Wow!! didn't know it was that scarce on CD - bought my copy new from CD Japan in 2010 (was it that long ago??) for about $12 aussie

Some discussion on Dolphy newsgroup re upcoming Resonance release - see extract below - very excited about this indeed!! Zev Feldman came to Japan last year, so he commented on Dolphy's materials in "JaZZ JAPAN"(vol. 92) magazine interview by journalist, Kiyoshi Kojima.( http://blog.livedoor.jp/dolphyandme/archives/25279751.html) New release will be from "Douglas session", it is being prepared as beginning of 2019. Zev has 8 hours tape(mono-ver. not master tape) from James Newton, originally Dolphy had taken to Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Sorry for my poor English. Atsushi Yamaguchi, Japan.

Tickets went up for the Brisbane concert (May 5) last night - they're FREE!!! but very limited numbers/space (scored two)

Totally blown away!!!! just seen that Brotz is doing an Australian tour & playing here in Brisbane on May 5 (Institute of Modern Art) Misterioso, How did you manage to buy the tickets? I've looked on a couple of sites here in Australia & there do not appear to be any tickets on sale as of yet.

Wow!! new Monk - was browsing my local music store (hardly ever do this anymore) - yes we do still have them in Australia (lot more vinyl than CDs these days) & found this gem - thought they were alternate versions on initial glance but once home soon realised these bonus tracks are live. Must have missed this original thread. Any new Thelonious material is always precious to me. Have the original material on a variety of releases.

I bit the bullet & bought a Japanese Bomba/Strata East version in 2010 (after I started this thread) - this version sounds fine (it's a 24bit remaster) though I havn't heard the Bellaphon version.

Davis, George - Scapula: Bop Acetates, Chicago, 1949 SKU CvsD CD014 "Saxophonist George Davis is an enigmatic figure in postwar jazz. He’s best known for leading the band in which Jackie & Roy met – young singer Jackie Cain encountered pianist Roy Krall in the mid-1940s, playing together under Davis in a club on the south side of Chicago called Jump Town. They cut two 78-rpm records for Aristocrat as the George Davis Quartet; these sides followed Davis into obscurity. In 1948/49, Jackie & Roy went on to work with Charlie Ventura. At the same time, Davis cut a very unusual set of acetates with an unidentified band (bass, drums, piano, trumpet, guitar, Davis on alto and tenor sax), playing some standards and a selection of compositions identified as original but which turn out to have been pilfered from the Fats Navarro songbook. The unique 78-rpm records, which were rediscovered in a record shop in Chicago a few years ago, had not been previously issued. Awkwardly announced by Davis, who pretends that there is an audience though it is clear that they’re being waxed in solitude, these privately recorded bop and r&b tracks are pure Chicago jazz, hot, swinging, and bristling with attitude. John wasn't that forthcoming with details - it's a bit sketchy now - maybe it was estate related - I met so many interesting people (jazz wise) in Chicago & NYC things are a bit of a blur Anyway, he still has copies - I suppose if you go in there & buy a few CDs he may give you one

On my recent trip to the states (September) I dropped in to Dusty Grove & Corbett vs Dempsey (located next to & above DG). I met John Corbett & also grabbed a stash of recent releases including Hats (Billy Bang, Jimmy Lyons, Phillip Wilson, Lacy/Potts - Tips) plus the unreleased Hat session Nuclear Family (McPhee & Jaume) & Wadada Leo Smith, Brotz/Van Hove/Bennink 1971. The bonus item (actually on my wants list) was the wonderful/quirky George Davis "Scapula" - Bop acetates, Chicago 1949 - John gave me a copy as due to contractual issues it had to be withdrawn (not listed on website anymore) & can't be sold. He mentioned the upcoming Willisau & Ra releases but didn't have hard copy at the time. Will order through Dusty Groove.

Good news for Australia - it's been available via Netflix Australia since late July

The Spanish (or Andorrans) will eventually (or probably) do a CD box set of these LPs plus other sessions from the KABC Stars of Jazz series that didn't make it to Calliope. Fresh Sounds et al have previously released some of these sessions (non Calliope releases) on CD.

what a bummer!! - I'm going to be in Chicago (from Australia) from 24-27th Sept - missed out by three weeks Chuck, can you recommend anything jazz wise (I'm partial to avant/free/improv) over that time period (not a big time frame) in Chicago Will be checking out the Green Mill Is it worth going to The Velvet Lounge?

I'll be in NYC from Sept 13th to 24th & aim to do a number of the jazz venues So far I've found (been very lucky IMHO - some great stuff & I've struck gold with Mary Halvorson - really wanted to see her) & will be booking in the next day or so Barry Harris - Village Vanguard (19th-24th) - Wow!! - one of the masters Jane Ira Bloom plus - The Stone (15th) Mary Halvorson / Sylvie Courvoisier - The Owl (Brooklyn)(21st) Tomas Fujiwara Double trio (includes Mary Halvorson) - The Jazz Gallery (22nd) Lee Konitz & Dan Tepfer appear to be playing on Sept 15 (only one night) at the Jazz Gallery but I can't seem to be able to link to the tickets - maybe it's sold out? I've sent the JG an email Coltrane Revisited (Eric Alexander, Jaleel Shaw, Steve Kuhn, Lonnie Plaxico, Steve Smith) - Birdland (19th-23rd) Would have loved to see McCoy Tyner at the Blue Note but he's only playing on the 11th (one day only & two days before we get there) bummer!! I'm also going to drop in at the National Jazz Museum (Harlem) to have a peek/listen maybe at/to the Savory Collection Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Perfect timing!! will be able to get this with my yearly Emanem order - also a new Paul Rutherford release "In Backward Times, 1979-2007". I'm surprised I didn't get an Emanem email of upcoming releases - maybe it's yet to come
