  1. I had the 5 Columbia 2LP-sets that Chris produced back in my LP days and they did indeed sound great. Imagine my disappointment and disgust when I first heard the 2CD-sets with their horrendous sound that Columbia put out in the early 1990s. I'm glad to hear Chris had nothing to do with those.
  2. I said earlier that there are 9 Bessie Smith Frog CDs; my mistake, there are 8.
  3. I had that box and the sound on the Frogs was superior. The late John R.T. Davies did a really amazing job with those Frogs. It was one of Davies' last projects before he died.
  4. See also this thread on the Hoffman board: http://forums.steveh...oncerts.302153/ The store linked to in the first post told me it is scheduled for release in the Netherlands on or around December 13. I heard the concert with Coltrane on Dutch radio years ago. The music is brilliant, with Coltrane in top form, like on the Dragon Stockholm release.
  5. It's taken from radio broadcasts. The release is licensed and totally legit. Not true. It is licensed by Dutch radio, who own the tapes, so it is legit.
  6. Just in case someone was wondering about it: that Night Train set was legit. I don't think it's that bad - apart from the error, of course.
  7. Posting links to bootlegs is still against forum rules.
  8. Why is getting the Frogs quite a nuisance? You can order them directly on their site: http://www.frog-reco...collections/all Just click on the Bessie Smith covers (there are 9) and proceed from there. They accept Visa and PayPal. In my experience current owner Paul Swinton is a nice guy and easy to deal with.
  9. You guys don't know what you're missing - and no, I'm in no way connected with Frog
  10. Sorry, but the Frogs really are the ones to get; Bessie never sounded better on CD, no contest. I don't know if you're into vinyl, but the old Columbia 2LP-sets (produced by Chris Albertson) are fine. No idea if those are still easy to get and how expensive they are, though.
  11. Yep, the licensing deal was cancelled by the Ray Charles Estate soon after the set was released.
  12. Darcy is an excellent seller. His stuff is great but indeed expensive. Yasujiro is even more expensive but I'm not sure he's even selling anymore, he hasn't posted sale ads on the Hoffman board in ages.
  13. A fine label.
  14. The best tracks are masterpieces, the mediocre tracks are excellent, and the worst tracks are pretty damn good. Excellent description.
  15. Sad to hear this. Great drummer.
  16. Sorry to hear this.
  17. Already being discussed here:
  18. I signed up. I don't speak German. Is there anything I should know about the amazon.de page? I assume that like the Amazon UK page it automatically gets your address and credit card information from the main amazon.com databank. Yep, it's all interconnected, with the exception of Amazon Japan.
  19. Oops, forgot about the earlier thread. Moderators, please lock this thread.
  20. The Earl Hines set is now up for pre-order: http://www.mosaicrec...umber=254-MD-CD It'll be #254.
  21. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=254-MD-CD
  22. The DVD that came with Vol.1 in Europe was region-free, so I guess this one is too.
  23. Only 23 euro (including VAT for EU countries only) from Amazon Germany: http://www.amazon.de...x_ya_os_product
  24. My system can handle recordings of every kind (Mark Levinson electronics and Quad electrostatic speakers). Having read your comments I'm looking forward to getting the Yates next month.
