How John Peel created our musical world
romualdo replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Popular music needed a giant enema by the mid 70's (bloated prog rock & disco etc) & the response was punk - some of it I didn't like but generally it was energetic & great to listen to - Peel understood this. Also, the economic changes seen in the UK during the 70's i.e. Thatcherism added fuel to the fire. As with any new trend punk rapidly became commodified/commercialised. Many people from the British Pub Rock Scene of the early to mid 70's (proto punk) - Brinsley Schwartz, Drury, Costello, Graham Parker caught onto the coat-tails of this new movement - Peel championed many of these bands - he could see what was happening. I remember Robert Fripp talking about "small units" in the mid seventies as Crimso were dissolving, referring to compact groups. He was also aware of the changes that were occurring within the music scene. I like his late 70's LP's - Exposure, League of Gentlemen etc The "Jazz" element seems peripheral wrt Peel - I know he was a big fan of the Soft Machine (esp the earlier material with Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt - this was more anarchic & humorous than the later "jazzier" stuff). I've only got the first 4 Softs albums - I actually don't warm to the later post Wyatt material. I have always been on the same page as Peel - looking forward to reading this (after I finish the new Simon Spillett Tubby Hayes text - great read BTW) -
this was my first exposure to Spedding in 1975 followed by the two Vertigo Nucleus LP's (what a contrast) - couldn't work out whether he was taking the piss with this single - still I have a soft spot for this - the bike he is riding (BMW 75/5) in the film clip is my current motorcycle

just looked at the hoffman site - the 18CD set contains lots of breakdowns & incomplete takes the way the aussie dollar is at present, the set will cost over $1000 i.e. $55 per disc Maybe good for a library or archival situation but how many times would you listen to this material - the 6CD set seems ideal to me

Are there any box bargains currently available?
romualdo replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Is there a source for your info? I cannot find any listing of the contents of this box? No. But partly yes: the box's title ... content should thus be pretty clear. With the only question being if those stray cuts released on other albums/compilations ("Misterioso" was yet another, and that two LP set from the seventies, "Always Know") will be added or not. Regarding remasterings I don't know, but with such cheap-ish reissues I'd not expect them to remaster anything they previously reissued. I would like to know specifics about that, too (Lon, if you have some to offer, please step up! I'm not doubting your insight at all, I just wonder if for instance "Let My Children Hear Music" was remastered; to my best knowledge, the Bessie Smith box was not when it should have; and I wonder if "Big Band and Quartet in Concert" might be ...) I'd like to see the unreleased Brandeis University (65) & Mexico (67) material - some of this has had Columbia releases -
Currently listening to the Dial Mosaic box & have noticed that the discography lists Arvin Garrison in The Gillespie/Tempo Jazzmen (Feb 6) All previous discographies (I've seen) omit him - he was definitely present (audible & actually solos) on the previous day's aborted session (with Parker) I've listened to all of the titles from the Feb 6 session & can't hear a guitar - looks like the Mosaic booklet is in error - the discography also dates the second session as Feb 5 while in the notes (p 8) Feb 6 is listed.

Art Ensemble "live in Paris" (is it actually Paris?)
romualdo replied to romualdo's topic in Discography
Cheers Chuck Also, Clifford, the above video of the 1970 concert mentions Fontella in the introductory dialogue (plus the quintet) -
I'm wondering if the so called Paris concert (originally released by BYG Japan in 1974) is actually the 1970 "Chateauvallon" concert (Aug 13) The Lord Discography lists it so (with quintet - Moye added) while the liner notes to the Charly CD lists the date as October 5, 1969 (quartet) Any AEC buffs able to clear this up for me?

The very first batch of US RVG's (1999 I think, not sure how many, I'm not at home at present) came in cardboard slipcases - not sure how many had the covers (probably the first run of the first issue) - above is the slipcase cover

The Blake & Mitchell sets are the most appealing to me Duplication between sets is starting to bug me - the Roach set has Birth & Rebirth plus Historic Concerts -> both of these are in the Braxton & Taylor sets respectively - why did they only release 6 LPs in the Roach set - he has 11 Soul Notes (or maybe more) - maybe they'l do a second box? The Mitchell set also has overlaps (Abrams & Lewis)

Has the bottom fallen out of the Mosaic market?
romualdo replied to Dmitry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I suppose my best recent Mosaic buy was the Columbia Piano Moods 7CD set (complete with box & booklet) bought locally here in Brisbane for Aus $24.99 9.99 is truly a bargain for the Thad Jones set!! I managed to score the complete Quebec/Hardee set in Sydney in the late 90's for about $30, vinyl though so had to digitalise it Mosaics tend to go cheap here in Australia - many of the shops don't really know what they are I was in Western Australia earlier this year & I found a mint Johnny Mercer Mosaic Select for $15 - I actually offered to give the shop owner $20 -
The Herman Foster "Have You Heard" session is being released on CD later this year (October) in Japan - part of the Sony reissue series http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/products?term.media_format=&q=herman+foster

lets try again - hopefully I can remember how I worded this (was deleted with the upgrade attempt) been listening to "Sweet Honey Bee" It sounds soooo good! - much improved on the US RVG I've been replacing my pre RVG BN CD's (or ones I didn't already have) with their SHM equivalents but generally holding onto my US RVG's (though have got the SHM Monks, Jackson, Davis, Brown, Johnson & releases that contain extra unreleased material) Any advice or consensus on what SHM's sound significantly better than their RVG (US) counterparts - have gone through the last 39 frames & have some ideas
