcript, Eddie mentions that he believes the music has been issued on four different LPs, fwiw. He also tells an amusing story about Hawkins showing up at the very last instant before they were to go on, and never acknowledged Eddie at all. He asked him what he wanted to play, and he grunted at him. He suggested some tunes, he grunted again. Then they went on. IIRC there was one track on a 4 lp Playboy box I had in high school. Maybe that's what he was saying. Don't know of anything else from that gig. I think there was a Chet Baker track from that festival on the set too. Eddie's description of Hawk lines up with lots of other recollections - see Esmond Edward's story in the liners to the "On Broadway" disc.
  6. A bit off topic but tapes exist of the (first?) Playboy jazz festival in Chicago. 1959 I think. Hawkins in great form and a Rollins trio with Grimes and LaRoca IIRC. It has been a while so memory is foggy.
  7. You can have Chewie.
  8. Keith Spring Jamie Aebersold Duane Eddy
  9. Must be the Concord 3 disc box of the early Prestige stuff. It was announced a long time ago and delayed.
  10. You aren't fickle, you just need to broaden your horizon. There's a big, wonderful world passing you by. Bet you didn't even look at St Louis Jimmy or Tampa Red.
  11. You must have stuff from a later concert. No quartet performances at this one. I also think the Chicago concert was earlier than '86 - maybe '85 or even '84.
  12. First order (5530) 12th. Received shipment 21st. Second order (5779) 15th. Confirmation email gave ship date of the 19th but no tracking number yet.
  13. Great thread, thanks Lazaro for sharing these remembrances! Chuck, part of this tape is circulating (it was on radio, back then, I assume) - if you're talking of Chicago Jazz Festival 1986. Here's the line-up going with it: Tom Harrell - trumpet Don Sickler - trumpet Eddie Bert - trombone Steve Lacy - soprano sax Phil Woods - alto sax Charlie Rouse - tenor sax Howard Johnson - baritone sax, bass clarinet Barry Harris - piano Cecil McBee - bass Ben Riley - drums Yes I'm sure broadcast tapes are floating around. Barry Harris was NOT on piano. Mal was. In 1982 Mal and Steve performed as a duo at the same festival. It was broadcast too.
  14. I had been planning a concert like this while Monk was alive and after his death I could not continue. A couple years later Art Lange revived the idea and carried it off supurbly. Don Sickler, Tom Harrell, Cecil McBee and Eddie Bert were in the band too. I have a tape of the gig. They played Epistrophy, Bye-Ya, I Mean You, Evidence, Light Blue, Oska T and Four In One.
  15. Please list your Shepp, Ayler, Cecil, etc records.
  16. I spent the weekend "cleaning" our deck in prep for a new staining. I need 3-5 days to let the wood dry and it rained this morning. The weather outlook is now 30-60% rain for a few days. It was "all clear" when I started.
  17. Steve and Mal were two special people and I had the great opportunity to present them in concert once. I will never forget them or the music they made that night. Maybe Lazaro will chime in with the "advice for a life" Mal gave him.
  18. Danny Long Lanny Morgan Fanny Brice
  19. You need more.
  20. Completely different deal.
  21. Mostly abstract/reflective stuff. By "abstract" I do not mean "hard to listen to". At it's best it just friggin' sings. There was a huge gap between Reflections and the rest of the stuff.
  22. I have around 10 records with them together and want info about the others. They were sometimes "magical" in each others company.
  23. As long as we are "adjusting" the board, how about a "new posts" button at the bottom of threads. It's a pain scrolling to the top to do this.
  24. A very good friend asked why there wasn't a thread like this. Steve and Mal were a special combination and their recordings deserve discussion. Views from informed listeners are welcomed.
