I'm with you on the Parlan and the Hodges... Love Horace... Johnny's not working for me... i'll hold onto it... but it's not doing it now...

The Brookmeyer Select is a must-have (IMHO)... I was on the fence for A LONG time on this one... and am very glad I picked it up... Doesn't get a lot of talk on this site... but I suspect folks who got it... like it.... I'm with you on that one Lon. I'm looking for it to be here on Christmas morning. I haven't heard a lot about this set, but with Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff, Pee Wee, Ben Webster, how can you go wrong..... Reece, Brookmeyer, or Shank Select (fall or winter 06) Andrew Hill select in early spring 06. --of course, this could all change if the Parlan or Roach go on the 'last call' list ←

And WHY NOT???? Waiting for the version on caiman????

tranemonk replied to JSngry's topic in New Releases
nice review...I agree with most of it... But I REALLY liked "Amazing Grace..." (In general I LOVE that tune...) I missed my chance to see this at the Village Vanguard last fall... but the record is great.... Good, but short liner notes also... -

Where will be Mosaic be in 20 years?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I kinda feel like we (the fans/regular buyers) should encourage/help Mosaic do something unique for their 25th anniversary.... (only 3 years away).... Ideas???? 1. A Mosaic "Membership" club? ($xx per year and you get ???. We, of course, should be grandfathered in... say anyone who's bought at least 5 sets... [selects not included.]) 2. An all-star benefit concert/mini-tour (with 2 free tickets for the Mosaic old-timers [anyone who's bought 10-12 sets or more)??? Part of the proceeds go to the Jazz Foundation of America.... [Does anybody, other than me, remember when Verve did their little version of JATP about 10 years ago....??? It was REALLY cool!! Got to see Charlie Haden, Joe Henderson, James Carter, etc...) 3. First dibs on any sets "running low"/"last chance?" (Perhaps a select email list of Mosaic Old-timers and THOSE people get the 1st announcement with the website and general public finding out later...) 4. Any other ideas?????? I definitely think (and did email Mosaic) saying that they should begin offering their "hard-core base" something additional.... -
You may be able to find someone saying that on the Zapruder film....

since we're on the 22nd year of the company... and I'm sure they've done better than they could even dream... Where will this lead??? What will it/they be in 2025???? Which box sets will we be seeing??? I for one... suspect similar to the Leibman/Barach, Tolliver sets... they will start focusing more and more on unreleased live stuff.... (How about a live unreleased Stanley Turrentine set??? What do you think??? And I'm sure this thread will eventually get hijacked toward the inevitable "Best of.... Gomer Pyle/The REALLY Complete Bitches Brew thread again.... but in the inital phase of this thread, I am curious what you SERIOUSLY think will happen to the company????

What was your first Mosaic?
tranemonk replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Jackie McLean... and I would never get rid of Mosaics... -
Wow... if we can pull this off.. this may be a minor miracle.... Hmm..... Mine, too. They're showing the "regular price" now as $97.89. I think we got ourselves a DEAL! ←

Box Design sucks Miles/Trane Col. Compl.
tranemonk replied to Soul Stream's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm not entirely sure I get this rant... but... there's been a long discussion about the newer/cheaper (perhaps better for your purposes) longbox packaging... try here... http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=21167 and here.. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=9596 I have several Miles boxes and both the spine version and the longbox... I just recently donated my single Miles/Trane CDs and got the longbox because of very, very good prices.... If it's bugging you that much, return it and buy the longbox version... I got mine over here... less than $9 a CD.... http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?pa...&prod_id=712335 hope that helps... -
thanks!!!!

would someone be so kind to post the Count Basie Studio Roulette Recordings Discography??? (the CD Version) I have much of the session info but it's incomplete and I have no song titles... thanks.

If Mosaic Was A Man, What Would His First Name Be?
tranemonk replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Luigi.. why... I have no idea... just kinda came to my mind.... -
Have to say I cheated... I called them and begged to take my pre-order... I've actually called and placed an order for that ever elusive, found in a dead guy's closet, acetate Diz, Miles, Trane, Monk, McCoy, Lee Morgan, Oscar Peterson, Art Blakey jam session... I was even told there was only 2 left... (Never even made it to last chance... !!!! ) They're already taking preorders for those??? DAMN! I wonder if they'd take my preorder for that Quartet Out set they haven't even thought of yet? ←

I'm sure this has been covered before... and I know a little about the European vs. US vs. other countries (Spain) licensing issues but here's my story and question... A friend gave me the 4CD Proper Box... "Roy Eldridge - Little Jazz Trumpet Giant." Disc 4 is entitled "Dale's Wail." When the Mosaic box came out, I was tempted to order it and actually had ordered it before I looked carefully at the Proper Box and the Mosaic discography. Mosaic's set... two sessions (or so) comprise "Dale's Wal;" with the following from their website.. "(D) THE ROY ELDRIDGE QUINTET: Roy Eldridge (tp), Oscar Peterson (org), Barney Kessel (g), Ray Brown (b), Jo Jones (d). Fulton Studios, NYC, April 23, 1953 1222-1 Love For Sale Clef 89056 1223-5 Dale’s Wail - 1224-3 The Man I Love Clef (Au) CL011 (45) 1225-2 Oscar’s Arrangement - 1223-10 Dale’s Wail (alt) previously unissued 1223-12 Dale’s Wail (alt) previously unissued 1223-13 Dale’s Wail (alt) previously unissued Note: All issued titles on Clef EPC200, MGC150, MGC705, Verve MGV8089. Take 13 of Dale’s Wail was originally chosen as the master take, but take 5 was ultimately used for release. The alternate takes of Dale's Wail were recorded at the end of the session. _____________________________________________________________________________ (E) THE ROY ELDRIDGE QUINTET: Roy Eldridge (tp), Oscar Peterson (p), Herb Ellis (g), Ray Brown (b), Alvin Stoller (d). Radio Recorders, LA, December 10, 1953 1379-6 Willow Weep For Me Clef 89110 1380-2 Somebody Loves Me - 1381-1 When Your Lover Has Gone Clef 89123 1382-8 When It’s Sleepy Time Down South Clef 89116 1382-9 When It’s Sleepy Time Down South (alt) previously unissued 1383-1 Feeling A Draft 1384-2 Don’t Blame Me 1385-3 Echoes Of Harlem Clef 89116 1385-4 Echoes Of Harlem (10” LP master) 1386-3 I Can’t Get Started Clef 89123 Note: For 1384, discographies and Verve files list take –1, which is actually a false start, as the master. All titles (except 1382-9 & 1385-3) issued on Clef MGC162 All titles (except 1382-9 & 1385-4) issued on Clef MGC705, Verve MGV8089" When I found this out... I cancelled my Mosaic order... (since I hate having doubles and had concerns that there was more duplication than that one session.... ) I'm assuming that Mosaic has the "legitmate" rights to this? I'm also assuming that the Mosaic sound is way better than the Proper? How can this happen? Why doesn't Cuscuna go after these guys? Should I ditch the Proper box and get the Mosaic??? Why??? thanks... And how often does this happen? Am I the 1st one to notice this?
