what a wonderfully fulfilled life - one of my faves - will miss you Gerald His recent Mack Avenue releases were just as good as his PJ material

These sets are mightily expensive especially if you live outside the states but I did go for the NYA4 set & have no regrets - it's a beautiful piece of work musically & aesthetically - highly recommended!!! Though I'm very into Cecil Taylor, I'm reticent to get this one as it's only part of a week long residency at the Village Vanguard - I'm hoping this will eventually be released in its entirety on CD (as in the Codanza 10CD set)
-
nice overall - that Trovesi set looks very interesting the later Chico Hamiltons are also appealing - one is a tribute to Eric Dolphy (My Panamanian Friend) The Blackwell has overlap - two from the Haden set (Old & New Dreams) & one from the David Murray second box (Morning Song) Hopefully Amazon France offers a special multiple deal like they did with the last batch

John Coltrane - Live at Temple University 1966-official release!
romualdo replied to king ubu's topic in New Releases
Here's a few questions answered - I've been communicating with Wolf Schmaler (one of the contributors to the Coltrane Reference) over the past year or so regarding all things Coltrane Have you heard the newly released Temple University 2CD set - Interestingly its been released by Resonance Records - I was expecting Hip-O-Select IMHO, sound quality is excellent It’s actually a Verve release, I think, Resonance is a separate company licened by Verve. Don’t know why they organized the release like this. As far as I know all announcements (and the highly interesting discussion after the concert) have been edited out because of Verve and WRTI-FM contracts. Ashley Kahn's notes throw up some interesting points 1. He claims that Garrison was not present (only one bassist) - though there are 2 photos in the booklet of a concert performance (details not given) & both bassists are present Maybe these are from a different location? After long discussions of the question “one or two bassists” in the group the result is: “one bassist only, Sonny Johnson”. Kenyatta – in an interview with Fuji – remembered “Sonny Johnson for sure, Jimmy Garrison possibly”, but aural evidence (Chris DeVito, a former bassist himself) and other sources clearly say there is no reason to assume Garrison was present. The photos: I can’t see two bassists on the second photo. Both photos (middle pages and the second) most probably are from a performance Village Vanguard, December 26, 1966. 2. Confirms Rashied Ali's presence Yes, that seems to be confirmed. -
I bought that as a double LP when it was first released in 1990 highly recommended!!

"Sonny Stitt", "Inter-Action" & "Mr Bojangles" are still available through HMV Japan, currently at a reduced price (906 Yen) http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/search/advanced_1/category_1%2C2%2C3%2C4%2C5%2C7%2C9%2C10%2C23%2C24%2C50/formattype_1/keyword_sonny+stitt/sort_datedesc/target_SEARCH/

It's a compilation. It's consists of selections from Burnin' (Argo, 1958, w/ Barry Harris), Sonny Stitt & Bennie Green - My Main Man (Argo, 1964), and Sonny Stitt & Zoot Sims - Inter-action (Cadet, 1965). The sucky think is that there is room left on the CD - they could probably have included at least one complete album. Because they've been issued with the same cover, "Burnin'" is often confused with Argo 629, "Sonny Stitt," which had no liner notes or listing of personnel, only the same photo of Stitt on both front and back. The rhythm section on Argo 629 has often been said to be the same as on "Burnin,'" (Barry Harris, Frank Gant, and William Austin) but in fact Stitt is backed there by the Ramsey Lewis Trio. The quite distinctive work of bassist El Dee Young is the giveaway; also, Lewis sounds nothing like Barry Harris. Finally, unexpected though this may be, Argo 629 is the superior album IMO, one of the best Stitt ever made. Larry, thanks for the musician info re Argo 629 (is it Eldee or El Dee Young?) - you wouldn't have a more accurate date than 57-58?

The Lady Who Shot Lee Morgan
romualdo replied to bebopbob's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
its published by KHA Books & you can buy if from their website http://www.black-e-books.com/books/313-lady-who-shot-lee-morgan.html -
I hope Ran is up for a Cam Jazz box set in the near future (next batch maybe?)
-
I've done the same - earlier this year I removed all of the inner sleeves from the Ogun discs I have & replaced them with the "cellophane" type I normally use - I found they were scratching & staining the discs Get the Blue Notes box set - it's superb - before it goes OOP. It'll end up going the way of the Harry Miller set - impossible to find second hand cause everyone who owns a copy would be very reluctant to part with it.

Dusty Groove are listing the Tapscott for an October release (Import CDs don't have it on their database yet) http://www.dustygroove.com/item/717032

According to the Albert Ayler site, the alternate Spirits is not part of it. http://www.ayler.co.uk/html/what_s_new.html: "Speaking of which, ESP do have one 'unreleased' track, courtesy of Martin Davidson. It's the alternate 'Spirits' which did appear on some early editions of Spiritual Unity. There's more information about it on the Spiritual Unity page, but apparently ESP didn't have a copy of the fifth track until recently, when Martin Davidson (of the Emanem label) sent them one, and ESP told him that their next issue of Spiritual Unity will contain all five tracks from the session...." Now available as preorder from Amazon; release date August 26: Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk famous. Ayler's sound was unprecedented, much rawer than any other jazz of the time. The 50th Anniversary Expanded Edition includes as a bonus the track ""Vibrations,"" which was briefly and accidentally substituted for ""Spirits"" on an early vinyl edition. It is the first time both ""Spirits"" and ""Vibrations"" have been on an edition of Spiritual Unity. finally!!! Dusty Groove also have it listed but not Import CDs or even the ESP site

romualdo replied to romualdo's topic in New Releases
totally agree - I much prefer the card sleeves to plastic jewel cases also terrific sleeve designs & essays -
I thought the Gheim CD is a straight reissue of the previous CD release - that's great if there is more material I'd actually been looking for a second hand copy of the earlier OOP CD
