  1. Here's what we know so far, SS: 1) All 20-bit remasterings are disappearing. If you see any you want, your best bets are the Concord site (where they may or may not be part of the sale) and Borders', which still has some. All other stores seem to have sent them back. 2) The 'limited edition 3000 copies' titles are slowly disappearing in the sense that they will not print more, and they are trying to accelerate the disappearance by having the sale. This is not true of all titles, and I have no idea how to tell which ones will go first. For example, I would imagine the Larry Young titles do not sell all that well, yet they were not part of the clearance sale. 3) The 'normal' OJCs, for the most part, seem to be left alone, unless they are turning into RVGs in which case the original title MIGHT be going OOP. Some titles remain available as both 'normal' OJCs and RVGs. No clear pattern, as you can see. Only one absolute: if there's a 20-bit you want, get it fast. Bertrand.
  2. I'll stay away this week-end! As I posted above, the discount gets really good if you combine it with your personal shopping day. Since they don't seem to mind using several coupons at a time (you have to do separate transactions, but who cares), you can really bring the price down quite a bit. Now if it could only be combined with a donation to organissimo... Bertrand.
  3. Man, I am REALLY looking forward to tonight! Bertrand.
  4. I have the NYC CD and I think it's fabulous. Great versions of 'No Room For Squares' and 'Blues In A Jiff'. I wish Dr. Lonnie could have recorded with Jackie Mac and Hank Mobley back in the day. I got the Prestige one through the Concord Sale (if you can't find it, it's listed under rock). I only listened briefly. I thought it was a bit more perfunctory, but I need to spend more time with it. Bertrand.
  5. Sorry, guys, I was just kidding Bertrand.
  6. That Onion story hits way too close to home. Bertrand.
  7. Thanks for the titles, Rooster. The only tune I was able to identify on my CD-R copy of this is 'Epitome'. Bertrand.
  8. Holy crap - I just can't keep up with Mike! There are so many leader sessions I may have a little bit of input on, but it will take me months to go through all this. I know he's constantly working on this stuff - as a perpetual slow poke, I envy his productivity. As an example: for the John Patton Soul Connection session, I know the composers. Also, Patton's widow told me there is a third, unissued, DIW session. Bertrand.
  9. Anyone get the CD of the Jimmy Bond session yet? Who put this out? How is the sound? Is it from vinyl or master tape? Thanks, Bertrand.
  10. 1) For Booker Ervin, I believe that session was Pony's. 2) For Ibn Ali, I think there was a session with Odean Pope lost in the Atlantic Warehouse Fire; I assume we have no song titles for that session - that's probably why Mike left it out. Please do e-mail Mike with your comments - he's very good about updating on a regular basis. Bertrand.
  11. So who else is coming? Bertrand.
  12. If I ever go to Boston again in my life (I think I was 9 last time I went), I know I will need to visit! Bertrand.
  13. I used the 30% coupon combined with my 'personal shopping day' tonight to get the following for $13.31 each, tax included: Mingus At UCLA Art Blakey Jazz Icons DVD Thelonious Monk Jazz Icons DVD I've been abusing the Borders' system for years. I already have like $15 in free points on my rewards card. Still nothing matches those 50% off one CD coupons from a few years back. Remember when Hardbop bought about 100 during that sale Bertrand.
  14. Got 32 in all. They're all open - listened to is another story Bertrand.
  15. Jim, That makes sense. As long as you were told 8, and that's what their site says, then 8 it is. I ask because sometimes, they say 8 on the site, but they tell the band 9! On a weeknight, it means the difference between taking an hour of leave or not. BTW, when do you guys hit town? I could take you to the Library of Congress if you wanted to show you all the copyrights I've been collecting, or maybe the week-end after when you play in Baltimore. In any case, I'm looking forward to meeting you guys on Thursday! Bertrand.
  16. Those evil kids are going to rot in hell for subjecting these men of God to the evils of the flesh.
  17. Jim, Can you confirm that the Twins gig on 10/5 starts at 8 rather than 9? Since the subway closes at 12:00, I may want to go home and get my car. Thanks, Bertrand.
  18. Exploration is most likely not OOP, just hard to get due to limited distribution. I liked it so much, I contacted Mark Masters to tell him about the copyright project I am doing at the Library of Congress. To make a long story short, I flew out to LA in late January for a concert Mark put together with an octet performing Lee Morgan tunes, including one unrecorded piece that I found. I also was interviewed on video about my Lee Morgan research for their oral history - their previous interviewees were people like Grachan, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Lee Konitz etc. I can't tell you how nervous I was, but I think it went OK. Mark is a fabulous arranger - check out his CDs with Jimmy Knepper, Billy Harper, Lee Konitz etc. On a sad note, Mark was supposed to record Dewey Redman in a big band setting this week-end. Oliver Lake has agreed to step in, so this will be a tribute to Dewey. Mark said the rehearsals went great - I'll keep you guys posted when it comes out. I don't know if there was a whole other CD with Grachan, but I think there are a few out-takes. I'll ask Mark later. Thanks to Rooster for first hipping us to Exploration - he made it all happen! Bertrand.
  19. I am planning to be there. For the guys in the band: when you call Twins, they are always vague about the starting time. Sometimes they tell me 8, but they told the band 9! Since it's a worknight, I need to know whether I should go home and get my car, or just use the subway. Were you planning to hit around 8 or 9? Let's make sure all of us forum members find each other - it's a small place. Thanks, Bertrand.
  20. Is the Mingus at UCLA out this week? Bertrand.
  21. Hmmm... 'The Orphan' does not really sound like a jam to me. Could they be confusing it with 'Brown Street' - this one already shows Wayne as joint composer? Thanks. Bertrand.
  22. I'm thinking of getting this with the 30% Borders' Coupon. I know they unearthed tracks that were not on the Riverside Box (plus they included 'Monk's Mood'). Are there any tracks they missed? I know that more may surface in the future, I just want to make sure that everything known as to this day is included. How's the sound? Is the booklet worthwhile? Thanks, Bertrand.
  23. 'The Orphan' is a track from Weather Report's 8:30 album. Up until now, Joe Zawinul was always credited as sole composer: on the LP, the CD, the Japanese CD and the BMI registration. Now the new WR box lists Wayne Shorter as co-composer. Does anyone know why? Did anyone get the box - perhaps it is explained in the booklet? Thanks, Bertrand.
  24. Wait a minute... Why are they now claiming that 'The Orphan' is by Zawinul AND Shorter. All previous issues have it by Zawinul alone, as does BMI. I helped put together an inventory of Wayne's compositions which will be published soon, and I need to know right away if a correction is needed. Any ideas? Bertrand.
  25. The OJC CD called Conception listed under all three of these gentlemen's names includes a track entitled 'So What' and credited to Gerry Mulligan, according to AMG. This tune is completely different from the Miles composition of the same name, I assume? Did Mulligan record it elsewhere? Thanks, Bertrand.
