Don Byas Mosaic set available for pre-order
romualdo replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
mine was in memphis & now leaving Honolulu -
reviving this absolutely fascinating almost twenty year old thread - I was following up on Julius Wechter & his Jazz West release then started looking more into the label (have most of the output) & finding the two Jane Fielding JW LPs and this dormant thread - time to kick it off again. I've had the Calliope/Stars of Jazz tracks for a few years but this material on Jazz West was new to me. The most recent post was almost 10 years ago & doesn't mention the Fresh Sound CD (was actually released in 2012) that contains both LPs & the two Stars of Jazz tracks. https://www.freshsoundrecords.com/jane-fielding-albums/5751-embers-glow-jazz-trio-for-voice-piano-and-string-bass-2-lps-on-1-cd-bonus-tracks.html also check this Mark Myers article from 2015 - he made contact with Jane's daughter (Jane passed round 2000) https://www.allaboutjazz.com/news/who-was-jane-fielding/

Fresh Sound have just released a further PJJ Birdland session but this time with a different sextet, including Bill Barron. Unfortunately (for me) they've saddled it with a previously released Atlantic session (with the same lineup, recorded 10 months apart) "Philly Joe's Beat" (AFAIK It's only ever had Japanese CD releases). The Birdland session is short ie just over 28 mins. https://www.freshsoundrecords.com/philly-joe-jones-albums/57144-philly-joe-s-beat-a-1961-unreleased-performance-at-birdland-featuring-mike-downs-on-trumpet.html Thanks for the tip James Accardi - only found out today Total time: 65:31 min. ALBUM DETAILS Sources: Tracks #1-7, originally issued as "Philly Joe's Beat" (Atlantic SD-1340) Tracks #8-12, are from an unreleased radio broadcast live at Birdland Personnel: Mike Downs, cornet; Bill Barron, tenor sax; Walter Davis Jr., piano; Paul Chambers, bass; Spansky DeBrest, bass on #8-12; Philly Joe Jones, drums. Recorded in New York City, May 20, 1960 [#1-7] and March 18, 1961 [#8-12] Total time: 65:31 min. 01. Salt Peanuts (Gillespie-Clarke) 6:17 02. Muse Rapture (John Hines) 6:04 03. Dear Old Stockholm (Traditional) 5:37 04. Two Bass Hit (Gillespie-Lewis) 4:37 05. Lori (Jimmy Garrison) 5:26 06. Got To Take Another Chance (Philly Joe Jones) 4:08 07. That’s Earl Brother (Gillespie-Brown-Fuller) 5:08 08. Two Bass Hit (Gillespie-Lewis) 6:14 09. Max Is Making Wax (Oscar Pettiford) 5:13 10. Bebe (Philly Joe Jones) 6:16 11. Salt Peanuts (Gillespie-Clarke) 7:02 12. The Theme (Blue ‘n’ Boogie) (Dizzy Gillespie) 3:50

RIP Shane loved this band - saw them twice here in Brisbane during the 80s I'd been a fan of the Irish folk/folk rock bands mainly from the 70s ie Planxty, Clannad, The Bothy Band etc so this was the next logical step The Pogues were a breath of fresh air with their "punk" ethos & Shane's lyrical artistry Sold their LPs years ago but have kept all of their 7" singles

Thanks, will pick up the CD version once it's released

Don Byas Mosaic set available for pre-order

set on the way to Australia - coming via Fedex!!! scheduled delivery date Dec 14 - what a shock. I definitely wasn't expecting it before christmas based on my previous Ascendia mishaps. -
The Incarnations LP is up on Discogs https://www.discogs.com/release/29009986-Charles-Mingus-Incarnations 4 of the 5 tracks match with previous releases (Mosaic box & individual CDs) "All The Things You Are...." (All) runs at 04:51 whereas the Mosaic version runs at 08:33 - has it been edited for the LP release or is it another take/version? Why are Hammerstein/Kern given composer credits - based on this it may be the actual original composition rather than "All The Things You Could Be Now...." If so, it would then be a new previously unreleased track. The original LP credits to Charles Mingus Presents (and the Candid Mosaic) have Mingus as the composer to "All The Things You Could Be Now..." So, what's with the Hammerstein/Kern credit suddenly appearing on this LP - this could support that it's a new track. Someone is going to have to listen to the track & compare

For British Jazz fans
romualdo replied to Roger Farbey's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Agreed regarding the text construction - has a scattered feel The Osborne CD was "Shapes" (with Surman, Skidmore, Moholo, Miller & Freeman) & came in a plastic sleeve -

I've had a copy of John Wickes "Innovations In British Jazz, Volume 1: 1960-1980" since 2000 (came with a Mike Osborne CD) - it probably covers music of the same period/material - much more info (325 pages) & lighter on the pics - definitely not a coffee table book - essential reference text for me May give this newbie a miss due to the crappy australian exchange rate & astronomical shipping costs to here -
wonderful interview - thoroughly absorbing thanks rostasi

Don Byas Mosaic set available for pre-order
romualdo replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
same here to my surprise plus my CC charge is pending (up on my account) -
Just listened to that track & you're correct - it does sound like booing & the clapping is sparse when compared to the other live titles. Why?? was Dolphy's soloing too avant for the crowd
-
same here, back in 1993 Yes, there was an extra insert page for the CD version plus the extra two titles not on vinyl
-
I think you may be referring to the two extra tracks added to the Mosaic CD version ie alts of Body & Soul Plus Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams (The original Mosaic Candid LP box omitted these). The Mosaic CD version appears to have all of the tracks on the individual Candid CD releases AFAIK - omits some Newport Rebels & Candid Dolphy tracks that don't include Mingus. The more recent Candid/Solid Japanese CD included the 45 edited versions of Folk Forms #1 & Original Faubus Fables.

IIRC I think it was mentioned that this "first" non subscription release would be reissued after the whole series was completed I havn't heard anything from them but admittedly I told them to hold off (was given option via email) until a bundle was available (at least 6) -

Miles graphic novel
romualdo replied to jazzbo's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The artwork/design & the storyline - working around events (real & previously documented) in the musicians life BTW, I'm not a comic afficonado -
definitely on my hit list - have previously got the NYA4 box plus the two Cecil Taylor doubles from Triple Point. Still considering the Lowe double. These items would normally be well out of my price range but they made themselves accessible when I unexpectedly came into some $$

Nice detective work there - so It's likely that Signature 15005 & 15006 were not released & as you postulate, the music (4 tracks) from this session may be lost -

I'd say you're on the right track here - it appears that all 4 titles from that Signature session havn't been released - check the link below https://www.45worlds.com/78rpm/record/nc991730us Your mention of that Cole tune made me laugh - I remember first hearing it on the Cole Mosaic box in the mid 90s - I used to sing along with it to my children who got a buzz out if it & used to join in too
