  1. That Jim Nabors set turned out to be a dud - who'd have thunk it?
  2. I investigated the Concord thing a while ago (i.e. I called). 1) They consolidated warehouses (remember that other thread) and found extra copies of some discontinued titles (it looks like almost all of them?). How many they have of each is anybody's guess. I was going to send a wish list to see who close to disappearing some of these are, but have yet to do so. 2) I made two orders. Shipping is free over $50; all titles shipped promptly. 3) The sale on the site ($3 or $4 off) was supposed to end 10/1, but is still ongoing. If you want some of these OOP titles, now is the time to take the plunge. For some of the ones I got, the only other option was amazon market place at $50 a pop. Bertrand.
  3. Will do. What venues are the most likely to host a Redd gig? Bertrand.
  4. This would be an excellent way to put out random tracks or sessions that are too marginal to be issued as CDs, or too 'controversial'. My wish list would include (of course): 1. Rejected Wayne Shorter session 1970 2. Rejected Jackie McLean session 1968 3. Rejected KD/Grant Green session 1961 I'm sure there are more. Bertrand.
  5. A friend of mine wants to catch Joe and will be in NYC this week-end. He is wondering if by any chance Joe is playing anywhere. Thanks, Bertrand.
  6. If you google 'Blues For Donald Duck Moncur', this thread comes up It looks like drummer Donald Bailey also was nicknamed 'Duck'. Any evidence that GM3 was ever associated with either Patterson or Bailey? How about Donald Duck Dunn Maybe during Grachan's Stax days... Bertrand.
  7. Odd about the inconsistent timings. Brownie - does 'Donald Duck' take up the entire second side of the Arista vinyl? Then I would doubt it's only 7:30. Regardless of discussions on quantity vs. quality, I don't know too many jazz LPs which are only 7:30 a side So then Bluerein's 'complete' set is not really complete, is it? Very confusing. Or did Archie do two different sets at Montreux? 'Donald Duck' is the Moncur composition, sorry I wasn't clearer about that. GM3 has yet to record it. There's some inside joke about this piece that I am not inside enough to get - at the Iridium gig last year, someone requested it and Grachan asked from the stage 'Who is that? Mickey Bass?' I wonder if the tune has anything to do with Don Patterson. I think he was sometimes nicknamed Donald Duck. Bertrand.
  8. Any hope of a reissue of Weather Report's 8:30, with all the tracks? It can fit onto one CD... Bertrand.
  9. According to an article in Jazzman earlier this year, Freddie Redd was slated to move from LA to Pittsburgh. Someone hooked him up with a house and everything. Anyone here live in or near Pittsburgh who might have heard of him playing? What are the main venues? The only thing I got on google was that Feddie has lived there in the past. It's close enough to DC that if I have a solid date, I might consider a road trip. He's one guy I would like to catch - couldn't make the NYC gig in February. Bertrand.
  10. You totally got my post wrong - I'm questioning the timings on the bootleg that Jim posted. The options are: 1) They are wrong on the boot 2) One of the tunes on the boot is truncated 3) The album is in fact only 28 minutes long My triple question marks refer to the fact that I seriously doubt the info on the boot from a discographical standpoint. I'm hoping that someone with the da music CD will in fact confirm my hunch that 'Blues For Doanld Duck' is actually 17+ minutes. Bottom line - I mostly want to hear the Moncur composition that is otherwise unrecorded, even by its composer. This is for my research on Moncur's compositions, not for an Archie Shepp discography. If the only way to hear this piece is to buy the CD no matter how short it might be, then so be it. But I am hoping to get the track some other way. For example, volume One is on iTunes, so Two may appear one day. Life's too short to hope to hear every Shepp recording. Bertrand.
  11. Based on the cheaper alternative, Volume Two clocks in at under 30 minutes???
  12. Kinda pricey - I really want the Moncur tune only. Looks like I can't access their download site because I'm not in Germany. At least I know it's out there - I'll keep an eye out. Thanks, Bertrand.
  13. Are these on CD? They are Arista/Freedom and the 2 Andrew Hills are on CD so there's hope. If so, where can I get them? Volume Two has an otherwise unrecorded Grachan Moncur III composition. Thanks, Bertrand.
  14. At the gig I saw at the Iridium in April, Freddie specifically told the audience that 'Red Clay' was based on 'Sunny'. Bertrand.
  15. Of course, I'm buying it the minute it comes out. I just wish I could redirect the money elsewhere than ECM.
  16. At least Bennie can see this reissued in his lifetime. Dewey told me all the excuses they had and how they said they would never reissue it. That's just nasty. Charles Eubanks was there when we talked about it as well. I hope one day to further discuss this matter with him, and possibly with Mark Helias as well. Bertrand.
  17. I'm so pissed off that they waited until Dewey was dead to reissue this that I can't see straight. This record is so brilliant that it could only have helped him in his career had it been reissued in his lifetime. Dewey asked them to reissue it several times, and they always blew him off. ECM is one fucked-up label, and Eicher is a jerk. Bertrand.
  18. iTunes U.S. has two different bonus tracks - 'Harlem in Havana' and 'I Had a King'. They cannot be bought singly - you have to get the whole CD. Since the latter is my favorite Joni composition, this really frustrates me. Another annoyance is this whole crap about not being able to buy tracks on the iTunes from different countries. I put together the appendix of Wayne Shorter's compositions for the paperback edition of his bio, but I have not been able to get a hold of the tune 'Zero Gravity' which was a bonus cut on the Japanese edition of Beyond The Sound Barrier. I had to speculate about this track in the appendix - BMI credits the tune to the whole band, so I'm not sure what was up with that. Even more annoying - the track is not available on French iTunes either, so I can't ask my family to buy it for me. It's available in the U.K and other places, but I have no relatives there.
  19. The set list was: Mr. Jin Fall The All-Seeing Eye Genesis Prometheus Unbound The second set was almost the same, except for David's own composition 'The Turning Gate' (inspired by 'Joy Ryder') instead of 'Fall'. Some great solos throughout the evening by Jeremy Pelt and Kenny Rampton (trumpet), Mark Turner (tenor), Miguel Zenon (alto), Jimmy Greene (soprano), Stafford Hunter (trombone) and George Colligan (piano). David's arrangements were great and not too busy, which would really not work with Wayne. I don't like it when arrangers feel the need to add too much to the compositions. Particularly great were the two tracks from The All-Seeing-Eye, which had Grachan Moncur III and James Spaulding as featured soloists, with Joe Chambers taking over the drum chair. James and Grachan were really playing great. A highlight for me were Grachan's solos - Colligan would lay out, making it basically a three-way conversation between Grachan, Joe and Dwayne Burno ,who seemed to perfectly sense what the other two were going for. He really amazed me during those passages. A fantastic evening, and to top it off, I wound up sharing a cab with Joe and Grachan - Grachan and I were heading to the bus terminal, and Joe was heading for the Jazz Improv conference. I heard some amazing stories in that cab! How was the Roney gig? What pieces did they do? Bertrand.
  20. Joyeux Anniversaire! Bertrand.
  21. This was an amazing performance. Just got back on the overnight Greyhound from NYC, so I need to go crash for a while. I'll go into more detail later. Bertrand.
  22. Brownie, How is Philippe Carles' health? Very sad to see Jazz Hot go. I learned so much from thie publication and Jazz Magazine when I was living in France (1980-1987) and just getting into jazz. Bertrand.
  23. I will be at the Friday gig. Anyone else (other than David, of course)? Bertrand.
  24. In answer to Dan's question, option 2 of the three options.
  25. I've never heard their music, but since they are willing to let me grab it for free, I might just take them up on it What is the site where this can be found? Can anyone give me an idea of which other band they might resemble? Of course, this free download thing is a clever marketing ploy in disguise. If I hear this one and like it, I'll 'have' to get all their other stuff, just like I 'had' to get every record by Jackie McLean when I first heard Destination...Out! Bertrand.
