  1. Its not like this music isn't available in a plethora of other formats.
  2. Hm. That is a fundamental divide that I had never really put my finger on. Kind of like: "There are two types of people in the world..." It works in this example, actually. I think you might have nailed something that I had never boiled down. There are two types of trapset players.
  3. p.s. I have a nice backyard. I'll take pictures this spring. Y'all can decide where you'd like to set up.
  4. Tomorrow night: David Grisman and some friends (Old School Freight Train) are going to be doing some picking here. Sunday: Califone in Arlington, or Alexandria... I don't know. Can't wait! Tuesday: Califone in Chapel Hill... Carrboro, but whatever. Benevetto Russo was here last weekend. When is Organissimo going to bring it to the beach?!!!
  5. Another day, to try again. Life is good.
  6. Huh. I bought a used copy of 'Larks' last month, having never heard much of King Crimson ever. I really like the vocal tracks moreso than the instrumentals. I thought I'd like the instrumentals more! I do like the dynamic range of the recording though. Seems like a nice recording. I do remember hearing a crushing instrumental in a soundtrack once. Can't remember if it was a Guy Ritchie movie or what. Was Asia a cheesy band like Europe? That is the impression I get. Can't say I've ever heard them though.

    RVGs

Same here...I still have one original LP BLP1528 but never could buy VOL.1 and 2 on CD even in Japan. Do you have any idea of what drives OOP albums into the RVG edition, by the way..? I found a copy of Vol. 2 on CD in a used record store a couple of years ago for $6.99. I love this music! So much more raw and powerful than a lot of other Jimmy Smith I have on the shelf. Especially Thornell Shwartz's tone. I'd love to hear Vol. 1.
  8. imagine what the 'we are the world' collab would look like today. we know what it would sound like, but imagine all the kooks from people magazine in one room with headphones all singing in a different key. jimminy christmas. gee-min-ee. cripes. ho boy. hopefully madonna and kiedis would exchange a four or two, you know, for nostalgia.
  9. is it as good as it smells?
  10. I was thinking more along the lines of Amon Tobin
  11. I've heard Live In Tokyo and wasn't too psyched. I guess I'm more a fan of "Anthony" Williams...
  12. Roo, I thought you'd especially appreciate the Radiohead cover. Whaddaya think? Good footage of London graffiti as well, featuring some Banksy, among others.
  13. I've been thinking about Tony Scott a lot lately, especially after reading your posts about him sometime within the last year or so. Is there a particular release you have in mind? How's about a link through the org.org purchase function?
  14. Here's a good cover. Excellent footage as well. Just, featuring the Dap horns. All arrangemenst by Mark Ronson
  15. That was awful. That show was awful. Forgive me for not having cable until the mid-90s, but what the hell was KIDS Incorporated? Because there is an awful lot of awful stuff on YouTube from that show. Some of it just crappy, but some of it downright frightening, like this clip: Good thing I didn't see that as a kid. No wonder so many people are afraid of clowns.
  16. The first one was a kid. He didn't know what he was doing. He can be forgiven... something about show choir ANYTHING just pisses me off. Those people HAVE to know how corny they are. No way anyone is that clueless. Makes me think I hate people.
  17. Warburton covers that "beat" (no drums) often. Paris Trans
  18. It wouldn't be difficult to create a brush in Photoshop to replicate ringwear...
  19. Nope. Drums...
  20. oh Vint. I just keep scrolling back up to look at that image. that is too much. as my mom would type, "lol".
  21. I may be mistaken, Lon, so forgive me. I don't understand how you can 'up-convert' an mp3 into a lossless format. Isn't it impossible to restore any information that has already been compressed from the file? In other words, once an aiff, or wav has been compressed into an mp3, it can be compressed further (more lossy), but it can never be improved upon.\ Am I wrong?
  22. Find this: Klook-mop with some of the avant-garde of the percussive avant-garde.
  23. Of all the Pharoah Sanders recordings I own, many listed above, over the past few years I've found myself going straight to "Spirits" released on Meta five or six years ago. I think it has to do, mostly in part, to the presence (and a huge presence it is) of Adam Rudolph, but Pharaoh's playing is inspired throughout most of the performance. How could it not be... The other is also on Meta, called "Twelve Arrows". Performed with a dancer, I'm afraid we don't get the full impact of the piece, but the music can be damned good.
  24. i'm with soulstream here. i would much rather read his take, or alfredson's take, on big john or baby face. if i'm reading about either of them, i am looking for information. real information. and key elements of each musician's personality to listen for. yes, i value many of the board members opinions, based on actual, in-depth discussion. opinion does account for something, but... if i'm trying to find out if i'm going to like the music or not, i'll listen to an online sample, or better yet, download a full track from emusic.com for a fraction of a dollar. whatever you think of the qualities of mp3, i'd reconsider their value. a song is worth a thousand words.
