  1. Allen - would you know the name of the abovementioned trumpeter (was it Ernest Coycault?) - I'm currently listening to this CD (picked it up out of historical interest & I'm glad I did) - his band was "thrown" out of Australia in 1928 - interesting liner notes I also highly recommend the recent DE release "The Washingtonians, 24-28" -> SQ vastly improved on previous issues (that I have) - looking forward to the new Ellington The McKinney's Cotton Pickers (3CD) was also part of my most recent order - another great set (JRT Davies mastering)
  2. RIP George will have another listen to "Mental Cruelty" for you
  3. Joy Spring is actually Daahoud (they've made a mistake) hopefully this will sound better than the RLR version - doubt if this version came from the original VOA tapes (probably a radio broadcast or an audience tape)
  4. I have those on the Blue Notes/Frank Wright disc. Plays but is totally un-rip-able on any computer drive. Might be time for Ogun to re-consider their packaging. I replace those crappy plastic sleeves (which I blame because they easily tear and dust or whatever gets in an casues those lines which are scratches) with paper sleeves now, but it's too late on that one. This is really too bad! I love Ogun but I hate stuff like this! Guess the regular jewel case ain't too bad an idea, after all. I use the cellophane inner sleeves (buy from Sound Source in the US who get them from Japan) - thin & very protective
  5. Which of these was the original/earlier cover? have seen both of these listed as 6023
  6. another sad ending - living out of a van in his final years (like Sly) His memory will live on for me - was only listening to "Absolutely Free" yesterday RIP RAY - "Memories of El Monte"
  7. loved her name - it was so distinctive RIP Jayne
  8. Oh No! RIP Fontella
  9. Havn't heard of the Wayne Shorter "Without A Net" Blue Note - priced at three times that of the other BN releases - is it a compilation?
  10. A long rewarding life & a great musical ambassador "East meets West"
  11. OMG - just saw the thread/news what a long & great life - to think he originally wanted to be a Veterinarian he transcended jazz with "take 5" - how many people not versed in jazz know that tune
  12. Just ordered a copy from Dusk Fire
  13. Of the total of 13 titles on this double LP, 11 definitely have made it to CD One definitely has not plus the second is dubious 1. Honeysuckle Rose (10:00) 2. not sure about Shuffle Boil (5:26)(supposedly from Jan 30, 1964, according to Lord) - the early 2000's CD version of It's Monk's Time contained an "unreleased" take #5 of Shuffle Boil running at 4:52 -> could this actually be the same title (timing out a bit though) Someone needs to listen to both versions (I don't have the LP) & report back As 'Always Know' has been available on CD on a French release, I guess that means that all 13 have been available on CD. I am looking at my copy of the double CD as I write this. EDIT: On a cursory listen, the 'Shuffle Boil' on 'Always Know' sounds different to both versions on 'Monk's Time' Well wadda u know - never knew it had been released on CD (~1994, France) Thanks for that info Steve Just did a quick check -> going for £80+ on UK Amazon, $38+ on US Amazon, absent on Amazon France or Ebay at those prices it would be better to pick up the LP & digitalise it yourself for just the one or two tracks
  14. I've been ordering regularly from Cadence since the late 90's - have always done it (even the specials) via email - send them a list of what I want; they have my cc details & address & presto!

  16. I've been eyeing that one since it's release but havn't nabbed it yet Thanks for starting this thread Colin - great idea regarding the Lithuanian No Business label - I buy directly from them -> send an email order then pay with Paypal after a confirmation recently picked up the Howard Riley solo box from them -> wonderful material the label is planning to release next year the "Melodic Art-Tet" (Charles Brackeen & Ahmed Abdullah) (70's) Also directly buying from the Polish Not-Two label (carries Multikulti & Kilogram labels too) - picking up most of the Vandermark & Evan Parker releases (I think I may be getting the Resonance Box set as a Christmas present - my partner received a box/package from poland yesterday - she couldn't remember what is was, opened it in front of me & very quickly closed it. In those short few seconds I spied the Resonance Box!!!)
  17. I only have the Chet Baker release - I remember buying it directly from the Dutch Jazz Archive & not through a linked dealer as appears to be the case now - I emailed the Archive & ordered the CD using Paypal on their advice. I'm quite sure that when the Baker CD was released you could only buy it from this site.
  18. Cadence currently have a 50% sale on all new books for all you Sun Ra fans out there time to get the essential omnibus "The Earthly Recordings of ..." at half price - normally $61 here's the link http://tinyurl.com/bv4c5ff
  19. The album is listed as being produced by Max Roach. interesting connection - wonder who has the tapes now - Larue?
  20. The three faulty "mono" discs were Ming, New Life & Hope Scope Does anyone know whether these are now "fixed" and if I order a set through amazon it will be OK? One can only assume since it's been a long while since the error was discovered and corrected. If you want to be sure that all the "bad" ones were recalled from internet retailers like Amazon, I might suggest sending an email to Cam Jazz and asking them that very question. Try this email simone@camscores.com I have dealt with Simone over the past few years regarding these boxed sets - he's been very helpful Had my faulty Murray box replaced
  21. Label timings are: Lover Man 6:32 Daahoud 10:23 What's New 19:14 I'll Remember April 3:54 However, the album label and jacket both mislabel "What's New" as "I'll Remember April", and vice-versa. It should also be noted that these tunes came to Elektra Musician/Bruce Lundvall thorugh Max Roach, who, iirc, claimed ownership of them. many thanks - looks like they are the same What about 52nd street theme (listed in the Lord discog) - is that on the LP?

    Vocalion

Has anyone had any experience of using the HMV website for ordering CDs? The last time I ordered anything from them, which was some time ago, I gave up after a couple of weeks and cancelled. I wouldn't be recommending them if I didn't think they were any good! There was a blip in customer service about a year ago when they migrated from Guernsey to Birmingham in the wake of the tax loophole being closed, but they are back to normal now. recently ordered the Harriott Vocalion double through them (was only £9 but shipping was £4.50) - took quite a while (it was OOS) but did come through in the end one thing that did annoy me was related to VAT - their list prices include VAT which was not removed from my order (as Amazon UK does when shipping to Australia) - I emailed them twice about this but never received a reply
