  1. What a shock!! RIP Ornette
  2. I think this has all been previously released on LG's Dragon & Sonet CDs

    Hum Dono

finally opted for the vinyl version (we'll see how it sounds with my new tube/valve amp) - pity they don't include a digital download with the purchase
  4. got a copy of this from Jazz Messengers a few days ago - SQ is very good (compared the originally released titles on official CD to this boot & sound is equivalent) Was very cheap considering its a 6CD set - in sturdy/glossy "clam box"
  5. Currently reading the Havers "Uncompromising Expression" Blue Note publication & he mentions that some of the early BN LP's go up to $5000 - but this figure is insane!! Who buys these LPs - Japanese collectors?
  6. Import Cds have the first 6 (of 25) listed $11.25 for singles & $15.26 for the double http://www.importcds.com/advancedsearch?aar=&aal=&aso=&ala=elemental+music&agn=&afrom=&ato=&afmt_cd=true&afmt_mdvd=true&afmt_lp=true&afmt_sacd=true&afmt_dd=true&afmt_other=true&mod=AM&r=1 I'll be grabbing some of these
  7. Found an excellent detailed breakdown of the session on Noal Cohen's Lucky Thompson Discography site It's already been updated with the new CD/LP releases http://www.attictoys.com/LuckyThompson/Lucky_Thompson_discography3.php (look for Nov 25, 1960) Wow!! this is a killer NDR live in studio session - ranges from trio to octet performances
  8. Looks like it's going to be a reissue of Cadillac LP 1003 (Stan Tracey Alone At Wigmore Hall) with the previously unreleased duo material added Would love Hazel to rerelease (on CD) the Ogun Tracey/Osborne duo session - Tandem: Live At The Bracknell Jazz Festival 1976
  9. cheers The other thread on this site gives Rega turntables a good rap - maybe I should just go for the RP78
  10. I've had the CD on my wants list since reading "The Dark Tree"
  11. AFAIK some of the Daagnim vinyl is still available - bought 2 LP's ("Stars/Air/Stripes" & "Witness" with Prince Lasha) from Dennis a couple of years ago BTW as has already been mentioned, he's a lovely person to deal with I buy the majority of his output directly from him - he also makes CDr's of his early OOP vinyl
  12. thanks for the advice - been doing some searches for the two recommended models (Lenco GL75 or Technics 1210 MKIV) - both are very appealing but trying to track down either in Australia may be a bit of a problem - both a far & few between here I'll keep searching for the time being
  13. Amazon France has the Jimmy Lyons set for 16.47 euros & The Chico Hamilton one for 17.70 euros (once VAT removed) plus shipping (13 euros for both to Australia) - other sets not as cheap as these Interestingly, the most recent batch appears to be more expensive than previous releases
  14. any comments on the 2 Carla Bley releases I'll probably get the live European Tour 77 disc - nice lineup there (tentet including Michael Mantler, Roswell Rudd, Elton Dean, Gary Windo, Hugh Hopper, Andrew Cyrille)
  15. I picked up the SHM CD and compared it to my RVG. The RVG CD was squashed like a pancake from compression and the stereo image is narrowed and quickly generates listener fatigue. Additionally, Aphex Aural Exciter artifacts suggest that Rudy used the device to manipulate and goose up the sonics and results in an artificial splashing of the cymbal across the stereo image in a bizarre phasing effect. The RVG of Morgan's The Gigolo is truly one of Rudy's most awful remasters. In contrast, the SHM CD has a wider sound stage, greater dynamic freedom and more natural cymbal presentation. many thanks - I've added the SHM version to my latest HMV Japan order Aphex Aural Exciter artifacts - what an alliteration - sounds like something from Dr Who (thought you were taking the piss initially but this is real!!)
  16. If you were coming to Brisbane you could have stayed at our place for nix - we have 2 spare bedrooms (children away studying in different cities) Unfortunately Brisbane is approximately 1000kms north of Sydney Those prices don't make sense (that price in October!! did it coincide with a public holiday weekend?) - peak season or even shoulder season doesn't start till November (late I think) & is at its peak in December & January - coincides with the School Holidays (usually commence early to mid December) October is a lovely time of the year here (Spring) - not too hot - just right - perfect motorcycle riding weather Don't come to Australia in January/February - it's unbearably hot (& getting worse - records being broken yearly & bush fires worsening)
  17. Has Morgan's "The Gigolo" SHM been discussed on this thread anyone compared it to the previous RVG (US) & McMaster editions - as far as I can recall the RVG sounded horrible with the McMaster version sounding slightly superior (not sure re the TOCJ versions)
  18. just ordered a copy in my latest Jazz Messengers haul
  19. I've just noticed that the Hawk Mosaic only contains half of the session. Low Flame/ Allen's Alley are missing. The former is all Hawkins and a very fine performance. I'm aware is not a "complete" set but it's omission is somewhat odd given the small number of tunes from that session. This session always appears to be fragmented on LP & CD releases, one of the reasons being the absence of Coleman on Allen's Alley (Wee), often regarded as the Allen Eager Sextet for this title Low Flame & Allen's Alley were both rereleased on the "Esquire All-American Hot Jazz Sessions" RCA CD Nevertheless, I'm surprised all 4 titles were not included in the Mosaic box (it's an important session)
  20. what a wonderful article - great read!! I presume that soundtrack to a movie (French-Algerian War) he recorded for Blue Note has never been released
  21. arrived today with a hand written note by Bertrand (Gastaut) - haven't listened yet
  22. Thinking of upgrading my turntable & am interested in having 78rpm capability my choices are 1. Sole 78 turntable eg Rega Planar 78 -> costs about $700 in Australia or 2. Multipurpose (45, 33 & 78) table -> been looking at the Thorens TD 240 mk2 (need to change the cartridge/needle when playing 78's) I don't really have space for 2 turntables so option #2 is my preference Any advice would be appreciated esp re other multipurpose turntables Duals have been mentioned but these don't appear to be available in Australia at present (have had 2 in the past)

    Uptown

Uptown - keep rolling them out!! - these look great - seems that their release rate is significantly increasing Dig JR's hair! - No Country for Old Men or ? & The Mysterians
  24. Tracks 1-9 are from the original LP (Hey There!) while 11-19 are from Babe's Blues Only track 10 (Billy Boy) appears to be previously unissued All tracks are from one session (Aug 13, 1961) - two titles remain unissued ("In A Mellow Tone" & "Here We Come")
