THE MUSIC OF WAYNE SHORTER w/W.Shorter Repertory Orchestra
bertrand replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
This was an amazing performance. Just got back on the overnight Greyhound from NYC, so I need to go crash for a while. I'll go into more detail later. Bertrand. -
Jazz Hot to stop publication
bertrand replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Brownie, How is Philippe Carles' health? Very sad to see Jazz Hot go. I learned so much from thie publication and Jazz Magazine when I was living in France (1980-1987) and just getting into jazz. Bertrand. -
THE MUSIC OF WAYNE SHORTER w/W.Shorter Repertory Orchestra

I will be at the Friday gig. Anyone else (other than David, of course)? Bertrand. -
In answer to Dan's question, option 2 of the three options.

I've never heard their music, but since they are willing to let me grab it for free, I might just take them up on it What is the site where this can be found? Can anyone give me an idea of which other band they might resemble? Of course, this free download thing is a clever marketing ploy in disguise. If I hear this one and like it, I'll 'have' to get all their other stuff, just like I 'had' to get every record by Jackie McLean when I first heard Destination...Out! Bertrand.

I thought he died years ago. And I hardly think they are all together again, if you get my drift.

I see Leeway at gigs fairly often - I'll pass the greetings along! Bertrand.

Where is it and how much is it? Bertrand.

To confirm this, check the BN discography which shows the tracks in recording ('take') order. If Burrell is present on the later takes and not the earlier ones, then that could be correct. Bertrand.

He donated the 78s a few years ago to the Library of Congress. He gave a talk at ARSC. Bertrand.

Herbie's new CD, with Wayne all over it, is out tomorrow. Herbie had told me there would be bonus tracks on Amazon (due to space restrictions), which I didn't quite get. Perhaps they would be available as part of the new Amazon downloads, I thought to myself. Think again. The core album has 10 tracks. The version available from Amazon has two bonus cuts, on the CD apparently. iTunes has 2 different bonus cuts, which you cannot buy separately. So to get all 14 tracks, you have to buy the physical CD from Amazon, and buy the entire CD as well from iTunes. And I am assuming there are no other bonus tracks on eMusic, Napster or other mp3 download sites. What's a Wayne collector to do?

Here are the recording I know of: Teddy Charles - Coolin' 4/14/57 (one Jenkins original) Hank Mobley - Hank 4/21/57 Jackie McLean - John Jenkins: Alto Madness 5/3/57 (2 Jenkins originals) Paul Quinichette - On The Sunny Side 5/27/57 Cliff Jordan 6/2/57 (one Jenkins original) John Jenkins/Clifford Jordan/Bobby Timmons 7/26/57 (2 Jenkins originals) John Jenkins With Kenny Burrell 8/11/57 (3 Jenkins originals) John Jenkins - Jazz Eyes 9/10/57 (3 Jenkins originals) Wilbur Ware - The Chicago Sound 10/16/57 and 11/18/57 (2 Jenkins originals) Anything else? Thanks, Bertrand.

John Patton's "Soul Connection" to be released on CD
bertrand replied to Soul Stream's topic in Artists & Recordings
MG, Looking back at my post, I come off as mean-spirited, arrogant and sarcastic. I really apologize for that - that was not my intention at all, I was just being goofy. Normally, I would delete such a stupid post, but I'm going to leave it there as a cringe-inducing reminder to myself that I need to think twice before hitting that 'add reply' button. And, of course, you are right, Alvin may have authorized the reissue without being involved himself. I had interpreted what Patton said to me as meaning that Alvin would never authorize a CD reissue of the Nilva dates, but now I realize he probably just meant that he himself would not go to the trouble. Again, please accept my deepest apologies. Bertrand. -
John Patton's "Soul Connection" to be released on CD
bertrand replied to Soul Stream's topic in Artists & Recordings
Two clues to answer your question: 1) Read post #1 and see who is going through the tapes 2) How good are you at anagrams? John Patton told me Queen was holding off on CDs. Glad he finally changed his mind. Bertrand. -
David, I also hope we can see this band in DC one day. Could you give us an idea of what compositions are in the repertoire? Thanks, Bertrand.

Are those extra tracks on iTunes? Too fucking tired to look right now - work is killing me.

In another thread, I pointed out that I was able to find 5 titles that are otherwise unable elsewhere, at least at a normal price. $3-$4 off list for OOP CDs and no shipping (over $50) is more than a mediocre sale. I should even shut up and get more OOP titles before you guys nab 'em, but I'm trying to cut down, and the 5 I got were among the ones I had most regretted. How long this sale is going is anyone's guess. I may just call our friend Jackson and see what's up. Bertrand.

The Alto Madness reissue is annoying: there is an extra track from this session ('Bird Feathers') which is only on the compilation CD of the same name. It was left off the LP due to space issues, but there was plenty of room on the CD Asia Minor is great, BTW. Let us know if any of these are not in stock. Three Trumpets was going to be in my next order. Bertrand.

Iron City is a mystery session. We had a thread a while back on this. We know it is Larry Young and not John Patton on organ (the recent Savoy reissue still says Patton - don't these clowns read organissimo?). Bill Heid was adamant that it was Patton (hmmm...). He also knows that it was recorded in Pittsburgh, and the person who organized it was some rip-off dude who probably didn't pay much. This doesn't tell us a label, but it seems to exclude Verve from speculation. How many other sessions were recorded by famous players for small local labels which (unlike Iron City) never made it to the public or to the discographies? Butch Warren told me some guy in DC did a number of such sessions, including one with Butch, Buck Hill, Billy Hart and Reuben Brown (late 50s - early 60s). This is in no discography. Bertrand.

Like Claude, I noticed the titles that were gone from everywhere except the Concord site. Since almost all titles were also on sale ($3 or $4 off depending), and since shipping is free after $50, I thought I'd make a try so I ordered these five titles last Saturday: This is Walt Dickerson! Don Friedman: A Day In The City Ernie Henry: Seven Standards And A Braxton Tune George Wallington: New York Scene Jenkins/Jordan/Timmons All five titles were at my door Thursday. Now I just need to listen to them! The moral of the story: it looks like Concord is liquidating the titles that are running low. They may have 3 copies, they may have 100. The site doesn't say. Since everything is on sale right now (for how long?), and since shipping over $50 is free, I plan to make one more order next month, although the five titles above were the ones I was most eager to get. Then there are some good deals at Newbury Comics (although not these five). I wonder if the discounts mean another blow-out sale is brewing... Bertrand.

If all goes well, I will see him at Smalls' tonight. Bertrand.

David Weiss just hipped me to this gig a few days ago. In the spirit of WTF, I decided I am going to drive up to see him. Just got a ticket today. It's at the Rubin Museum on 17th street 7-8:30, Friday 9/14. Anyone else going? Bertrand.

The Library of Congress and the Smithsonian are two different things.

That's not Dylag! Bertrand.
