  1. Thanks for posting stuff like this.
  2. Geez, I didn't know Wilbur Sweatman looked like THAT!

That might be the reason I never bought it. MA always seemed to be the "fall back" guy to hire for charts on a record date in the late '50s 'cause he'd deliver the goods on time. Always seemed "generic" to me. He may be a smart guy, but his name never made me buy a record and stopped me in a couple of cases.
  4. Seems that Louis Nye is about to get an earfull.
  5. I think Paul Harvey has a recommendation. B-)
  6. Correct. I don't remember the source but 30+ years ago I was told Clark Terry was a sub for the originally chosen Don Cherry.
  7. FINALLY!!! Been waiting for this one for a long, long time... Yes! Bechet's growl on It Don't Mean a Thing is one of the great moments in music.
  8. Yup, those are the ones.
  9. To my knowledge, ECM used 3 pressing plants in the US at different times. The earliest ones were crappy. Later they used both Columbia and Wakefield. There might be other variants, but this is what I remember. The later pressings were fine, with a nod to the Wakefields. If you are worried, stick with the European/Polydor pressed records.
  10. Has he stopped drowning kittens too?
  11. I stopped drowning kittens a few years ago and have resisted hazing new "merchants" lately. What's next?
  12. Sounds like a great evening. Thanks for sharing. Nothing like that around here tonight.
  13. No, when I was head of the fest committee and Monk was alive, I planned a Monk program to do this (with Monk in the audience - since he was not in emotional shape to play) but TM died as did my plans - didn't want to seem to be "cashing in". A few years later Art Lange took over the project and the band. He consulted with Don Sickler and put together a dandy outfit. The band included Rouse, Phil Woods, Eddie Bert, Steve Lacy, Ben Riley, etc. I'll have to back to the tapes to get all the names.
  14. After the catch, be sure to clean all the cheeze out of the stomach. If they are small enough deep frying is great. If they are larger you gotta get out the skillet. MMMMMMMMMMMMM. B-)
  15. I think they are simply incompetent on any number of levels. No reason to risk a cent.
  16. Sure I will forget a bunch but here goes - Ellington, Basie, Maynard, Herman, Kenton, Jacquet, Ra, Mulligan, Toshiko/Tabakin, Gil, George Russell, Hampton, AACM, Machito AND (bands we assembled for the Chicago fest) Benny Carter, Benny Goodman, Roy Eldridge, Earl Hines and a wonderful Monk BB with Mal Waldron on piano. Some of these I heard a number of times - Ellington around 20 times.
  17. If you want to be really greedy, go to the home page and copy the promo code for $1 off each cd.
  18. Runt owns Water along with a couple other labels. The link with BN is through Patrick Roques.
  19. I think he got the "award" for his work "on the scene" together with his "trust fund baby" friend John. AND I think he repaid the debt by further works.
  20. My current experience with the site is (using the above link) and (not logging in): It says 5.99 per disc, though I'm a 4.99 member and my "music queue" is correct AND the Miles box is listed at my (cheaper) price - 14.97. I don't need it, just wanted to check. Just a word to the wise.
  21. Geez, I though someone had discovered the rumored Albert Ayler/Julie Budd tapes.
  22. the confusion is the result of the original designations of these lps: 1512 A New Sound - A New Star 1514 The Champ 1525 At the Organ Vol 3 A curious choice since all + was/were issued in a 1997 double.
  23. The real answer is they don't think they can sell enough to make the time/money pay off. Real simple. It is a business when all is said and done.
