  1. She's on Cats Vs. Chicks produced by Leonard Feather, the champion of women jazz artists of that period. Without him, none of them would have recorded at all.
  2. Where and when is the Harold Land from?
  3. Even though he pissed me off, I am still glad I hooked Zev Feldman up with the Left Bank cats.
  4. Does Norma Carson fit in? I have been chatting with her daughter who just popped up on Facebook.
  5. As Fawn Hall would say, sometimes you have to go above the written law.
  6. Man, would LOVE to see that. The recording is soooo good.
  7. The Smalls issue is very tricky. I saw him berate a famous musician for not wanting to play there although he was willing to play a larger venue. And I did witness a Melissa Aldana gig where no one in the front row, just a couple of feet away, was masked and they were laughing and giggling. She seemed very nervous. I stopped watching. Spike himself always walks around without a mask and has been taken to task. All of this can be seen on the videos, of course. Anonymous complaints are always sleazy, but it seems there were not so anonymous complaints also...
  8. The Wes and Bill Evans craze are a Resonance thing.
  9. I scrolled through the film a bit. I see the quartet scene. The Ornette music is some Prime Time stuff, and some large group with strings. At some point, the quartet performance and the strings are heard together. Freddie is co-author on the songs. Ornette wrote one song with lyrics. All very, very weird. It would be nice to isolate the actual Ornette tracks, they were obviously recorded in a studio separately. But yada, yada, yada, no commercial potential. I wonder if the quartet piece is live. Possibly not.
  10. I am wondering if it the same guy in all cases.
  11. Clearly. Conversely, they overestimated my naivete.

    Ornette

Is this listed in any Ornette discography: (143) Box Office (1981) dir. Josef Bogdonavich full movie - YouTube
  13. Here is the movie! Definitely Ornette Music with lots of strings, and Freddie in a quartet with Philly Joe, Al McKibbon and Teddy Edwards. Who can grab the audio? (143) Box Office (1981) dir. Josef Bogdonavich full movie - YouTube
  14. There are many private recordings of Freddie from the DC/Baltimore years, some with Butch Warren, including a fabulous House Party (check YouTube for video). Wish all this could be out there for all to enjoy in memory of my late friend, but of course things are not that easy.
  15. Yes, I think so. That would be supplementary audio to the LP I was thinking of. Is that out there to watch? Looking back, I see that I wrote ' Sounds like a great 2-CD set if anyone cares'. 'If anyone cares' was my way of staving off the usual barrage of 'it will never sell' type of comments from the usual suspects. Epic fail.
  16. You have me stumped, but I know nothing about Flea. Not James Taylor, I assume. Freddie plays organ on Carolina On My Mind. On the topic of Josef Bogdanovich, I can't believe I did not give more details at the time. Freddie mentioned him in connection with Herbie Nichols. This conversation took place at An Die Musik, so probably in 2012/2013. Freddie said that he helped Bogdanovich book a jazz series in the 50s. One of the artists was Herbie Nichols and, get this, Freddie remembered the concert being FILMED. Now Freddie was not a person who was into specifics, but if he mentioned something this from 50-60 years before, there is a good chance there is some truth to it. Even new audio of Nichols would be a find, and live! So let's get to the bottom of this. How do we proceed?
  17. Who said I wouldn't pay for it if I knew who had them? I already paid to digitize a Lee Morgan tape that no one will ever put out. Yes, I will just wait for the Fresh Sound CD in 2028.
  18. Who is Walter Urban? I was always curious about all these people who took Freddie under their wings over the years. He was a very personable guy and quite the charmer. Check out the Piano Jazz episode.
  19. 1) At least digitize the damn tapes. 2) How do you know 'no one' would buy it?
  20. You're right, let's just let the tapes disintegrate because they have no commercial potential.
  21. They played more than 40 minutes, right? It would be nice to track down the full concert and the two TV appearances the group did. Sounds like a great 2-CD set if anyone cares. Who runs the McPartland estate?
  22. Thanks! How can one contact Wayne about the extra material for discographical purposes? Update: the Supplementary material is on the website, i.e. you can listen to clips. So still not clear if the book has a CD in it also, or if the clips are the only way to get the music. Maybe I can write to the publisher, unless Wayne is willing to answer. There are three tracks with Mary, two I think unissued. And some rarities with Chick Corea!
  23. Thanks! I am curious about the supplementary material. Is this is an audio CD that goes with the book? And are the tracks from the Now's The Time record or something else? Assuming the label does not exist as such, who kept the Masters?
  24. Ari Ambrose on tenor on this one, no Gary Thomas.
  25. Does she talk about: 1) Mary Osborne? 2) Duke Pearson, with whom her husband was long associated.
