  1. What Nat Adderley tune is 'Twice Around' inspired by? Thanks, Bertrand.
  2. I second David's recommendation. Catch him while you can. Bertrand.
  3. I guessed it as soon as I saw that it was a four-letter word. Bertrand.
  4. I will not comment for fear of being labeled a 'drama queen'. Bertrand.
  5. Maybe they're just jacking off more. Bertrand.
  6. I'm somehow reminded of the Woody Allen joke about how small the portions are in addition to the food being bad at a Catskill's resort: not only does this record suck, but it's incredibly short. Bertrand.
  7. I bought three from Oldies for $7 each recently, and they had quite a few other titles in stock. Not sure what the deal is. Listened to side 2 of Sleep Dirt today. 'The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution' is one of Zappa's greatest performances. No one ever seems to mention it. Who else is on this record anyway? Bertrand.
  8. I have Thelonious Himself in the 20-bit series, and was thinking of buying the extra tracks that were included in the Keepnews collection CD on iTunes. Are the following statements correct: 1) The tracks 'April In Paris', 'Ghost Of A Chance (take 7)', 'Functional', 'I'm Getting Sentimental', 'I Should Care (take 3)', 'Round Midnight', 'All Alone' and 'Monk's Mood' appear on both versions. 2) 'Functional (take 1)' is the same take that appears on Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane 3) 'Ghost Of A Chance (take 5)', 'I Should Care (take 1)' and 'I Should Care (take 2)' are new takes that appear for the first time on the Keepnews CD, and were not even in the Riverside box. Thanks, Bertrand.
  9. You might run across Bill Heid in Shanghai! I can try to find out the name of the hotel where he plays, if you'd like. Bertrand.

I think they were lip-synching. Bertrand.
  11. One of my favorite Blue Note album covers, although I don't have this record (yet). Does anyone know where in NYC this photo was taken? Looks pretty generic, of course. Bertrand.
  12. So 'on demand' is a CD-R? In that case, I'd prefer buying it on iTunes and making my own CD. Thanks, Bertrand.
  13. I stumbled across two organ CDs on iTunes that looked intriguing: 1) Flavio Boltro/Pietro Tonolo/Emmanuel Bex/Joe Chambers: The Translators 2) Vito Di Modugno: Organ Trio Plays Modern Jazz Standards The first has Joe Chambers, who rarely recorded with organ (plus a Herbie Nichols tune), and the second has a great track listing (I'm not familiar with the guy, but the sound clips were nice). My preference is to buy physical CDs, but I could live with iTunes. Can either of these be bought as CDs? I hunted online but no luck. My mother checked in Paris (Bex is French) but no luck either. Thanks, Bertrand.
  14. I am going to work on the assumption that they are on the up-and-up until proven otherwise. Forget Jazz artists for a minute - there is tons of rock on this site. Are these bands all unaware of its existence? I find that hard to believe. Some shows are available for sale, others for streaming only. There must be a reason for that. Bertrand.
  15. There's been some question as to how much the estate/rights holders are involved. If the Hubbard is delayed due to that, then that would seem to indicate that they are doing the right thing and clearing it first. But I'm very naive about these things; there's probably a lot more to the story. Bertrand.
  16. Thank you, gentlemen. I listened to Star Bright last night. Great record, and now of course I need to pull out the other two again, and track down Soundin' Off. How is that one? I also realized I am missing only two Blue Note Mobley sessions (leader or sideman): the Freddie Roach and the Jimmy Smith. Both used to be available. You snooze, you lose. Bertrand.
  17. Morgan is the composer. The other thing is a Blue Note fuck-up because somebody didn't do their copyright search correctly. There is a lead sheet for 'Rigormortis' at LC by Glover, Morris and Joey Dee (not Dell), i.e. the Starlighters guy. It has nothing to do with Lee's tune which is copyrighted as 'Riggar Mortes' (or maybe just one word). The Levy thing is some lame rip-off of Chopin's 'Funeral March.' Bertrand.
  18. There were no bonus tracks on the Mosaic Select Dizzy Reece for the Star Bright and Soundin' Off sessions, correct? I have the other two as Connoisseurs (including the extra cuts) and just got Star Bright from Dusty Groove. I just need Soundin' Off which I might be able to get online for less than I thought, but I wanted to make sure there were no missing tunes, not that BN is ever going to reissue it Bertrand.
  19. Dewey Redman once told me he thought Anita Baker could be a great jazz singer. I couldn't really venture an opinion because I am not familiar with her work. But if Dewey says it, I have a tendency to think it's probably true. Dewey was music. I heard Ravi once with Joanne Brackeen and thought he reminded me of Dewey. I did not notice this as much on subsequent gigs. Bertrand.
  20. Blue Note is still in business? They will drop him after one album. Bertrand.
  21. Other than Monuments, it's all great stuff. Bertrand.
  22. Um, how exactly did you stumble across that one, Jim Bertrand.
  23. Sinatra recorded with Dagmar Krause? Bertrand.
  24. Frank Haynes? Not exactly an oft-recorded figure. I like his playing on that Grant Green record that is not really a Grant Green record. He's not related to Roy, is he? Looking forward to hearing that one. Bertrand.
