From the link above as I read it. it's still unclear as to whether or not it was suicide... Am I wrong about that? Damn it's sad to think that the person who used his stage to deliver such a message took his own life. RIP.

That's horrible... I grew up on that show... Damn.... RIP Don.

FA: The entire collection of Verve Elite CDs
tranemonk replied to vibes's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I put in a bid on that one.. Been looking for it for a while. Glad that I scored it when it was still available. Will have to listen again, soon! (I loves me some Konitz!) Glad that I have the Dickerson and the Konitz, among others. Nice series! -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

Tierney Sutton... up here in Boston @ Scullers... If you haven't heard her new record American Road... it is excellent... Her best to date. -
After my first listen I'm lukewarm. I've got a lot of Brubeck but this one didn't do much for me. How is this one?

Black Saint/Soul Note Box Sets
tranemonk replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm up for 3 out of the 4... Not much of a Guiffre fan.... I wonder when we'll get a US distributor? For some reason it seems to take months for a US distributor to get these releases..... -
I generally concur... He's got a new CD out on the Smallslive label... Good one! when i lived in nyc he was very open to giving lessons. he had a regular gig at Smoke and you could just walk up and ask him. he is, of course, very busy, but he seemed like a very personable fellow. you should ask him for lessons. my opinion: he's one of the best jazz guitar players alive. he's not necessarily an innovative game-changer on his instrument like, say, frisell, davis, metheny, hendrix, tyner, etc... but for straight-ahead jazz blues, in the pocket standards, "tasty" interpretations of great tunes, he's basically 2nd to none in my mind. amazing player w/ a BEAUTIFUL tone.

What Dave Douglas cd are you talking about when you say "Three Visions"? I'm a big DD fan and don't recall that title.

My dominant problem with Safari is it's lack of customization, specifically that you can't change the overall theme. I used to use Firefox a lot since there are so many themes and extensions but it's a memory hog. I've lately been using Chrome mostly...

Had a little extra cash this week so I grabbed the Stan Getz... I still think their pricing is a little high though..

His new record is outstanding...! I just found out he's coming to Cambridge in late Jan. I'm going to try to go. It's been at least 10 years since I've seen him!

Count Basie Verve Mosaic running low
tranemonk replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I prefer the Live Roulette sessions myself. Something about that band... And I concur that the sound quality is excellent. I have the Verve sessions which I'm a little lukewarm on. Didn't get the Studio Roulette sessions due to my not being familiar with Mosaic at that time... I wish I had.... -

I know it kinda sucks but I'm inclined to get for two reasons. A) I like Jim Hall and b) Their packaging is okay. I paid $40 for Maria Schneider's last release and it was worth it. I have to go back and listen to the individual CD I have to make a definitive decision. For some reason, Artist Share finds it necessary to sell the unreleased material at a clip of $25/cd, though.

My Apple story... When I was an undergrad in college (early-1980's) I remember going to the computer lab and working on this cool computer which had a interesting design. (This was way before Windows appeared.) I remember swapping 5 and 1/4" disks between drives to save the files. I liked Apple but didn't think much of it. Went to Windows 3.1 went it came out. I then learned how to tinker with both PC hardware and software. Flash forward 25 years later, I'm on a cross-country flight with a crappy Dell laptop (my university bought). The POS has like 15 bluescreens and doesn't last an hour on the plane. I come back and my (non-technical) wife says "Should I get an Ipod????" Hmmm... Okay, fine no big deal to me but I buy it for her on her birthday. One month later I get diagnosed as having thyroid cancer. (I'm now fine btw... no thyroid now, but no cancer.) Okay I say fuck it, I'm giving myself a big fat present and buy a MacBook Pro. I'm hooked now. I'm too old be a Apple fanboy and I have had issues with the friggin' Lion OS but I'm totally in the Apple world now. Got my Iphone 4 and am saving up for a loaded IMac. In essence what turned me back on to Apple is quite simple. Their products work 99% of the time. The 1% of the time they don't I can actually go my Apple store and talk to a PERSON (what a novel concept Microsoft and Dell!!!) and get it fixed. In addition to that, their products look cool! Being a cancer survivor who's not much younger than Jobs, I greatly appreciate what he (and others) have done and have tremendous sympathy for him and his family. I still think the "Think Different" marketing campaign was the greatest series of ads I've ever seen. RIP Steve.

This just sucks.

Happy B-Day Ken... thanks for all you do!

I'm in the middle of Disc 2.. and it's great but I have two questions.. Isn't Ron Carter's bass very hard to hear??? And how could they not even FIND a damn place for the liner notes????
-
How can you put together such a great musical package and totally F*** up the design so there's no place to put the liner notes???:angry: You can shake it, you can break it, you can hang it on the wall.
