  1. Thanks again Chuck - The Constellation looks like a good venue
  2. Thanks for the details & info re Niemack/Konitz at Kitanos I've booked Kitanos (Sat 23) plus Harris (Vanguard), Coltrane Tribute (Birdland) - only Bloom, Halvorson & Fujiwara to sort out Tim Berne & Snake Oil would have been a goer but he's only on for one night & that's when get into NYC (13th pm)
  3. what a bummer!! - I'm going to be in Chicago (from Australia) from 24-27th Sept - missed out by three weeks Chuck, can you recommend anything jazz wise (I'm partial to avant/free/improv) over that time period (not a big time frame) in Chicago Will be checking out the Green Mill Is it worth going to The Velvet Lounge?
  4. I'll be in NYC from Sept 13th to 24th & aim to do a number of the jazz venues So far I've found (been very lucky IMHO - some great stuff & I've struck gold with Mary Halvorson - really wanted to see her) & will be booking in the next day or so Barry Harris - Village Vanguard (19th-24th) - Wow!! - one of the masters Jane Ira Bloom plus - The Stone (15th) Mary Halvorson / Sylvie Courvoisier - The Owl (Brooklyn)(21st) Tomas Fujiwara Double trio (includes Mary Halvorson) - The Jazz Gallery (22nd) Lee Konitz & Dan Tepfer appear to be playing on Sept 15 (only one night) at the Jazz Gallery but I can't seem to be able to link to the tickets - maybe it's sold out? I've sent the JG an email Coltrane Revisited (Eric Alexander, Jaleel Shaw, Steve Kuhn, Lonnie Plaxico, Steve Smith) - Birdland (19th-23rd) Would have loved to see McCoy Tyner at the Blue Note but he's only playing on the 11th (one day only & two days before we get there) bummer!! I'm also going to drop in at the National Jazz Museum (Harlem) to have a peek/listen maybe at/to the Savory Collection Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated
  5. Perfect timing!! will be able to get this with my yearly Emanem order - also a new Paul Rutherford release "In Backward Times, 1979-2007". I'm surprised I didn't get an Emanem email of upcoming releases - maybe it's yet to come
  6. Cheers for posting the link - what an erudite person he was. Fishing (I knew about) but not the weightlifting. Favourite author was Edgar Alan Poe. Interview was recorded in 65 (during the Stockholm Jazz Festival) & he moved to Europe in 46 - his accent over the 20 years had developed into a very continental one. Fascinating 20 minutes of Don Carlos. Love his music!!
  7. Green with envy - have been a fan since the early 70's - BTW AFAIK they have never come to Australia Just bought the Larks' Tongues In Aspic 13CD/DVD & Blue Ray set - my favourite period with Jamie Muir check this 2016 version of "Starless" - probably the same lineup as you saw, Ed
  8. BTW, this is a wonderful set - great score for whoever landed it!!
  9. I didn't know ED was regarded/popular within the skateboarding community both of my sons (23 & 25) are both Eric Dolphy fans, the younger involved in skateboard culture & hipped me to ED skateboard decks check this set of 5 skateboard decks made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of "Out To Lunch" https://shopwesternedition.com/products/out-to-lunch-series

Yep, I had realised that my stay in NYC will not coincide with Mary's dates - real bummer missing her by such a small window. I definitely have the Stone on my itinerary - will see someone there. Going to try as many as possible jazz venues but my preference is more avant if possible.
  11. Downloaded it last night. Doug Pomeroy has done an excellent transfer job. Theme is Honeysuckle Rose played (& sung) by a variety of lineups. Standout material is the John Kirby Sextet - 10 tracks, radio broadcasts, mostly from 1940 - they sound so ahead of their time, a great rendition of Boogie Woogie Stomp by Albert Ammons (with unknown drummer) at Cafe Society (Dec 39) Also, WNEW Radio Jam session with Waller, Teagardens (Charlie & Jack), Pee Wee Russell, Condon, Shapiro & Singleton (5 tracks), Roy Eldridge & Chick Webb with radio orchestra (1938 - 2 tracks, one without Webb), Benny Carter Orchestra live Savoy Ballroom (11/39, 2 tracks), then finally closing with The Joe Sullivan Sextet (same date & location as Ammons)

    September 13 to 24
  13. I have all of the editions (1 to 9) with editions 1-2 covering LPs/cassettes, that's what the covers say but it's only the first edition that actually covers LPs. I bought each edition as it was released (cept for #3 which I only picked up recently) I'd recommend the first edition (easy to pick up second hand AFAIK) if it's only LP's you are after. Most of the LPs covered are from the 80's (ie material that was still available on LP by the early 90s) As the first edition was published in 1992, many of the jazz "classics" had already made to CD. As the editions progressed some material was deleted & new releases (plus reissues) were added so I find I use use all 9 volumes. IMHO the best jazz resources of the nineties & noughties - Cook & Morton had a sense of humour & it's reflected in their reviews.

I'll be in NYC for 10 days in September & I was really hoping to catch her but it doesn't look like she'll be playing live during that time (I even emailed her & she actually replied - seems like a genuinely nice person)
  15. What a shock!! I wasn't expecting this Saw Gregg live a couple of years back at Blues & Roots Festival (Byron Bay) & I only just saw his son, Devon this year at the same festival You'll be greatly missed R.I.P. Gregory LeNoir
  16. What about (not technically BN's?) 1. Fats Sadi (BN 10" 5061) was originally a Vogue 10" -> Japanese release? 2. Cool Britons (Aces Anonymous or Mike Nevard's Melody Maker All Stars)(BN 10" 5052) one title released on Avid CD 928 (Cleo Lane/John Dankworth). Lord Discog also mentions some of these titles were released on Atlantic LP 2 (no record of this LP in my searches) -> have the Japanese done this one?
  17. as an aside, here's some trivia - WABCM changed their name to WPLJ in early 71 as a result of the FZ MOI track WPLJ (White Port And Lemon Juice) from their Burnt Weeny Sandwich LP (a cover of the Four Deuces release from 1956)
  18. Marshall McLuhan's "Global Village" in action!!
  19. first moderator from Australia!!
  20. Sorry all but I've just accidentally deleted this topic, thinking I was just deleting one post that I had just created. Is there anyway it can be retrieved? Anyway, CD Japan has just listed the track details for this series http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/release/music/jazz-fusion/month/?page=2 looks like all the alternates Erbwol listed have been added to the respective releases Dorham Jazz Contemporary (12), Roach (13), Clark (14), Paris (21) My apologies again for the deletion - hopefully (with the help of some board members) I'll be able to sort this out

    Jimmy Bunn

Looks like they were brothers from the scanty information below https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_Bunn
  22. Just downloaded it - SQ is fine by me (heard a lot worse) - Laurie states the sound quality is not up to scratch. Recorded in Adelaide in 1981 with Cables, Williams & Burnett. Nice to have some live AP from downunder.
  23. Wow!! looks like I've been lucky - for the last 4-5 years I've bought all of the Mosaics (that I wanted) as they were released & mainly from Jazz Messengers (great service IMHO). That free shipping over 60 euros is the clincher - makes them much more affordable here in Australia. Have over 100 sets now (been picking them up since the early 90s). Nothing I really need. Quite a few of the sets turn up here for sale second hand & there doesn't appear to be a big demand for them - I've picked them up for very reasonable/good prices. My latest score (last week) was one of my holy grails ie The Basie Roulette Studio Recordings 10CD in mint condition - I never picked it up at the time (didn't have the finances). That was sitting at Birdland Records in Sydney for quite a few months (deceased estate) & they kept dropping the price with no takers - I'd forgotten about it & when I looked again last week the price had been dropped significantly so I pounced. Currently I'm negotiating a price for the Bechet, Hodes & DeFranco sets (all vinyl) with a shop here in Brisbane. Really hope Mosaic can find a wealthy benefactor or crowdfunding could be an option - they've been a large part of my life for the last quarter of a century.
