Butch's playing has just been beautiful in the last two weeks. Wednesday, they were packed to the rafters due to that article in the Washington Post. Next Wednesday (8/8), they are celebrating his birthday (which is on 8/9 - apparently the bios are wrong). I won't be there to join them, but I encourage anyone who can to do so. Bertrand. P.S.: Brownie, I just send you a message about my trip to France.

Upon further investigation, I see that the site is run by the Moncurs themselves. I can't find the track listing, but am very intrigued by the unrecorded compositions. At the gig I saw in April 2006, his keyboard player told me he has some great new pieces. I wish they had played some that night. Bertrand.

I was stunned two days ago to get an e-mail from the man himself inviting me to a CD-release party in Newark next Sunday. Unfortunately, I won't be able to go. Anyway, I found the following while googling: http://www.celebritytradingplace.com/jazz.html Anyone know any more about this? Bertrand.

Yes, he is out and living on his own again. He looks in much better spirits than when he first came out a few months ago. He's getting around D.C. on a moped right now! He's trying to quit smoking these days. I hope he can pull it off. Bertrand.

The elusive Butch Warren has resurfaced, much to my delight. He now leads a trio with Peter Edelman (p) and Eric Allen (d) at Columbia Station on 18th street in Adams-Morgan (DC of course) on Wednesdays. I've been there the last 2 times and they are really coming together. I'll probably be there again tonight - they hit at 8:45. I hope some organissimo members can check it out - attendance has been weak (almost zero publicity). Bertrand.

For those of you who are much more knowledgeable about Sibelius than I - what do you guys think of Wayne Shorter's version(s) of 'Valse Triste'? Benny Golson also covered it as 'Tryst'. Bertrand.

Something doesn't add up - I'm pretty sure that by 1968, Herbie was already married. Didn't Ian Carr's book say that he left Miles' band in '68 and went on his honeymoon (Mexico or Brazil?) and got food poisoning? Bertrand.

What song is stuck in your head right now?

'I Want To Be Your Boyfriend' by the Rubinoos. -
Just to clarify: Most of Felix Grant's collection (donated by Felix himself) was used to start the Felix Grant Jazz Archives at UDC, which are housed in a beautiful new temperature-controlled facility. http://www.lrdudc.wrlc.org/index.html A few years ago, some items that were clearly pilfered from the Martin Luther King Library showed up at a used bookstore in the DC area. A considerable effort was made to return these items to the MLK Library. They showed no appreciation for the effort made by the bookstore's employees. Most of these LPs were added to the backlog of uncatalogued material that is stored in the basement (possibly rotting away). Some of these LPs has Felix's name written on them. IIRC, we ascertained at the time that these were duplicates that Felix donated to MLK, or maybe some titles that he donated to MLK before he decided to donate the bulk of his collection to UDC. So, to reiterate: although some titles from the Felix Grant collection were donated to MLK and are being shamefully ignored by this Library (some were even stolen, and not all of them returned) most of them are safely stored in the Archives at UDC. I have nothing but the highest praise for the Archives Curator Judith Korey and archivist Rachel Elwell. It is a beautiful facility maintained with great care and respect. Bertrand.

I wonder if they could have reissued it with the narration edited out

Testing if I can post - I couldn't yesterday. BTW, the link to this forum form the home page doesn't work. I came in through the back door. Bertrand.

You're right - I fixed it. Bertrand.

The two bonus cuts with Sonny Clark and Butch Warren are worth the price of admission alone, and really belonged in the Mosaic box. There are some weaker points in the rest of the material, but unlike the Pizarellis 'brothers' (see the latest Jazz Times Blindfold test), I love GG so it's a no-brainer. As long as you're not paying $100 from some Amazon seller, I say get it. Once this goes OOP (if it hasn't already), this session will NEVER appear again. Bertrand.

But they fucked up, and here's why. The Woody Shaw CBS material consisted of the following albums: 1) Rosewood 2) United 3) Woody III 4) For Sure 5) Steppin' Stones (live) Woody III includes one track, 'Escape Velocity', which is part of the live sessions that yielded Steppin' Stones. The now OOP Mosaic included 1-4, except for 'Escape Velocity'. Currently on CD (in print): 1) Rosewood, which has 3 tracks from For Sure. 2) Steppin' Stones, which has bonus tracks plus 'Escape Velocity', but is missing one track, 'It All Comes Back To You' (or something like that). Since it was a space issue, the logical thing would have been to issue the entire Steppin' Stones plus the bonus tracks, but leave out 'Escape Velocity', which could have been left on a potential future CD reissue of Woody III. So, here's what's left to issue: 1) United 2) Woody III (the 5 studio tracks) 3) 4 tracks from For Sure plus an extra tune that was in the Mosaic box 4) The orphan track from Steppin' Stones If I were hired as a producer with the mandate to reissue all the missing tunes on the least possible number of CDs, I would proceed as follows: 1) Release United as is + the 5 missing tracks from the For Sure sessions 2) Release Woody III as it first came out (including 'Escape Velocity') + the orphan track from Steppin' Stones If there are timing contraints, one or two of the 5 tunes from For Sure could be put on Woody III instead of United. Also, could there be more live material still in the can worth releasing? None of this will actually ever happen, because the word on the street is that Sony does not have any desire for any future Woody Shaw reissues. Bertrand.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery - and please do heed JSngry's wise advice. Bertrand. -
The website confirms option 2. I'll have to burn the bonus DVD off someone

Another thread seemed to suggest that 'I Want More' would only be on a bonus DVD which you get if you buy the box. This seems to suggest that it will be on the Gordon DVD itself. So, in a nutshell: Is the DG DVD complete, or are they leaving out a track on purpose to entice completists to buy the box? If it's option 2, I would be extremely annoyed. How about the Coltrane? Bertrand.

Paul's "Memory Almost Full" Debuts at No. 3!

So no one remembers that everything McCartney did after '68 sucks because it's not really the original McCartney, it's the guy who replaced him after the crash? I always bought into that theory just because of the sudden drastic drop in his songwriting abilities before and after '68. Bertrand. -
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!! Bertrand.

This is indeed Wayne's band+Hamilton (and Tabackin and maybe others?). What piece are they actually playing? I don't recognize it and the head is missing. It might be a Wayne piece from that period. There's also a clip of this band (same festival?) with Clark Terry guesting on 'The Three Marias'. Clark doesn't know the head, but does take a decent solo. It's too bad that when festivals plan these kind of meetings, they never think of what material to be played - just toss some superstars together on the stage and let 'em blow. Obviously, rehearsals would add to the cost, but perhaps they could have thrown in a bit extra for Wayne to write a part for Clark on the head - that might have been very interesting. Wayne played 'Over Shadow Hill Way' and 'Footprints' for the 1997 Monk Competition TV Gala. He had (IIRC) Scofield, Jim Beard, Patitucci, Carrington and Moreira PLUS a trumpet of section of Brecker, Faddis and Diego Urcola (the second-place winner). Obviously, Wayne had written an arrangement of the first piece for this configuration. If you saw the TV show and thought they didn't pull it off, I can tell you that I saw them play the piece about 12 times in rehearsals and some of the 'takes' (unrecorded, I'm sure) were just mind-blowing. I'm sure this arrangement (with three trumpets) evolved into the orchestral arrangement of this piece that Wayne does when he has the orchestra gigs. Bertrand.

Speaking of Shepp, does anyone know how to contact him? Thanks, Bertrand. PS: His website has a phone number - I'll try that first.

Charles Tolliver Big Band - "With Love" (due Jan. 16th)

Are you anywhere in France from 8/8 to 8/23? Bertrand. -
I concur with posts #33 and #34. The Hutcherson/Land quintet is one of the greatest small jazz groups ever. There's also a live date on JMY which is amazing, and some 'private shows' as well which I believe come from that site that can't be named. All great stuff. Bertrand.
