  1. just got the Mosaic email advertising this upcoming set - nice!! Commodore & more
  2. Flurin This is a fantastic set - highly recommended Don't hold on for too long - it's a limited edition set (3000 copies) - I'm surprised it hasn't sold out yet Import CD's currently have this for $24.95 - great price
  3. Looks like Shorter's Odyssey of Iska has sold out on the HMV Japan site but is still available through CD Japan http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Wayne-Shorter_000000000011634/item_Odyssey-Of-Iska_5596332 Haven't done a more thorough search to see what else may be OOP
  4. I'm onto this one - big LT fan here
  5. Yes, they sound stellar. Much improved. from post #34 and many thanks
  6. Has anyone done a comparison of the two SHM Joe Henderson "State Of The Tenor 1 & 2" to older releases I know these are not part of the "Classic Blue Notes" series but I think this reissue has been mentioned here considering upgrading my mid 90's doubletime release - this sounded quite good IMHO (for the time) but are the SHM's that much better? - It's a pity they didn't add more unreleased titles from these live sessions (there are plenty) BTW I've been buying the earlier Classic SHM BN's from HMV Japan - they have them at a reduced prices, as low as 1200 yen at times (with their frequent special offers) AFAIK all of the titles since the first series are still available at HMV Japan
  7. bumped wow, it's 4 years since I originally posted this Still looking for the first 2 Giuffre discs (I have CDr's but would like the original discs) This box doesn't turn up much, let alone individual discs (not like the 12CD Classic Capitol sessions - lots of split sets on the market) Thanks
  8. thanks James have bookmarked the CD - any unreleased/rereleased Wardell is eagerly anticipated, especially a 64 bar solo
  9. He plays piano (no organ at all) on Nathan Davis' "Happy Girl" (SABA/MPS) - recorded in Germany Jan 65 Woody Shaw plays on two titles (quintet), the remainder are quartet with LY on piano - I suspect this will be the lineup for the Nathan Davis Quartet material referred to He also plays piano on two early Woody Shaw Muse titles (Dec 65) "Cassandrite" & "Obsequious" - these were originally recorded for Blue Note but not released by the label
  10. I wonder if that was a direct quote from Zieff as it's italicised (was it misheard or did Zieff actually say that) - reading further down (4 lines to be exact) Chambers repeats the description, this time spelt correctly (bona-fide bopsters) Maybe it's not a typo?
  11. I'd have to agree with the Harriott - have read it twice (1st & revised second editions) Also dug the recent Twardzik (Bouncin' With Bartok) & Nichols (A Jazzist's Life) tomes Currently reading Marcus Cornelius' Warne Marsh novel (Out Of Nowhere)
  12. Tegu jis ilsisi ramybeje Clark, your music will live on
  13. Wow!! - includes Woody Shaw & Nathan Davis (plus some ND Quartet material) looks like this is going to be one of my releases of the year will definitely wait for the CD release

    ICP Box set

recently got in touch with the ICP Orchestra's manager (Susanna von Canon) thanks to you Clifford - she is looking into getting the replacement disc (Herbie Nichols - disc #30, ICP 26 I think or is it 25?) after I lucked out with Challenge Records (no reply from them after 2 emails) Her comment on the duplication of discs #19 & 20 (same side A of cassette 17) was that it was a "dadaistic" joke on behalf of Misha Mengelberg (I think the original cassette was also two side A's) I also agree that the quality was not up to scratch but I'm still very keen on the box - wouldn't part with it (had no vinyl or previous CDs of any of this material)
  15. eg Rolf Harris, Paul Gadd (aka Gary Glitter) both have been getting mucho coverage here in Astralia, esp our Antipodean ambassador, Rolf (even though he was born in the UK)
  16. What a find - I'd say much better than a geocaching "moment" - I was into this a few years back when the children were younger & still at home - great form of exercise & getting away from the house (especially the children's electronic/digital toxins)
  17. as usual your input/recommendations are greatly appreciated - what accolades!! I didn't realise that Mary was on the Braxton Iridium set (she even contributes to the liner notes) & live in Moscow (both of which I have) - will have a listen But, I would like to hear her in a leader context - will pick up some of her discs recommended here with my next Import CDs order

    Steve Lacy

    cheers
  19. Any recommendations on Mary Halvorson's output - where should I start? Have there been other threads on her?
  20. looks like ESP will be re-releasing "Sonny's Time Now" later this year (May?) just read the news on the AA site - the release is being directly licenced from Sunny - hopefully that's good news for him http://www.ayler.co.uk/html/what_s_new.html
  21. Thanks for the feedback Looks like some (or all) of the Universal pressings have a faulty disc 6
  22. Oddly disc 6 of the Farlow is the only disc of any Mosaic that wouldn't rip for me. I tried two MacBooks and two disc drives and ended up ripping the Elite instead. I've never noticed the distortion. same here, I couldn't rip the disc also (on top of the 30 secs of distortion at the start of track 1)
  23. Since the others have already been recommended...I'll jump in and recommend the Mulligan. It's fantastic! And the mastering, by Malcolm Addey, is superb. Caveat Emptor!! I purchased the Farlow Universal/Mosaic a few years back -> the first track of Disc 6 "Lean On Me" has distortion/clicking for the first 30secs I was not able to do an exchange through Mosaic as I did not purchase it from them - I didn't bother returning it as I sourced it quite cheaply here in Brisbane (from a record shop) Alternatively I had the Verve Elite version so still had a good copy of "Lean On Me" I'm wondering how many other sets were affected similarly - anyone with a Universal set have a listen? (what about the standard Mosaic)
  24. Agreed. That was the CD I used to have years ago. It was so muddy if I recall. This CD sounds incredible as I expected based on the great Flight for Four reissue. I called it my reissue of the year even before it was released!! (I have so much faith in International Phonograph discs & Jonathan)
  25. ? The Grados are 32 ohm headphones, as are my PSB Speakers M4U1's. My iPod Touch (4th Gen) powers them just fine (not to the same level as my Headroom Micro Amp, nor should it…). Makes me wonder if he doesn't have a separate issue going on. An amp should always provide improvements, but the cheapest Walmart special MP3 player should have no problem driving 32 ohm headphones. Let alone an iPod. I'd hate to see him spend hundreds of dollars on a new portable player only to find he's experiencing the same problems with his cans. thanks for the info I need to qualify what I mentioned above - my Grados do run on the iPod unassisted but the SQ isn't that good (much better if you use a preamp - sorry to be misleading) I use a Griffin Powerwave or a Nuforce DAC to get better sound I presume the Fiio's will lead to better SQ (than iPod) without the use of a preamp/DAC
