I'm still hoping to find a not-too-expensive Freddie Slack Select. Fat chance, I guess

Billie Holiday Box Set on Verve
J.A.W. replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Is this a response to my crack about the Evans box? If so, I think you're putting me on, but I'll bite. The large size of the Mosaic boxes permits larger photographs in the booklets, and the black and white is beautiful. The best photos ever taken of jazz musicians are in black and white, especially of most of those to whom the big boxes are devoted. As for the Evans box, nasty to open, hard to get the discs out, liners impossible to read. I long ago repackaged the cds in "boring jewel cases" and threw the box in a box...to rust away. I think most would agree that it represents the nadir of "high concept" packaging for reissues. gregmo Well put. I also like the Mosaic design very much, with their beautiful photographs; black and white just catches the atmosphere perfectly. -
As I said in my last post, the "Amazon CD" is on the American Jazz Classics label, while the Fresh Sound CD is on, well, Fresh Sound. Different editions indeed.
-
The first title on the Brookmeyer CD was a 1959 Atlantic album, the second title a 1960 Mercury album; both were done with larger groups. According to the Fresh Sound site the Stitt CD only has the 1959 Verve album Sonny Stitt Plays Jimmy Giuffre Arrangements (10 tracks). No, seems they just didn't post the complete tracklist (as on amazon, see Cliff's link), but the line-ups give more: These look interesting! I didn't even have any idea that Stitt ever played with Giuffre! A rather unlikely pairing, but then Stitt was a gun for hire... The Fresh Sound site only lists personnel for 10 tracks; where do you see more, apart from what's on Amazon (known to be quite unreliable at times). (edit) I just noticed that the CD listed on Amazon is on the "American Jazz Classics" label, while the one on the Fresh Sound site is on Fresh Sound. They both have the same cover, though.

New Soul Station XRCD Blue Note - out now. Sounds great!
J.A.W. replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
Well that's just petty. There's just no need for such a personality cult, a bit of humility goes a long way... I quoted Kevin's post in PM conversations about the Blue Note SACDs I had with a few other SH Forum members and some of them wouldn't believe me: "why would Steve lie about it, and why should I believe that quote?" One of them even said that he wouldn't believe me because I'm in the Netherlands whereas Hoffman resides in LA, with contacts in the music biz... Enough said -
This set is definitely worth it.

Hm, it seems to me that bashing other fora is still a popular sport here, be it AAJ or the Hoffman site - and yes, I am also guilty as hell Although I've done my share of bashing those fora here, on second thoughts I don't really see the point; just don't go there if they annoy you so much. What's the use of moaning about them here? It'll lead to nothing but useless discussions and it'll change nothing...

As I said elsewhere on this forum, the Hoffman forum is not a more or less independent site where everyone can say (within reason) what they like; its main purpose is to promote Hoffman's interests in the music biz, and to protect his interests the moderators have set up an extensive and extremely strict book of rules. I think the moderation and some of the rules over there are over the top and I have told them so a few times - not that it made any difference, of course. Other things I don't like over there (to put it mildly) are the number of stupid and silly threads and posts and the extreme idolatry and sycophancy; it's not the exclusive domain of the Hoffman site, of course, but I find it sickening. Nowadays I only go there for info on music I'm interested in.

I agree that the sound on the "Jazz Tribune" sets is far from perfect, on the contrary, but I prefer them to the Complete RCA Victor Recordings box, which has audible noise reduction artefacts. I sold the box a long time ago; maybe I should buy it again and do some more comparisons

LF: Tristano Marsh Konitz Mosaic box (affordable)
J.A.W. replied to AmirBagachelles's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Manhattan Studio? Now also OOP. It's available locally in the US on Jazz Records (JR11CD), the label started by LT himself and continued by his family. It has a powerful and relatively unknown catalogue. http://www.jazzrecordsinc.com/2catalog.html Q Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, they don't sell directly and the Tristano CD is not currently available from Cadence, the store they link to. It's listed at Cadence ...I just saw it, and if it's listed, it should be available (or Cadence isn't what it used to be ... ) Click on North Country Distribution (Cadence) through the Jazz Records *Order Page*, enter *Lennie Tristano* where it says "Click here for our main search and order pages". Most of the Tristano on the Jazz Records label is there, including JR11. Q I did not say that it isn't listed at Cadence; it is and if you had looked carefully, you would have seen that it's marked "temporarily out of stock", which means that it's "not currently available from Cadence" as I posted above. -

Manhattan Studio? The LP seems to be available, with its original title but on a different label. -

The drummer was Tom Weyburn. -
They contain some nice stuff, but unfortunately also a lot of dross. There were four boxes, but the last one, Move Over Darling, which covered the 1960s, is OOP.

Mosaic's Scott Wenzel told me they had just 1 copy available, which is now gone.

Upcoming 4CD Set - Nat Cole Radio Transcriptions
J.A.W. replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I think it's mostly for completists, but your mileage may vary. -
I just found a few details on Amazon - the 2001 set uses the masterings of the earlier box for most songs, but a few songs were remastered in 2001, so there are a few differences if the info on Amazon is correct.

The fact that this is not the Hoffman forum doesn't mean that sound quality can't be discussed. That forum's got nothing to do with this discussion here. As with reverb, you can't remove noise reduction artefacts that are "on the disc", whatever system you have. Not to beat a dead horse, but I didn't say that I could remove NR artifacts. It's just that my speakers are not of a conventional front-firing only design, and their presentation allows this material to sound better to me than the material with added reverb. I can make changes too to the tonal balance that helps "enliven" the sound. I've learned to covet this flexibility; it makes me less a prisoner of a cd's sonic signature. Captain Wrong, my apologies if I've contributed to the thread going astray. I don't think there's a difference between the two editions of this set, and I think the price is okay, and the music is great. As I said, to each their own. By the way, I know "artifact" is the spelling many Americans use, but the original spelling is "artefact", from the ablative "arte" of the Latin noun "ars" (= art). As for this thread going off-topic, I also apologize, but it's not the first time it happens on this forum and most of the time people don't seem to mind Finally, I also agree that the music is great and that's always the main thing.

I didn't say that the Jazz Tribune sets were perfect; they're not, far from it, but I really hate those noise reduction artefacts on the 4CD-set - that's something I don't want to hear. To each their own. Not necessarily - see the links I posted earlier; not all of them are expensive from private Amazon sellers.
