  1. I thought I read in the bio that Chaloff was Jewish - my memory could be playing tricks on me. Bertrand.
  2. I would be very interested in attending. I can't commit this early, but May is a relatively light work month for me, so it sounds definitely withing the realm of the possible. I have ideas for the concert that might be just perfect because the venue is Chicago... Bertrand.
  3. You are mistaken. The pianist on That's It is Felix Krull, not Parlan. Bertrand.
  4. Not only do leading historians say it, but so does Wynton Marsalis.

    John Godfrey

I believe there was an old thread that mentioned drummer 'Sir' John Godfrey. The search function is just freezing up for me. Can anyone help? Thanks, Bertrand.
  6. Miles was never officially married to Irene, the woman generally referred to as his first wife (and the mother of Cheryl), so Frances was the first. Bertrand.
  7. As I posted elsewhere, I called them and they confirmed that they did find a secret stash. Bertrand.
  8. Who the fuck is Zawinful?
  9. McMillan did his Master's Thesis at Rutgers on Lee - I have a copy of this. The early years were covered much more in depth than the later years, partially due to his access to Lee's brother Jimmy. He was able to track down a lot of key people from Lee's past. I gave him a few tidbits from my own research which were in the thesis; I wonder how much made it to the book. I haven't spoken to him in years. Bertrand.
  10. Land and Hutcherson together were just wonderful. Add Joe Chambers in the mix, and it was Nirvana. Spiral/Medina is the only official recording of this 'trio' with Stanley Cowell plus one track on an Enja live compilation (Total Eclipse has Corea instead, not a big fan), but there is a JMY bootleg and some stuff on the site that can't be named. One of the greatest bands there ever was. Bertrand.
  11. Kevin, Could you ask Michael for more info about the Silver Newport date (or maybe I'll call him eventually)? I assume it is from the VOA collection at the Library of Congress (which also yielded the Monk/Trane). They have a bunch of the Newport stuff. The reason I asked is that I told him about some Blakey dates from that archive, but I don't know if he ever followed up. 1) Newport '59 (with Morgan and Mobley). This circulates among collectors, but it would be nice to have an official release. It's 30-35 minutes. 2) Newport '61 (which must not have been the usual festival, because of the mess in 1960 - I don't know where it was held). One track has circulated, but the sound is poor. Wayne Shorter is on board. Lee Morgan couldn't make it, so KD subbed for him. There are very few recordings of Wayne and KD - exactly none other than this one. The tape I heard had two tracks for about 20 minutes, but the listing in the database showed a third, unidentified tune. I asked about this and was told it was a mistake, so it was deleted from the listing. But a Newport set was more like 30 minutes, not 20. So something doesn't add up. The two sessions together would make for a 50 minute CD at least, and possibly as much as 60-65. If Michael were to pursue this, I would make sure to let him know that more research would be needed to look into this bonus track. I would hate to see the CD come out and later find out the track is out there. The bummer is that the tapes are now out in the boonies so it will be harder to research. I know who the first person I would talk to would be. So please let me know if this is something he might pursue. PM me if you want more details; there's a little bit more to the story that I don't want to post here. Bertrand.
  12. I never got a fixed Soothsayer, since they made no indication on the fixed copies that it was fixed - probably to liquidate the bad ones to unsuspecting non-audiophiles; pretty slimy in my view. I am willing to buy one fixed copy, but not three. I am assuming the RVG will not be fucked up, but I'll wait for board member comments. I'm happy about the Redd - I have the TOCJ, so I'm missing the bonus cuts. I thought Head On was on the Mosaic but I was wrong - now I have to get both in 2008. Bertrand.
  13. John Lennon once referred to him as 'Mel Torment'. Cracks me up every time I think of it. I totally forgot about Night Court. He was just weird on that. Bertrand.
  14. This is a particularly good title in the K2 series. I sure miss that series. Bertrand.
  15. I am not a musician - I tried but I have absolutely no rhythm. The best way to put out a complete Butch Warren discography on the web is to use the BRIAN software and put something together for Mike Fitzgerald's jazzdiscography.com site. I have contribute info here and there, but am so computer-stupid that I have not yet put together my own discography (plus there's the time factor). Mike even patiently showed me for an hour outside the Library of Congress (we were stuck under the awning in a pouring rainstorm) but I'm still not sure how to start. I also favor these discographies because they have the composer credits. I feel discographies without this feature are useless. Based on your interest in identifying Butch's compositions, I think you are thinking along the same terms. Another option is to put the data together in a format of one's choice and send it to Mike and he will get it in BRIAN. But this is more work for him. I need to learn eventually since I want to do other discographies (Moncur, Redman). The nice thing about BRIAN is that you can input a session from the discography of artist X into the discography of artist Y if they appear on the same date. Half of Butch's discography can probably be put together this way. Butch has several session he has told me about that have never been released (local stuff). And there's a few other things Bertrand.
  16. I just spent an hour poring over this thread. I am glad that everyone stepped in and that 2008 is covered. Claude posted something somewhere about sending money in occasionally but not knowing exactly how much to send. I am in the same boat - I have contributed a few times, but always wondered if it was enough. But Jim's post did make it clear that money is far from being the only issue. I can only add my heartfelt thank you to Jim for all the work he has put into this board since it started. It really takes a lot of effort and sometimes we forget how much personal time is invested by Jim and Jim alone. I have tried to glance at the other board a few times, but quickly log off in disgust. This is the best jazz (and more) discussion group on the web; the others can't hold a candle to it. Although I am hardly the chief offender, I will try to hold my tongue more in the future when it comes to criticizing other members. I will make an exception if anyone comes in aggressively dumping on someone else. The only example I can think of is DEEP's ridiculous posting on Butch Warren. DEEP was banned, which speaks volumes for Jim's common sense. People like that can only poison a discussion group. I know some of you like him, and that's fine, but he cannot be allowed to wreck the forum. I reserve the right to continue ragging on Wynton Marsalis, since he expects people to shell out their hard-earned money for his crappy CDs. If he ever becomes a member here, I will have to back off I LOVE the idea of a big concert with Organissimo, the Reptet, David Weiss, Frank Kimbrough, Michael Weiss, Jazzypaul and all other professional musicians who post here. Maybe Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock (who lurk on occasion) can join in. Bertrand.
  17. Are you a bass player who lives in Seattle? I think we met there. Your wife gave me her card and I was supposed to send you my Butch iTunes playlist, but of course I haven't done so yet because I'm so disorganized... Bertrand.
  18. Tell us more about your discography Bertrand.
  19. Since I have been seeing Butch on a regular basis in the last few months, your last post piqued my curiosity, to say the least. What leads you to believe that there may be a 5th recorded Warren composition? Here are the compositions that I know of: 1) The Backbone (from A Swingin' Affair) 2) Lost (from A Fickle Sonance) 3) Eric Walks (from Leapin' And Lopin') 4) The Way I Feel (from Vertigo) These four are recorded and copyrighted. In addition, he has told me about the following (or I have heard him play): 1) Little Chippie 2) Pink Elephants 3) America, America 4) Filibuster 5) Sharon And Angie Butch told me that when he would have a solo feature with Monk, he would play 'Little Chippie'. I have not yet found an occurrence of Butch having a solo feature during a Monk performance (as opposed to a solo during a piece). Are there any such things on any boots? If so, there is a good chance that he is playing 'Little Chippie', so it may in fact be recorded in that sense. Butch once mentioned that he heard either 'America, America' or 'Pink Elephants' on the radio, perhaps played by Cecil Payne. I have not uncovered any more info on this. 'Sharon And Angie' is a brand-new piece that Butch wrote on the spot last month at his regular Wednesday gig upon hearing that his daughter and step-daughter in Sacramento had been located. If I find out about any others in the weeks to come, I will let you know. Bertrand.
  20. I think this is some of Andrew's best work - period. Does that help
  21. It is my understanding that Lord has not incorporated most of the comments given to him from one version to the next. However, he seems to be much more diligent with the subscription service, so that may be the way to go. Regardless, most discography sites (including Lord) fail to include the composers, and I feel this is a major omission. When several pieces use the same title, how do you know which is on the record? Two examples: 1) Butch Warren's 'Lost' is not the same tracks as Wayne Shorter's piece. Wallace Roney recorded Wayne's piece, but also recorded another piece called 'Lost' (either he wrote it or Jacky Terrasson, I'll look it up later). 2) Butch Warren's 'The Way I Feel' is not the same piece as John Patton's, nor is it the same as the track with unknown composer that Red Mitchell and Harold Land recorded! So I think composer credits are needed for a discography to be complete. The discographies produced through Brian (e.g. those on Mike Fitzgerald's site) have composers, and this has been a precious resource for me. Bertrand.
  22. Brownie, Did you attend Tyler's gig at the American Church in Paris in 1985 or 1986, by any chance? It was wonderful. One set was Monk tunes, and the other included a great version of 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home With A Broken Leg'. Bertrand.
  23. How's the Charles Davis set? Bertrand.
  24. Seriously, there are tons of these. The first thing I remember is that's what Miles did with 'When Lights Are Low', but originally there was a different bridge. Now everyone plays it like Miles. Bertrand.
