  1. A new batch of these twofers is slated for release at the end of this month 15 more are already listed on the Grooves-Inc site Some mouth watering stuff here (I think very little has had previous CD release, except maybe in japan) I quickly jotted these down so don't have the LP names Sonny Criss John Handy Blue Mitchell Sonny Stitt Keith Jarrett Mel Brown Howard Roberts Marion Brown Oliver Nelson/Hank Jones Charles Mingus Alice Coltrane Freddie Hubbard Clark Terry Michael White Chico Hamilton
  2. Picked up three in the last month (Stitt, Kelly & DeFranco)via Amazon & this site - all in great condition & very reasonable prices (most under $10) Don't think they were played much as the discs had virtually no scuffing There seem to be more VE's on the market these days & at lower prices (have a number of these on my Amazon Wish List & check daily) I use CD inner cellophane/plastic sleeves (like small LP inner sleeves)to protect discs that are housed in these situations (tight digipaks) - works very well - they come in packs of 50 (japanese origin but sourced from the US) Luckily I bought quite a few of these in the early 2000's when they were on sale here in Brisbane - think they were selling them for $4 (Aus) a piece
  3. CD's arrived today lovely condition!! thanks again
  4. Can anyone confirm if there are two takes each of Elysee(s) & Hilo The Lord Discography lists two for each title Elysee tks B (78 vers) & ? (LP vers) Hilo tks C (78 vers) & ? (LP vers) other discographies don't make the distinction I have the titles (1 tk each) on the Rollins Prestige 7CD box (don't have any other versions for comparison ie OJC CD "Trombone By Three" or LP's) Lord lists the LP versions on the OJC CD (the 7 CD set is not mentioned) while the 78 versions are on the Proper Intro set (2069).
  5. I tend to download the MP3 files & load them into iTunes For FLAC files (better quality) - you need a FLAC player (won't work in iTunes)
  6. Wolfgang's Vault have just released (download as MP3's or FLAC's) a number of artists from Newport June 1976 (Carnegie Hall, NYC) 1. Anthony Braxton - Composition #70 (8 parts) Dedicated to Duke Ellington - 40 mins of music (musicians - Abrams, Lewis, Altschul & Holland) 2. Ted Curson Septet - 50 mins 3. Elvin Jones Quartet 4. George Coleman Septet
  7. Looks like Set #5 is being released on September 20 can't find any individual album listings methinks this is an error - that's the same date of release as Vol. 4 A few sites have this release listed as Vol. 5!! this is getting confusing check the MTV site http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/coltrane_john/albums.jhtml?albumId=2740715 it shows Vols 4 & 5 (different covers) but both being released on Nov 1 So, is there a Vol. 5 in the wings??
  8. pm sent on Coleman Hawkins - At Newport (Verve 50th Anniversary Edition) $5 J.J. Johnson - The Brass Orchestra (Verve) $5 Cecil Taylor - Algonquin (Bridge) $8 Cecil Taylor - All the Notes (Cadence) $8
  9. What prompted my initial interest was the cover to Double or Nothin' - In small print was Liberty Lighthouse Series, Vol. 1 then recently I found an image of the cover to Drummin' the Blues & again in smaller print, Vol. 3...... Check this site - page from Billboard discussing the new deal between Rumsey & Liberty http://books.google.com.au/books?id=KiAEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA48&lpg=PA48&dq=liberty+lighthouse+series+jazz+records&source=bl&ots=OsPsD8a6yO&sig=8VKY81fbuyRJBupuOGKizldyo48&hl=en&ei=rwZNTvjcDOjhiAKH28l3&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBsQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=liberty%20lighthouse%20series%20jazz%20records&f=false Maybe the only to find out is to search relevant Liberty covers
  10. Don't you think they would have made an exception for the "colonies"
  11. In the late 50's (and beyond?) Howard Rumsey & Liberty were involved in releasing a series of LP's I know of 2 Vol. 1 - Lighthouse All Stars - Double Or Nothin' (recently released as Japanese TOCJ CD) Vol. 3 - Lighthouse All Stars - Drummin' The Blues (On Lonehill Jazz CD Jazz Structures) Anyone know how many were released in this series
  12. wow - thanks for the link : I've never seen any footage of that show with FZ, only stills
  13. what a coincidence - just been listening to "A Loose Kite .... " today & would you believe it or not the 40th anniversary "Wake of Poseidon" last week (slowly upgrading my KC vinyl - the 40th anniversary efforts are amazing, especially the DVD's) I have never understood the mixed & generally poor ratings attributed to these jazzier Crimso efforts (Lizard, Islands, Poseidon) - they contain a stellar cast of British Jazz musicians. Critics claim Islands has no cohesion but I totally disagree - it flows beautifully for me!
  14. If this topic has already been covered elsewhere, maybe someone could merge this Wolfgang's Vault recently released (VOA recording?) the TM Lincoln Center Newport concert as a download (FLAC or MP3) I have the RLR (Spanish) double CD containing the concert but there appear to be marked (on some titles) timing differences between the two the WV timings generally are longer than the RLR CD - is the extra material just applause etc? Anyone have both of these & compared. I'm wondering what the source material for the RLR CD is (radio broadcast?)
  15. that's great - with the VAT removed & free shipping to Australia it'll cost $22-23 Aus
  16. romualdo

    Prez is here!

totally agree - that footage is magic - as far as I can recall there is no audio for that section (havn't watched it for a while)
  17. My treasure trove of CD's (17) reached Australian shores yesterday All in beautiful condition A pleasure dealing with you Eric
  18. Just looked at my CD & it has 16 titles - 10 of these from Cabin In The Sky & does contain In My Old Virginia Home (3:42) - They're all there
  19. I agree with Jeffcrom - all of those he has mentioned are recommended The Evidence CD label has a lot of his Saturn recordings(rereleased in the early-mid 90's). The other label worth mentioning is Art Yard (UK based - I think Chris Cutler is behind this - a spin off from Recommended Records). They have been releasing more of the Saturns since the late 2000's - great packaging & remastering. A recent double CD from ArtYard/Kindred Spirits is a Paris 1971 concert (THE PARIS TAPES - legitimately recorded)released last year for the first time - the music & sound quality are pretty darn good (actually spectacular). The other label of interest is Transparency - lots of unreleased material surfacing for the first time - they (Michael) did the mammoth 28 CD 1981 Detroit set - for the real diehard Ra fan. Sun Ra's music is so varied (even within a set decade) it's hard to pinpoint a few releases
  20. Bertrand you're right on that my mistake!!
  21. Chuck that's what I thought when I looked at the CD track listings (before buying) & compared it to my discography (Lord) It appears that two tracks have been merged into one -> when I loaded the disc into iTunes & did a track search, one of the tracks had two titles Can't remember which ones - I'm at work at present
  22. I get the impression that these are Euro only releases but I may be wrong Have picked up the Fuller (was very interested in this one), Ayler (at last his final album)& Scott so far
  23. I always associate Steve Allen with Frank Zappa - that was my first exposure, being a big FZ fan (way before my real exposure to jazz) He was on Allen's show in the late 50's (59?)playing a bicycle wheel
