Gene Perla's personal collection of recordings.
bertrand replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That has to be 1971, not 1970. I assume these cannot be downloaded. -
I just got the Japanese reissue of Archie Shepp's On This Night, but it does not have the bonus tracks. Bummer. I see they are in the 'Archie Shepp - 5 Complete Albums' box which I had not considered getting because I had all the rest. Turns out the box is cheap. Another option is to download the whole thing at Amazon. I did see that the box has a live Version of 'Hambone'. Is this the version from The New Wave In Jazz concert? Thanks, Bertrand.

Very nice that he did this! There are a few things to add.

Freddie told me at some point he got an axe. I wish I could have gotten the story on tape. I think he got himself banned from Blue Note forever.

She's on Cats Vs. Chicks produced by Leonard Feather, the champion of women jazz artists of that period. Without him, none of them would have recorded at all.

Where and when is the Harold Land from?

Even though he pissed me off, I am still glad I hooked Zev Feldman up with the Left Bank cats.

Does Norma Carson fit in? I have been chatting with her daughter who just popped up on Facebook.

As Fawn Hall would say, sometimes you have to go above the written law.

Man, would LOVE to see that. The recording is soooo good.

The Smalls issue is very tricky. I saw him berate a famous musician for not wanting to play there although he was willing to play a larger venue. And I did witness a Melissa Aldana gig where no one in the front row, just a couple of feet away, was masked and they were laughing and giggling. She seemed very nervous. I stopped watching. Spike himself always walks around without a mask and has been taken to task. All of this can be seen on the videos, of course. Anonymous complaints are always sleazy, but it seems there were not so anonymous complaints also...

New Wes Montgomery - NDR HAMBURG STUDIO RECORDINGS
bertrand replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
The Wes and Bill Evans craze are a Resonance thing. -
I scrolled through the film a bit. I see the quartet scene. The Ornette music is some Prime Time stuff, and some large group with strings. At some point, the quartet performance and the strings are heard together. Freddie is co-author on the songs. Ornette wrote one song with lyrics. All very, very weird. It would be nice to isolate the actual Ornette tracks, they were obviously recorded in a studio separately. But yada, yada, yada, no commercial potential. I wonder if the quartet piece is live. Possibly not.

I am wondering if it the same guy in all cases.

Is this listed in any Ornette discography: (143) Box Office (1981) dir. Josef Bogdonavich full movie - YouTube

Here is the movie! Definitely Ornette Music with lots of strings, and Freddie in a quartet with Philly Joe, Al McKibbon and Teddy Edwards. Who can grab the audio? (143) Box Office (1981) dir. Josef Bogdonavich full movie - YouTube

"Ready For Freddie Redd" on Night Lights
bertrand replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
There are many private recordings of Freddie from the DC/Baltimore years, some with Butch Warren, including a fabulous House Party (check YouTube for video). Wish all this could be out there for all to enjoy in memory of my late friend, but of course things are not that easy. -
Yes, I think so. That would be supplementary audio to the LP I was thinking of. Is that out there to watch? Looking back, I see that I wrote ' Sounds like a great 2-CD set if anyone cares'. 'If anyone cares' was my way of staving off the usual barrage of 'it will never sell' type of comments from the usual suspects. Epic fail.

You have me stumped, but I know nothing about Flea. Not James Taylor, I assume. Freddie plays organ on Carolina On My Mind. On the topic of Josef Bogdanovich, I can't believe I did not give more details at the time. Freddie mentioned him in connection with Herbie Nichols. This conversation took place at An Die Musik, so probably in 2012/2013. Freddie said that he helped Bogdanovich book a jazz series in the 50s. One of the artists was Herbie Nichols and, get this, Freddie remembered the concert being FILMED. Now Freddie was not a person who was into specifics, but if he mentioned something this from 50-60 years before, there is a good chance there is some truth to it. Even new audio of Nichols would be a find, and live! So let's get to the bottom of this. How do we proceed?

Who is Walter Urban? I was always curious about all these people who took Freddie under their wings over the years. He was a very personable guy and quite the charmer. Check out the Piano Jazz episode.
