  1. I thought he died years ago. And I hardly think they are all together again, if you get my drift.
  2. I see Leeway at gigs fairly often - I'll pass the greetings along! Bertrand.
  3. For a minute there I thought it said 'knocked up'.
  4. Where is it and how much is it? Bertrand.
  5. To confirm this, check the BN discography which shows the tracks in recording ('take') order. If Burrell is present on the later takes and not the earlier ones, then that could be correct. Bertrand.
  6. He donated the 78s a few years ago to the Library of Congress. He gave a talk at ARSC. Bertrand.
  7. Herbie's new CD, with Wayne all over it, is out tomorrow. Herbie had told me there would be bonus tracks on Amazon (due to space restrictions), which I didn't quite get. Perhaps they would be available as part of the new Amazon downloads, I thought to myself. Think again. The core album has 10 tracks. The version available from Amazon has two bonus cuts, on the CD apparently. iTunes has 2 different bonus cuts, which you cannot buy separately. So to get all 14 tracks, you have to buy the physical CD from Amazon, and buy the entire CD as well from iTunes. And I am assuming there are no other bonus tracks on eMusic, Napster or other mp3 download sites. What's a Wayne collector to do?
  8. When did this interesting alto saxophonist pass away? Here are the recording I know of: Teddy Charles - Coolin' 4/14/57 (one Jenkins original) Hank Mobley - Hank 4/21/57 Jackie McLean - John Jenkins: Alto Madness 5/3/57 (2 Jenkins originals) Paul Quinichette - On The Sunny Side 5/27/57 Cliff Jordan 6/2/57 (one Jenkins original) John Jenkins/Clifford Jordan/Bobby Timmons 7/26/57 (2 Jenkins originals) John Jenkins With Kenny Burrell 8/11/57 (3 Jenkins originals) John Jenkins - Jazz Eyes 9/10/57 (3 Jenkins originals) Wilbur Ware - The Chicago Sound 10/16/57 and 11/18/57 (2 Jenkins originals) Anything else? Thanks, Bertrand.
  9. MG, Looking back at my post, I come off as mean-spirited, arrogant and sarcastic. I really apologize for that - that was not my intention at all, I was just being goofy. Normally, I would delete such a stupid post, but I'm going to leave it there as a cringe-inducing reminder to myself that I need to think twice before hitting that 'add reply' button. And, of course, you are right, Alvin may have authorized the reissue without being involved himself. I had interpreted what Patton said to me as meaning that Alvin would never authorize a CD reissue of the Nilva dates, but now I realize he probably just meant that he himself would not go to the trouble. Again, please accept my deepest apologies. Bertrand.
  10. Two clues to answer your question: 1) Read post #1 and see who is going through the tapes 2) How good are you at anagrams? John Patton told me Queen was holding off on CDs. Glad he finally changed his mind. Bertrand.
  11. David, I also hope we can see this band in DC one day. Could you give us an idea of what compositions are in the repertoire? Thanks, Bertrand.
  12. Are those extra tracks on iTunes? Too fucking tired to look right now - work is killing me.
  13. In another thread, I pointed out that I was able to find 5 titles that are otherwise unable elsewhere, at least at a normal price. $3-$4 off list for OOP CDs and no shipping (over $50) is more than a mediocre sale. I should even shut up and get more OOP titles before you guys nab 'em, but I'm trying to cut down, and the 5 I got were among the ones I had most regretted. How long this sale is going is anyone's guess. I may just call our friend Jackson and see what's up. Bertrand.
  14. The Alto Madness reissue is annoying: there is an extra track from this session ('Bird Feathers') which is only on the compilation CD of the same name. It was left off the LP due to space issues, but there was plenty of room on the CD Asia Minor is great, BTW. Let us know if any of these are not in stock. Three Trumpets was going to be in my next order. Bertrand.
  15. Iron City is a mystery session. We had a thread a while back on this. We know it is Larry Young and not John Patton on organ (the recent Savoy reissue still says Patton - don't these clowns read organissimo?). Bill Heid was adamant that it was Patton (hmmm...). He also knows that it was recorded in Pittsburgh, and the person who organized it was some rip-off dude who probably didn't pay much. This doesn't tell us a label, but it seems to exclude Verve from speculation. How many other sessions were recorded by famous players for small local labels which (unlike Iron City) never made it to the public or to the discographies? Butch Warren told me some guy in DC did a number of such sessions, including one with Butch, Buck Hill, Billy Hart and Reuben Brown (late 50s - early 60s). This is in no discography. Bertrand.
  16. Like Claude, I noticed the titles that were gone from everywhere except the Concord site. Since almost all titles were also on sale ($3 or $4 off depending), and since shipping is free after $50, I thought I'd make a try so I ordered these five titles last Saturday: This is Walt Dickerson! Don Friedman: A Day In The City Ernie Henry: Seven Standards And A Braxton Tune George Wallington: New York Scene Jenkins/Jordan/Timmons All five titles were at my door Thursday. Now I just need to listen to them! The moral of the story: it looks like Concord is liquidating the titles that are running low. They may have 3 copies, they may have 100. The site doesn't say. Since everything is on sale right now (for how long?), and since shipping over $50 is free, I plan to make one more order next month, although the five titles above were the ones I was most eager to get. Then there are some good deals at Newbury Comics (although not these five). I wonder if the discounts mean another blow-out sale is brewing... Bertrand.
  17. If all goes well, I will see him at Smalls' tonight. Bertrand.
  18. David Weiss just hipped me to this gig a few days ago. In the spirit of WTF, I decided I am going to drive up to see him. Just got a ticket today. It's at the Rubin Museum on 17th street 7-8:30, Friday 9/14. Anyone else going? Bertrand.
  19. The Library of Congress and the Smithsonian are two different things.
  20. That's not Dylag! Bertrand.
  21. Who, what, where? Is there more from this gig? Bertrand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvySgQuSoX0
  22. Thanks - I was able to back-up my iTunes files. A couple of weird things: 1) Some album titles I had changed (e.g. Mosaic boxed which I renamed to the original LP titles) were copied over with the old name. A friend told me you have to pick an option in 'preferences' to make the changes permanent, so to speak. I don't know if it's retroactive or not. I'll find out at the next back-up. 2) Some CDs I thought I had deleted from iTunes to make space were still there when I copied them over. Now there is a 160GB iPod out there! My hard drive is not nearly big enough. Assuming I can get 160GB of music copied from my CDs (I doubt my collection is even that big based on some rough calculations), will people be running iTunes from EHDs, or will we have to get big-ass hard drives? Will I even live that long to find time to download 160GB? I haven't even replaced my 40GB iPod since it broke last year. I kept waiting for a bigger model. I think 160GB is the most I'll ever need Right now, I'm having enough fun making playlists. My new car has an iPod jack, so I'm ready. Bertrand.
  23. I just bought three Mary Osborne tunes from iTunes, from a compilation called Swing To Bop Guitar. They are: 'Rose Room', 'Blues In Mary's Flat' and 'Oops My Lady'. My questions are as follows: 1) What is the recording date and personnel (and composers?) for these three tracks. The first is live, but not the other two. 2) What other Mary Osborne is there out there that I can purchase? I would like to hear more from this wonderful player. 3) Could the Grant Green composition 'Blues in Maude's Flat' be connected to 'Blues In Mary's Flat'? Thanks, Bertrand.
  24. My wife just got a 160 GB portable hard drive. The goal is to back up our PC, but especially my iTunes files. So my question is: for those of you who backed up your iTunes stuff to an external drive, is there something special to do or just copy the files like normal files? In case you need to move them from the external drive to the hard drive on the PC, is this also just a standard copy? Do I need to install iTunes on the external drive? Thanks, Bertrand.
  25. I just found out two CDs of Monk live in Paris (1964) just came out, w/ Butch Warren on board. Who put this out? Are they European boots or legit releases? It looks like RVG was involved, so could these be from T.S. Monk himself? Has this material been out before? I assume the three tracks with Butch that were on the Hyena CD Heard 'Round The World are on this? Thanks, Bertrand.
