  5. Hmmm... October 18 is a Saturday ... Hmmm. Bertrand.
  6. There was definitely a video in the "Vanguard" series (4 videos in all, including one of Freddie Hubbard' group) - now OOP, alas. I think the personnel was the same, so I always assumed it was from the same session. What does the Woody Shaw discography say? I could be wrong. Bertrand.
  7. Speaking of the copy protection... A friend of mine in France has always been buying US pressings of BN CDS. He orders them from Tower, and says that, even with the overseas shipping charge, it's cheaper than buying them in France and paying the VAT! I don't know if he saves on shipping by buying in bulk, and I don't know if France does the same import tax thing as the U.K.... My two thoughts on the copy protection thing: With my CD burner, I can make mix CDs of BN material which I use at my occasional lectures. Several people have gone out and bought multiple BN CDs as a result of these lectures (this music sells itself) - one guy is so obsessed with Wayne, I sometimes have to cut him short when I'm busy at work and he comes over to chat. Imagine, me having to tell someone: 'I don't have time to talk about Wayne Shorter right now'! In short, Blue Note/EMI or whoever made the decision to put copy protection on the European pressings are FUCKING IDIOTS. It's the single most moronic decision in the history of the company (which includes such decisions as signing that lame-ass Kurt Elling). Bertrand.
  8. Weren't some of these performances on Video as well? Didn't get the video when I had the chance. Perhaps some of the tunes in the videos are not on the CDs... Bertrand.
  9. GFR Bertrand.
  10. Youmustbe, Are there any tapes of Tina Brooks playing in The Connection ? Bertrand.
  11. This came up on the 'old board' and the resolution was as follows: There were probably *two* pressings of the old McMaster CD. One had the correct cues, the other incorrect. When it came out again as a Collector's Choice, they were faithful to the premise of this series: it was reissued 'as is' with no corrections. Hence, the CC had the *incorrect* cues. Which was totally moronic, of course, since a version with correct cues had existed - this is what they should have used for the CC series. I found my McMaster copy used, and it has the correct cues. The cuing error stems from the fact that there is a very long pause between the bridge of 'Saturday And Sunday' and the repetition of the 'A' section (the tune has an AABA type head). Whoever made the cues between tracks did not wait until the 'A' section had been repeated to start the cue for the next track. I never heard the flawed version, but I believe the error was in both the alternates and master takes of 'Saturday And Sunday', and of course spilled over into 'Frankenstein'. Bertrand.
  12. Who is Ronnie Smith? Bertrand.
  13. I have yet to own Blue Train! If I get the RVG, I will have to make do without the CD-ROM features of The Ultimate. Can I live without 'em (especially since some people had trouble with these on their PC)? Bertrand.
  14. Soul Stream, We still have the rejected Wayne Shorter, Jackie McLean (with Tyrone Washington, Woody Shaw and Bobby Hutcherson), and Kenny Dorham (with Grant Green) sessions to look forward to hearing! Bertrand.
  15. I definitely want to read this. A friend of mine had a copy, and the lay-out looked great. I did not get to read the text, however. There is already a mistake in the article above (which was probably corrected in the book after the Lost Sessions came out). 'The Elder Speaks' is a Sam Rivers tune; he even copyrighted it. I hope Don Sickler hipped McDonald to all of the unrecorded tunes at the Library of Congress - there are a lot of them. As I mentioned elsewhere, saxophonist Paul Combs is also working on a Dameron book. Based on our discussions, I think it will be excellent. Bertrand.
  16. But what does he mean by 'The Latin release'? Bertrand.
  17. Billy kicks ass on the Monk at the Blackhawk sessions. Bertrand.
  18. Grant Green's 'Iron City' was used in an ad a couple of years ago, but I don't remember the product. Bertrand.

    Wayne Shorter

And on the topic of Wayne, I was just reading the following interesting passage in Fred Jung's Fireside Chat: 'FJ: Blue Note has just released The Classic Blue Note Recordings, a retrospective from sessions with Blakey and Morgan as well as signature material from your classics. There certainly is enough material to release a mammoth comprehensive homage. WS: That's up to them. That is up to whoever is running that. I think they are going to sneak in there and do it. FJ: Let me make some calls. WS: (Laughing) They might start getting in there and doing it after the Latin release of the last album (Moto Grosso Feio). ' Several things to discuss here: 1) Does Wayne really not know that Michael Cuscuna produces Blue Note reissues? I think he is being facetious. 2) Why would Wayne consider someone putting together a box set of his BN recordings as 'sneaking in'? 3) What is he alluding to with 'the Latin release of the last album'? Does he really mean Moto Grosso Feio, or is this an (incorrect) editorial comment by Jung? Moto Grosso is neither the last Wayne BN recording (it's the rejected session from 10/70) nor the last issued BN recording (Odyssey Of Iska is later, despite what the Moto Grosso Feio CD says). The 'non-BN' issue of Moto Grosso from a few years ago was on One Way, hardly a Latin label. Where am I going with this? I think Wayne is actually alluding to the October 1970 session, which we know that he does not want released. That's his call, of course, despite what he says to Fred Jung. When he talks about the Latin issue of the last album, I bet he is humorously alluding to a potential underground semi-legit release of this mystery session, and that he knows things like this have happened in the past in 'Latin' countries (is he alluding to Fresh Sound?). Unless the last session is already out somewhere, and no one has alerted me to this yet... Discuss. Bertrand.
  20. Wayne Shorter turns 70 today. What an amazing career he has had. Think of all the different artists he has worked with (from Blakey and Miles to Joni Mitchell) and of the consistent brilliance and originality of most of his recorded output. I think only Miles comes close, and, honestly, I find Miles more inconsistent. And, at 70, Wayne is still going strong. He put out two great records in the last two years, and continues his off-and-on tour with his current quartet which has been together for over two years. Happy birthday, Wayne! Bertrand.
  21. Berigan, You and your family are in my thoughts in these difficult times. Bertrand.
  22. Matt Groening is apparently Mosaic's best customer (or something like that). Bertrand.
  23. Vincent, Thanks for posting this! I will try to go somehow. Bertrand.
  24. I got mine at www.daedalusbooks.com (I went there in person since they are in the DC suburbs), but they are out of most of them. Bertrand.
  25. I have yet to see a 20-bit version of Monk volume 2. Bertrand.
