  1. Davis, George - Scapula: Bop Acetates, Chicago, 1949 SKU CvsD CD014 "Saxophonist George Davis is an enigmatic figure in postwar jazz. He’s best known for leading the band in which Jackie & Roy met – young singer Jackie Cain encountered pianist Roy Krall in the mid-1940s, playing together under Davis in a club on the south side of Chicago called Jump Town. They cut two 78-rpm records for Aristocrat as the George Davis Quartet; these sides followed Davis into obscurity. In 1948/49, Jackie & Roy went on to work with Charlie Ventura. At the same time, Davis cut a very unusual set of acetates with an unidentified band (bass, drums, piano, trumpet, guitar, Davis on alto and tenor sax), playing some standards and a selection of compositions identified as original but which turn out to have been pilfered from the Fats Navarro songbook. The unique 78-rpm records, which were rediscovered in a record shop in Chicago a few years ago, had not been previously issued. Awkwardly announced by Davis, who pretends that there is an audience though it is clear that they’re being waxed in solitude, these privately recorded bop and r&b tracks are pure Chicago jazz, hot, swinging, and bristling with attitude. Another lovely missive from the dustbin of music history." 2. John wasn't that forthcoming with details - it's a bit sketchy now - maybe it was estate related - I met so many interesting people (jazz wise) in Chicago & NYC things are a bit of a blur Anyway, he still has copies - I suppose if you go in there & buy a few CDs he may give you one
  3. On my recent trip to the states (September) I dropped in to Dusty Grove & Corbett vs Dempsey (located next to & above DG). I met John Corbett & also grabbed a stash of recent releases including Hats (Billy Bang, Jimmy Lyons, Phillip Wilson, Lacy/Potts - Tips) plus the unreleased Hat session Nuclear Family (McPhee & Jaume) & Wadada Leo Smith, Brotz/Van Hove/Bennink 1971. The bonus item (actually on my wants list) was the wonderful/quirky George Davis "Scapula" - Bop acetates, Chicago 1949 - John gave me a copy as due to contractual issues it had to be withdrawn (not listed on website anymore) & can't be sold. He mentioned the upcoming Willisau & Ra releases but didn't have hard copy at the time. Will order through Dusty Groove.
  4. one for me too!!
  5. Any jazz recommendations for SF (concerts, festivals, clubs etc) - checked SFJAZZ I've sorted out NYC & Chicago so just the West Coast left Anything like The Stone (NYC) in SF?
  6. RIP Holger Can were a major part of my musical life through the 70s plus I also followed their solo efforts what a loss with Jaki earlier this year, Michael in 2001 & Rebop in 1983
  7. No, just speculation - who would have thought that someone (Membran) would do a Charlie Parker Records Box
  8. Good news for Australia - it's been available via Netflix Australia since late July
  9. The Spanish (or Andorrans) will eventually (or probably) do a CD box set of these LPs plus other sessions from the KABC Stars of Jazz series that didn't make it to Calliope. Fresh Sounds et al have previously released some of these sessions (non Calliope releases) on CD.
  10. some nice stuff there too - will keep looking Thanks again Chuck
  11. Wow!! nice lineup - Amina Claudine Myers, Andrew Cyrille, Oliver Lake, Robin Kelley lecture on Monk @ 100 We won't be getting in to Chicago till Sun pm - unfortunately will miss most of the performances
  12. Thanks again Chuck - The Constellation looks like a good venue
  13. Thanks for the details & info re Niemack/Konitz at Kitanos I've booked Kitanos (Sat 23) plus Harris (Vanguard), Coltrane Tribute (Birdland) - only Bloom, Halvorson & Fujiwara to sort out Tim Berne & Snake Oil would have been a goer but he's only on for one night & that's when get into NYC (13th pm)
  14. what a bummer!! - I'm going to be in Chicago (from Australia) from 24-27th Sept - missed out by three weeks Chuck, can you recommend anything jazz wise (I'm partial to avant/free/improv) over that time period (not a big time frame) in Chicago Will be checking out the Green Mill Is it worth going to The Velvet Lounge?
  15. I'll be in NYC from Sept 13th to 24th & aim to do a number of the jazz venues So far I've found (been very lucky IMHO - some great stuff & I've struck gold with Mary Halvorson - really wanted to see her) & will be booking in the next day or so Barry Harris - Village Vanguard (19th-24th) - Wow!! - one of the masters Jane Ira Bloom plus - The Stone (15th) Mary Halvorson / Sylvie Courvoisier - The Owl (Brooklyn)(21st) Tomas Fujiwara Double trio (includes Mary Halvorson) - The Jazz Gallery (22nd) Lee Konitz & Dan Tepfer appear to be playing on Sept 15 (only one night) at the Jazz Gallery but I can't seem to be able to link to the tickets - maybe it's sold out? I've sent the JG an email Coltrane Revisited (Eric Alexander, Jaleel Shaw, Steve Kuhn, Lonnie Plaxico, Steve Smith) - Birdland (19th-23rd) Would have loved to see McCoy Tyner at the Blue Note but he's only playing on the 11th (one day only & two days before we get there) bummer!! I'm also going to drop in at the National Jazz Museum (Harlem) to have a peek/listen maybe at/to the Savory Collection Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated
  16. Perfect timing!! will be able to get this with my yearly Emanem order - also a new Paul Rutherford release "In Backward Times, 1979-2007". I'm surprised I didn't get an Emanem email of upcoming releases - maybe it's yet to come
  17. Cheers for posting the link - what an erudite person he was. Fishing (I knew about) but not the weightlifting. Favourite author was Edgar Alan Poe. Interview was recorded in 65 (during the Stockholm Jazz Festival) & he moved to Europe in 46 - his accent over the 20 years had developed into a very continental one. Fascinating 20 minutes of Don Carlos. Love his music!!
  18. Green with envy - have been a fan since the early 70's - BTW AFAIK they have never come to Australia Just bought the Larks' Tongues In Aspic 13CD/DVD & Blue Ray set - my favourite period with Jamie Muir check this 2016 version of "Starless" - probably the same lineup as you saw, Ed
  19. BTW, this is a wonderful set - great score for whoever landed it!!
  20. I didn't know ED was regarded/popular within the skateboarding community both of my sons (23 & 25) are both Eric Dolphy fans, the younger involved in skateboard culture & hipped me to ED skateboard decks check this set of 5 skateboard decks made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of "Out To Lunch" https://shopwesternedition.com/products/out-to-lunch-series

    Mary Halvorson

Yep, I had realised that my stay in NYC will not coincide with Mary's dates - real bummer missing her by such a small window. I definitely have the Stone on my itinerary - will see someone there. Going to try as many as possible jazz venues but my preference is more avant if possible.
  22. Downloaded it last night. Doug Pomeroy has done an excellent transfer job. Theme is Honeysuckle Rose played (& sung) by a variety of lineups. Standout material is the John Kirby Sextet - 10 tracks, radio broadcasts, mostly from 1940 - they sound so ahead of their time, a great rendition of Boogie Woogie Stomp by Albert Ammons (with unknown drummer) at Cafe Society (Dec 39) Also, WNEW Radio Jam session with Waller, Teagardens (Charlie & Jack), Pee Wee Russell, Condon, Shapiro & Singleton (5 tracks), Roy Eldridge & Chick Webb with radio orchestra (1938 - 2 tracks, one without Webb), Benny Carter Orchestra live Savoy Ballroom (11/39, 2 tracks), then finally closing with The Joe Sullivan Sextet (same date & location as Ammons)
